2015-2016 Florida State University Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Thanks 😀 that summer was SUPER tough but it was so amazing. Glad to see some of you have IIs already! Impressive!

Quick question - my status shows "Evaluation(s)/Recommendations - (3)" - so that's 3 letters received, correct? I assigned 5 letters to FSU though - should I call admissions to figure out where the other 2 are?

No, it's a bug in their system. They have all your letters and get very annoyed if you call about it.

Under Application Status it says: No Status...anyone else seeing the same thing?

Do you have anything else listed below that? I have that as the first thing, dated in July, but then I have secondary requested, secondary received, recommendations completed, and app under review listed below. I think when I logged in this morning that the portal said it might be down or going through maintenance or something today. If you think there should be more listed there, maybe it'll be fixed tomorrow.

so general question: how selective is FSU in relation to IS v OOS?

For all intensive purposes they dont accept OOS. The only "OOS" people I knew (2) who got interviews were people who were Florida residents who lost residency because of military deployment.

I haven't...I spoke w/ Admissions today and inquired on a possible timeline/eta for II and got this answer verbatim from the admissions office:

"I'm going to be honest....between now annnnd April. We're expecting 7000+ secondaries....so it's going to take a while."

Popping in to say how much I admire and respect FSU for not charging a secondary fee! With 7,000+ secondaries, that's a huge chunk of cash that they turned down...but I've seriously been struggling mightily to afford this whole application process, and I jumped for joy when I saw FSU has no fee!

It only seems right to spend the money on a few nice beers and drink in their honor.

As far as I know, FSU still is not through with their early decision applicants.

^^ This doesn't surprise me. FSUCOM has had a considerable increase of applicants in the last few years, I mean this year they expect over 7000 applicants! Also, with my class it was observed that a decent amount of us were E.D. (myself excluded) so they have a lot of decisions to make

I'm on the fence about applying - I have a very poor GPA (~3.0) but great MCAT Score, Ec's, Work Experience, Research, Shadowing. Also, I'm an IS applicant. From what I've read, FSU seems to be big on producing primary care docs for undeserved FL populations, which I've been heavily involved in already. Is it even worth applying?

Yes. Definitely apply!! Be sure to accentuate your experience with underserved populations.

Hi there, thanks for answering questions! I have a few..

1) Why does FSU have an early start date? I assume there is something beneficial about the way their curriculum is set up, perhaps to give more time to study for Step?
2) What programs can you get involved in (such as a free clinic, research opps, etc.)? I only saw something about the Marianna Rural Program on the website, maybe I'm not looking in the right place?

Thank you again! 🙂

Current M2 here. There are lots of free clinics and extracurriculars for you to get involved in. We have the Chapman program which you may want to look into. Lots of opportunities to volunteer!

I would send an email to admissions or call just to be sure. Don't take any chances. They are always happy to help and are pleasant to interact with.

Does anyone know when FSU will begin to handle regular applicants? Do most schools interview all of the ED, and then begin to look at regular applicants?

Interviewed Friday. It was a great experience! I was a re-app and interviewed late this past March too. Fingers crossed!
How was it?
I'm interviewing next week also as a re-app and I'm a little nervous.

What are the general stats of the people who have got interviews so far?

Welcome members of class of 2020! You'll love it here. Hopefully I get to be a Medicine 1 TA so that I can torture.. uh I mean help you guys and gals through the nightmare that is Anatomy haha

My portal says "Application Under Review by the Office of Admissions 2015-09-03". I may be a Gator, but I have so much love for FSU-COM...really, really keeping my fingers crossed for an interview!! My little sister wants to go to FSU undergrad, so I could kill two birds with one stone and take her with me to see the school 😉

My lil sis just started there so that's my hope too!

For the secondary, did you include the letter grade? All it asked for was the course #, course name, and institution right?

If my last letter (3rd) was received by AMCAS 8/28 and my review status still says:
Secondary Application Requested 2015-07-06
Secondary Application Received 2015-07-07
Evaluation(s)/Recommendations - (2) 2015-07-09

Do you all think I should give them a call or wait a while longer?

So...should I give them a call? Everyone else has updated for my letters which were received 8/11. They have nothing on my portal about my letters yet.

If you application says "under review," it means they have your letters. My letters do not show on my portal, but when I called them that is what they told me.

Hope everyone had a great time interviewing today, and good luck. I'm sure it wasn't the slightest bit intimidating/awesome to see all of the M1's in the atrium at once in their dazzling whitecoats...😛

If it doesn't say under review I would call them. I had a similar situation and when I called I found out they had my letters, but had not processed them yet. They updated my application within an hour of getting off the phone.
