2014-2015 Waitlist Support Group

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Hi guys,

I'm on the waitlist at three schools, none of which seem to have much movement and probably wont by the end of this cycle. I'm already thinking about the reapplication process, there's a lot of things I want to change on my application. As a re applicant, is it necessary to get your application in the day that the AMCAS opens? Basically, when should I get everything prepared by?
For your best chance of acceptance you should aim for submitting early, as long as your PS is finished 🙂

@Goforgold Get everything in asap. At the very least send your transcripts now. When i reapplied I only put about 7 schools to get the app verified and it only took a week and I submitted the first day (but in the evening). I then added 19. Most schools don't start sending secondaries till end of June, so you'll have some time to add more (if you don't hear from your waitlists). You really just want your grades verified cuz that's what takes the longest. If you're applying DO too, Id wait till you know what schools b/c they charge like $50 for the first school then $30-something for the other schools when you re-submit, while AMCAS just charges you the same per school once you pay that original first school cost. but I wouldn't wait too long some DO schools are just as competitive as MDs.

Yesterday's activity from my viewpoint was: FAU, Rush, OHSU, Tufts, VCU and Meharry.

Woah, tufts is notorious for not really having much WL movement so this is interesting.

Like everyone said already, get that in as soon as you can. When you open the 2016 amcas you will see that since you have done one before a lot of the stuff like biographic info and typing in all your courework is already entered. So you can spend these next few weeks focusing on editing your experiences/essay parts of the app. This is definitely a weird period trying to scramble to get the AMCAS done while knowing that any day you could hear back from the wait lists and not have to re-apply at all, but persevere!!! I like to think that being continually determined through stuff like this will make us better doctors. Good luck!

Thanks for all the input. I'll definitely get my transcripts sent and start working on everything else.

So pretty much we can go ahead and get verified even before June 2nd?

No, I think he means that you can submit your transcripts now so that they are already processed and received by the time you submit on June 2nd.

I'm just wondering if there is anything at all that we could do to improve our chances of getting accepted of a waitlist?
I would appreciate some adcom input 🙂

I'm no adcom, but I would assume that all you can do really is accomplish something that would normally be looked favorably upon by admissions committees and send in an update letter telling them about it.

If you are holding no acceptances there is really nothing that will improve your outcome.
The list has already been stratified, even at schools with unranked lists.
If you prefer a "lesser" or more expensive school, you may remind the office (once!) that you are more interested in the waitlist school.

Thank you for answering! 🙂
I will get ready to reapply

Question about reapplying- i just opened my 2015-2016 application. Once I opened it my 2014-2015 application closed. This doesn't mean i'm taking myself off of the waitlists at my current schools right???? Just want to make sure that i'm still holding my respective waitlist spots.

AMCAS will not remove you from waitlists.

It's not closed. I thought this at first too. You can't get into your 2015 one through the regular amcas sign-in anymore. But here: https://services.aamc.org/AMCAS2_2015/

I'm currently on 3 waitlists.. thinking of reapplying, but taking a gap year first. wondering if I should retake my MCAT, because it is unbalanced (8VR, 11 PS, 12 BS)?

Its not that unbalanced, where are you waitlisted ?

Agreed.. you're good. If it was a 12,7,12 or 11,6,13…ehhhh that gets into the sketchy area.

Hi Gyngyn, I was wondering if there has been any waitlists movement at MCW since 05/04. Thanks for your help.
Not that I can recall. I don't access the multiple accepts at home so I can't be completely sure, though.

gyngyn can you describe how it is you can see this stuff? you just look at the people on your school's wait list and notice when one of them has a new acceptance?

i find this behind-the-scenes stuff fascinating haha

Late in the cycle schools can see where all accepted and waitlisted candidates are holding acceptances. AMCAS updates these lists daily.

right, but how do you use this information to determine which wait lists are moving?

Someone holding no acceptances on Monday is seen to have one on Tuesday. Unless that school is really behind on primary acceptances, one can deduce waitlist movement.

Okay, thanks. Do you mind if I ask you the same question on Tuesday so you can check for me at the office? Again, thank you.

How has Uc riversides waitlist movement been?

Should I send a letter to my waitlist schools with some of my recent photography? 😉

😛

Yeah I think your time will be better spent improving another part of your application. If you are worried about what schools will be accepting the old mcat in the next few years here is a helpful list: https://www.aamc.org/students/download/398586/data/mcatexampolicy.pdf

Best of luck! I hope you get in this cycle either way, but if not gap years are great!

Any movement in Virginia schools? Currently on VTC's waitlist, and hoping maybe a spot will open up.
