2015-2016 Florida State University Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I'm on the fence about applying - I have a very poor GPA (~3.0) but great MCAT Score, Ec's, Work Experience, Research, Shadowing. Also, I'm an IS applicant. From what I've read, FSU seems to be big on producing primary care docs for undeserved FL populations, which I've been heavily involved in already. Is it even worth applying?

I believe it's worth applying! I submitted my application on 06/02 and I wouldn't say I have the greatest academics either. I have extensive ECs and work experience on my side. IS regular admission applicant here. Good luck!

Good luck to you too. Hoping FSU shows some IS love !

Hey everyone, M1 here. This site helped me a lot so I want to give back a little.

First and foremost, I encourage everyone to apply if you are a Florida resident or have strong ties to Florida. FSUCOM looks at the whole picture. I also encourage you all to apply ASAP. I didn't get an interview the first time I applied because I did so way too late in the cycle. So if you are having doubts about applying, just do it.

Secondly, be yourself, especially on the secondary app. You will be asked a bunch of questions about your family, hobbies, etc. Don't give "ideal" answers. Be real. Do NOT put volunteering as an interest, there is a whole section for that on your app.

Thirdly, have fun with it. Do NOT get intimidated by other applicants, again, be yourself. The worst that can happen is you do not get an interview. My class is full of non-traditional students, including myself. Spend the time between when you apply until the end of the cycle looking for new opportunities to make your app stronger just in case this cycle is not the one where you get accepted, because it could as well be the second time or even the third time.

I'll probably check back every once in a while to help those with questions, because I remember having a bunch when I was applying.

Good luck everyone!

I was curious about the ED program...If I already submitted/verified AMCAS is it too late to switch to ED? Also, if admitted through ED do I have to withdraw all my other applications? Thanks!

Just verified! Submitted 06/02 9pm with transcripts received. Verified 06/12 1230pm

App submitted. IS, reg admin. Good luck everyone....Go NOLES!

Has anyone gotten a secondary

Hey guys, current M1 here, feel free to ask me any questions you have about FSUCOM 😀

Hi there, thanks for answering questions! I have a few..

1) Why does FSU have an early start date? I assume there is something beneficial about the way their curriculum is set up, perhaps to give more time to study for Step?
2) What programs can you get involved in (such as a free clinic, research opps, etc.)? I only saw something about the Marianna Rural Program on the website, maybe I'm not looking in the right place?

Thank you again! 🙂

1. The Early Start program is to give you the solid anatomical basis since anatomy is more or less isolated from the other core classes (other than doctoring and embryo). As for Step, I'm not sure since we haven't really talked about Step yet.
2. We haven't talked about extra curriculars yet since they will start up in the fall when everyone gets back. The Marianna program is a rural program for 3rd and 4th years, it is a clinical training site, specifically for people who want to be rural doctors.

Applied early decision and just got my secondary today

Just received as well. This thing is a beast. Hopeful OOS!

What does everyones "review status" page say.. basically mine only says "secondary app requested" and I was wondering if anyone else's had a notification for letters like "letters of recommendation received" ?

@johannb10 you probably know since you are complete.

I haven't gotten a secondary yet :/

Mine says Secondary Requested
Secondary Received
Evaluations/Recommendations- Committee Letter
Evaluation/Recommendations- 3
Application Under Review by Admissions Committee

Is everyone going the full 500 word limit on these secondaries? I feel like some of these questions 150-200 words is more than sufficient.

I'm wondering how to answer the question that asks to describe our siblings. My sibling is a convicted felon with numerous other problems and has been this way for a long time. I'm planning to gloss over all that with a generic statement, but I was wondering if anyone who interviewed there was specifically asked about their siblings. A Google search of my last name tells all.

To anyone on this thread seriously considering FSU COM, I'd strongly strongly strongly recommend taking anatomy the semester before you get here. I know it is not "required" but believe me, when June 5 rolls around you are going to wish you had all the background information you can. Taking anatomy the semester before REALLY helped me in the summer so far, just my 2 cents.

I don't think the transgressions of a sibling would have any impact on the decision to admit you to medical school.

I second taking anatomy. I didn't take it and I'm hating my life right now. But I'm loving this school 😀

Btw don't worry about word count. Answer the question in as many words as it takes to answer. There was one question I answered with less that a hundred words, but I said what I had to say.

Just submitted today! IS with 3.67s/3.69c/33 good volunteering/shadowing but weak research...fingers crossed as this is my #1!

Good luck everyone!

You're definitely in good shape. MCAT way above their median, and only 71% of their students have research experience anyway.

Has anyone not gotten a secondary?

I don't like that they ask the ages of siblings ... I am an older student and putting down that my brothers are in their 60's would make me seem like I'm there too (I'm not; I was an oops or a hole in the condom 😀 )

My brothers are more like distant uncles 2 times removed - don't know that I would recognize them on the street if I saw them... 🙁

Anyone know how keenly focused on rural med/primary care FSU is? I know they are very focused on it, but to the point where saying I want to specialize on the secondary would be a negative?

@Ad2b I doubt they'll really care about your siblings, I'm guessing the question is more to see how you answer it rather than what the answer is. Can't imagine someone getting denied because they have old/estranged/etc. siblings. In your case I bet a heartfelt answer would actually be pretty good and impactful

@Ad2b I'm loving your post because I am on the same boat too! My siblings are in their 50's and I'm only 22 (of course they're only half). I grew up as an only child so I focused on that and kinda just left my siblings out because to be honest I don't know them at all... haha

While I don't go to FSU COM, I do attend the school and have plenty of friends who go to FSU COM and I am friends with some of the doctors who work there. The number 1 thing they preach is honesty, and being passionate about who you are and what you want to do with your life. Yes, they do produce amazing rural family docs but if you want to specialize go ahead and say it! Don't lie and say you think rural medicine is crucial to you if you don't believe it.

Hope you get an II! The campus is gorgeous and the staff is amazingly friendly. Best of luck!

Thank you for responding! I just found out Sunday my oldest brother is gravely ill. It's weird because I don't know him but we are kin. Sucks to be the "only" and not really the "only" ... /sigh

So, I could've sworn I saw on this secondary that they wanted you to upload a picture of yourself....but either I can't find it or I'm mistaking it for another secondary I looked at. I know they've done it in the past but can anyone confirm whether this app does or does not require a picture of the applicant?
