There's a new medical school opening up in California!
It is a for-profit, and has just received preliminary accreditation.
http://medicine.cnsu.edu/

Nobody's first choice, I'm sure, but worth a shot for people who don't want to do Caribbean.

(They're also apparently taking applications for Fall 2015 through their own application portal - 2016 is through AMCAS)

Ooh interesting! Yeah how would apps work for Fall 2016 matriculation, as I also do not see it on AMCAS either?

It says on the school website that is should be done on AMCAS but, AMCAS does not have it as an option on the website or application.

I wonder if non-Californians will actually have an OK chance here...

Who is applying for the 2015 year? Just got a supplemental application from them.

Yes they're planning on recruiting a class for this upcoming year as stated on the timeline on their website.

@wzhang728 yeah I just quick looked into it, took down my question, thanks !

Anyone know the story with the AMCAS problem?

I'm applying for Fall 2015 (and 2016 if 2015 doesn't work out)!
I believe they say they don't give preference to CA residents, but we'll see haha after all one of the goals of the school is to increase physicians in that area no?

I submitted an app for Fall 2015 in the hopes that I may have a shot as opposed to going to the Caribbean (have been accepted to SGU and am supposed to start in January). Administration seems to have a lot of issues with the basics (i.e., phones). Anyone know how MCAT scores should be transmitted? They aren't listed in the MCAT Thx website and the CNSU website is pretty slim on instructions for fall 2015 admissions...

How exactly do you get the MCAT scores to them after you submit the primary? Simply mail in an MCAT score report yourself? As for the transcripts we have our registrars mail transcripts correct? Thanks in advance!

I sent an email to [email protected] asking those very same questions. Also asked about financial aid. I went ahead and had my letters of rec and transcripts sent to:

Admissions Office
California Northstate University College of Medicine
9700 West Taron Drive
Elk Grove, CA 95757

And I suspect that the MCAT scores will be sent there as well. Just want to be sure though. If I get a response to my email, I will post it...

What are everyones thoughts on this place overall? I get mixed feelings. On one hand an MD school is an MD school, but the faculty list scares me. If you check their backgrounds, almost every one is an IMG. Some are from respectable places like Japan and Israel, but I saw one woman who got her degree in Kazakstan and another who was trained in Bulgaria. The dean is from UC Davis though, which is very respectable.

In grad school (Michigan State University), I had a few IMG's and PhDs that taught basic medical sciences. A few were from places that one might not associate with great basic sciences or medical education. Having said that, I would take classes with them again. I had faculty that were trained at Harvard and one in particular who is a giant in the fields of pharmacology and neuroscience. Great researcher who couldn't teach his way out of a bag. I don't think teaching will be a major issue; I know faculty is one of the things that LCME looks at in the accreditation process so I'm sure that the school has at least met the minimal standards as far as that goes. Of bigger concern to me is what private loans will be available until the school is granted full LCME accreditation. The website is deficient in financial aid info.

So to be frank, all of us here applying are rejects that didn't get in last cycle. Now if people can answer honestly it would be interesting to see what kind of statistics we are looking at here for admissions. I'll start off.
I have a 3.2 GPA and a 30 MCAT

"Requires a minimum GPA of 2.8 and traditional MCAT score of 24 to be considered for admission. However GPA higher than 3.2 or traditional MCAT score above 28 may be considered competitive for admission to the College"

Can't speak for what the actual applicants look like, but they're expecting these stats as competitive I guess, so you certainly seem to be competitive for their standards. I know on the other thread the people who got II has lizzy scores of 65

I'm applying for 2016 matriculation and not a re-applicant, but my stats are 3.4 and 35 mcat. Not from Cali also if thats relevant.👍

Do they have a cadaver lab?
How critical is that for anatomy in medical school?

Can Canadian apply to California Northstate MD?

Got the email to submit my secondary app two hours ago.

Are we supposed to receive an email marking our application complete?? I sent in my MCAT and stuff, but want to confirm it was received.

Try contacting Kia Throw. She was able to confirm that some of my materials have been received...

Thanks for the info! I think I will wait till I know my letters have been sent before I contact them. Hopefully we hear something positive soon!

Hopefully we all will. I mean, if I am destined to attend St. Georges University, I will do what I must. Things would be a lot better if I have the option to stay stateside however. Wishing you and everyone here all the best.

Hmm wondering if I should've included (explicitly) how I would add diversity to their medical school for the supplemental question instead of just saying how it affected me.
How do people usually go about these kinds of diversity questions? For this school and for others, since it seems diversity is being stressed quite a bit by schools

Just apply DO also then.

Goro made a great thread on what to write for secondaries. This is his advice for the diversity prompt:
The “diversity” prompt for secondaries (as in "How will you add to the diversity of our class"?) is NOT about your ethnic background. It’s about what unique thing do you bring to the entering Class? Think of it this way: if I asked your three best friends “what’s the coolest thing about you?” what would they say?

anyone cares to share secondary questions?

Five questions (And I don't remember the exact wording):

1) Teamwork in healthcare and what it means to you and how you express it.
2) Diversity and what it means to you and how you express it.
3) Why do you want to be a physician and what experiences have you had in healthcare.
4) Anything else you want the admissions committee to know. (This was actually the 5th question; I don't remember the 4th question...)

All responses could be a max of 250 words / 1782 characters. You can save the responses and come back to them later.

I think there was a question asking whether your undergraduate education was interrupted or if you were like a parttime student for any period (not exact words but I think that was the gist of it).

explain any time during college enrolled <6 credit hours, I think it's 250 words

Anyone received an interview yet?
Good Luck Everyone!

Under their LORs requirements it says CNU needs an institution letter. How did people get this? I could've sworn this requirement wasn't there when I applied earlier this month...

I think you can choose to send either three letters or a pre-med committee letter and an additional letter.

"Applicants are required to submit three letters of recommendation. At least one letter is from an academic, research, or healthcare institution, and the other two letters may be originated from the following categories: science professor, non-science professor, practicing physician, academic advisor, research advisor, university student services/governance advisor, current healthcare employer supervisor, or other institution faculty. In lieu of three letters, students may provide one Pre-Med Committee Letter AND one letter from the categories mentioned. Copies of letters from those submitted to AMCAS are acceptable pending formal authentication.
Candidates are encouraged to submit two additional letters, ideally, from sources that speak to the candidate’s suitability for medicine."

Hey @Jgreg89, yup, a bunch of people have already. Look through this forum and the one called "California Northstate Gains Accreditation."

They've also posted their minimum scores for secondaries on their website, but who knows how strict they are.

News piece about CNSU earning its accreditation:

This is the perfect school for me until I read this:

"CNUCOM is not eligible for Federal Student Aid programs (e.g. Federal Pell Grant, Federal Subsidized/Unsubsidized loans, etc.). CNU is currently seeking eligibility and will advise the campus community upon any change to this status."

Once the school has achieved full LCME accreditation, the DoE will authorize federal financial aid. At the moment, the school has preliminary accreditation: http://www.lcme.org/directory.htm Maybe by 2016-17, federal financial aid will be given. Until then, its private loans and scholarships...

@graduate2be
That's not going to happen until they graduate the first class. Four years from now!! Until then private loans for the $56k tuitions + living expenses at probably 8-10% per year. Also, I guess you will need a cosinger to be approved for taking out total $280-$300k.
I worked in a bank before and dealt with this 🙁

I don't know about that; I spoke with Ms. Silvia Rodriguez Dean of Student Affairs, Admissions, and Outreach on the 27th of June and she indicated that as soon as the school obtains its full accreditation, they would be able to grant federal financial aid. Having said that, I do remember when Rocky Vista CoM started, I think that it wasn't until their first class had graduated that they could give federal financial aid. In the interim, their school did a lot to help students with institutional financial aid (scholarships, institutional grants). So, I'm planning to most def take student loans from private lenders for at least the first year (assuming that I am granted admissions) and to that end, luckily my father is willing to cosign for me. I'll also be looking under every rock imaginable for scholarships. If I have to continue with the private loans after year 1, well, I'll cross the bridge when I get to it.
