2014-2015 University of Texas - San Antonio Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
A bit concerning, a lot of y'all have got interviews fairly quickly. I transmitted 6/25 and received confirmation 6/26, still nothing from the school.

Don't worry! There are definitely many more II coming 🙂

Also: I was transmitted 6/27, confirmation on 7/2, complete 7/14 (this is when my LOR were uploaded)

For the people with the II... did they email you or is there a portal to check? Also congrats!!!!!

I am the parent of a current MS1. My child submitted and was confirmed late June last year. An II was received in late November, interview was mid December, accepted February 3. I know it is hard to see others receiving II and you are not. Be patient, there is plenty of time left in the interview season. A late II does not mean you will not receive an offer of admission.

Pretty much what TXDOCMOM said, there's still a massive amount of time left in the interview season. You can still get interview invites very late into the year. I remember getting invited to interview at A&M during a hailstorm in the middle of winter.

Also, if you're from a big ole state school like UT, A&M, or Baylor, you shouldn't worry too much about a late II because Med Schools purposefully space out applicants from the same colleges so they don't end up getting the Austinpocalypse one session and the whole population of Waco the next session.

Can somebody please tell me how to find the "Questions" section in "Interview Feedback"? I can only seem to find the graphs of survey results. Thanks!!

Click on "View Survey Results" (link below the big pie chart) then scroll down and bypass all the bar graphs and there will be a tab labelled "Questions" that you click and voila! It is sort of convoluted

How was the interview day for those that went today? Mine is coming up, and I'm curious what to expect.

Has anybody used their interview invite to obtain a reduced rate at one of the participating hotels, and if so, how much was the discount? Did anyone us Motel 6?

Any current med students around? I was wondering what research areas are open to you guys and how competitive are the classes since the school uses a letter grading system?

Just got II. OOS, 3.9, 29. Interview on 9/29!
Congrats!! When was your app transmitted? Or like when did you get the email from them?

(We have very similar stats)

It's optimal to get your interviews before Oct 15 because that means you're eligible for pre-match from the beginning. But you can still get interviews (and acceptances from those interviews) for a loooong way into the semester.

While it is optimal to have an interview prior to October 15th in order to ensure that you're in the running for pre-match November 15th, it is not completely necessary. I interviewed at the school I was accepted at on November 1st and was (luckily) given a pre-match offer just 14 days later. So I'm saying there's a chance even if you get a later interview. Don't stress, just rock your interviews and have fun.

emailed on 6/26! idk if they got my new mcat score (just got back today..) but it was a 33 so that might have helped.
either way, you got this!

II today! IS, 3.85c/3.74s with a 33 MCAT with solid EC's. Can't wait to visit!

Research opportunities are excellent, and faculty/staff/whomever are very welcoming and eager to have students come work at any level (so long as you are a hard worker). I began doing research the 2nd semester of my 1st year; I know others who did the same. Clinical or bench, it's all available. Put simply, if you are interested in something and want to do research in the field, it's almost a guarantee you can get into it.

The letter grading system is a drag, but it hasn't affected competitiveness. Everybody helps each other. My class has a google drive where helpful things are shared and then passed to the next incoming class. I really haven't met anybody who I would consider to be a 'gunner' in the sense that they would hamstring you to get ahead. They may exist, I just don't know them. It was probably the most influential aspect that brought me here. Of my interviews, the students here seemed to be the happiest. So far it hasn't disappointed. But yeah the letter grading sucks, and it persists into 3rd year.

MS4 here. I don't think the letter grading system is a negative. As the other med student put it, it doesn't affect competitiveness. It's not like the Top xx% of students make A's, the next xx% make B's, etc. The only person you compete with is yourself. I think having the letter grades helps you figure out where you stand in terms of how much you understand/need to learn. The reason I came to UTHSCSA (or I guess we're trying to change to UTSOMSA now-- just a heads up guys, it's never UTSA) was because of the culture here. Everyone helps each other, shares study resources, celebrates together; it's really a friendly atmosphere. You and your classmates are going through this difficult journey together, so there's no reason to cut someone down to get ahead. There may be a few gunners in each class, but they aren't popular, it's obvious (to students and attendings), and they are definitely the minority.

Re:research, /u/Tipsy McStagger answered it exactly how I would. There's lots of opportunities to do research if you want. I have friends who have published as second authors; I'm sure there are people in my class who have published as first. Plenty of them have presented posters. I personally didn't do research, but if you ask and look for it, the opportunity is there.

When was your application complete?
I submitted TMDSAS 5/28, transcripts arrived 6/22, but my application wasn't complete until 7/22 when my LOR from my health professions committee was finally sent in. Hope that helps!

I would have preferred it to be purely Pass/Fail, but you are correct that in the grand scheme of things it's really not a big deal.

Does anyone know if UTHSCSA interviews are open or closed file? I tried looking it up online but couldn't find anything. back in 2008 someone said it was closed but thats 8 years ago and Im wondering if things have changed...

I interviewed there this week, and all my interviewers had were my essays.

Had my interview here yesterday, so feel free to ask any questions. Everyone was very friendly, and the MSI and MSII both seemed to love the new CIRCLE curriculum. Both of my interviews were with faculty but some others had a med student interviewer. As giggglesngrins said, they only have your essays. While both interviews were conversational, they did pose a few "what would you do" scenarios. All in all, it was a great experience!

My app was transmitted on 8/4. They told me that they received my app on 8/6.

Congrats to everyone receiving interviews here!
I'll be heading there tomorrow, interview on Monday, 08/18. Is anyone else here going on Monday?
I will post back with thoughts.

My friend is an MS1 this year at UTHSCSA and transmitted mid July and did not get her interview invite until late November and interviewed in December. Stay confident!!!

Application complete 8/1/14 (OUT OF STATE). 3.65 cGPA, 3.45 sGPA, 31 MCAT (10/11/10). Do I have any chance to receive an interview invite?

Just interviewed there yesterday and they absolutely blew me away. I am hands down sold on this school... if anyone has questions regarding the interview feel free to PM me.

Does anyone know if they have a preference on what kind of stats class you take? A lot of schools accept multiple semesters of calculus, but UTHSCSA doesn't...

I took just a vanilla basic Statistics 101 course from Baylor University and pre-matched. I know people who took bio-stats and did the same. As long as you get credit for Statistics on your transcript, then I don't think it matters too much.

Thanks for the info! I was a little worried about it.
