2015-2016 Florida State University Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Is it even worth it to apply if I'm OOS and don't have any real ties to Florida. Only thing I can think of is distant cousin who I've only met once and haven't seen for like 10yrs.

Stat line is 3.5 cGPA/ 3.41 sGPA/ 30

MSAR said they accept 2.5% OOS, but just wanted some confirmation or feedback regarding that.

leeeavin do you line up with their mission statement and or do you live in one of the neighboring states?

Got an interview yesterday 04/11. Anyone know if the class is full and this is for a waitlist?
I'm sure there's always a spot. If they offer an interview, it means there's a chance. What do you think the last day they will invite will be?

I could see them doing interviews for waitlist spots to cover situations when people drop their spot at the last minute.

This is SPECULATION obviously, but I think they sent the last invites already. The last actual interview is supposedly 04/25 according to previous comments in this thread...so they need to give people who were invited time to schedule if that makes sense?

Yes, I agree with you. Barring any cancellations from their current interviewees, this week was probably the last week they were giving out invites. I think you can call and ask if you are interviewing for WL or not. Congrats on the invite and GL to you!!!

The application is free. As long as you don't spend too much time on it, of course it's worth it.

So if I haven't been offered an interview invite yet, is it safe to say I'll be getting a rejection soon?

Native Floridian here. I've moved around a bit and I am looking into FSU's grad school. How hostile is the grad facility to premeds? Looking for a normal masters with a thesis, not an SMP.

Still no status. Florida Native, don't know if this is good or bad. but this is my last hope for this cycle. Praying for the best!

I'll be matriculating in May and have a question for current students.

The estimated "in-state budget" estimates cost of living around $19000-$20000 per semester (http://med.fsu.edu/index.cfm?page=financialAid.instateStudentBudgets)

However the maximum amount of stafford loans you are allowed per semester is $14891 according to financial services and the awards posted in my fsu account.

Do all students take out plus loans to make up that $4000-5000 deficit each semester? Or do most students get by without the additional loans? My apartment will cost ~$800 in rent alone each month and I'm just getting a bit worried.

Bazinga there are also graduate plus loans which give you like 5k more each semester.

I took a plus loan out summer semester just in case. You have like 180 days to return the money interest free, so If you end up not needing it you can give it back and keep those interest rates low. The school overestimates the living expenses in my opinion too.

Hey guys! Any interviewees from Friday, April 22nd, or Monday, April 25th, hear back yet? If I recall correctly, we should be hearing back today or maybe tomorrow.

Does anyone know the exact model of computer we are issued? My laptop is pretty old and I have been thinking about upgrading to a macbook or surface, but I wanted to know what they will issue first. Is the computer they give you fast with long battery life, and do we keep it?

This year they issued us Lenovo Thinkpads (Yoga 12), which can convert into a tablet so you can write on it if you like to hand write your notes. They're really nice! You won't use your personal laptop for school at all, so I wouldn't waste your money.
At the end of the four years, you have the option to buy any of the electronics FSU loans you, but by that time they'll probably be obsolete.

Hope that helps! 🙂

Late response, but I can help answer this. The Biomedical Sciences program is pretty desperate for students, so they will take anything they can get. Admissions are not competitive at all.

I did hear that the COM is opening a SMP or postbac or something, which could change the scene a bit.

Hi all,

I've been watching this thread for a while now. I'm on the waitlist currently (interviewed in early December) and was wondering if there has been any movement lately in the waitlist. Also, does anyone know if there is a date by which the formerly waitlisted/accepted students must reply by? I know April 29th was when accepted students must claim their intentions.

Thank you and good luck to everyone!

FranticDoc yeah students are assigned to either 1 or 2

Thanks, man. Is the assigning done randomly or do they take students preferences into consideration?

Also, so are the 3 weeks where we are not doing the practicum free schedule space?

FranticDoc it isn't done randomly. The preferences of the students are taken into consideration, but mostly the deciding factors are situations like weddings, pregnancies, or becoming a Medicine 1 TA which assures you a 1 spot.

Awesome! Thanks! 🙂

Long time lurker.....
Is it safe to say all waitlist acceptances have been sent out by now? First day of classes are right around the corner.

Heard from them this morning, they told me they have sent out some rejections of the Hold list but do anticipate handing out more acceptances before the start of classes. I am one on hold as well hoping to hear good things still. They said too keep an eye out for an email within the next two weeks. Sounds like they are going to fill the class up until orientation.

Gotta love the waiting game.

I'm applying this upcoming cycle but it says online that you can't apply directly to the Biomedical Sciences program and students will be considered who don't gain direct admission into FSU COM is that wrong info from what you know?

I don't know enough to answer that accurately.

So I'm still on the hold list and have heard nothing. Someone in admissions said that we would all probably receive decisions by 4:30pm EST and I have received nothing. Anyone gotten anything at all?

Im in the same boat as you (also on the hold list) havent heard anything either...

Well class starts tomorrow, so chances don't look good unfortunately.

How long on average does it take for a secondary to be received after primaries.

Probably depends on how early/late you are in the process. I think my timeline was: I submitted Primary in Mid July, received Secondary within about 2 weeks, submitted secondary within 10 days, II about 5-6 weeks later, accepted 2 weeks after that
