2015-2016 Florida State University Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Quick update: I spoke with the Dean regarding my situation. It appears that the staff miscommunicated with me that 8 hours of Organic Chemistry are required. The website is and remains correct: FSUCOM only requires 4 credit hours.

My application was given a fair consideration. Unfortunately, I will not be joining the FSUCOM Class of 2020.

While a 31 (10/11/9) MCAT may have been sufficient, a 3.07/3.07 GPA/sGPA killed any hope (as well as going off on the admission staff over the phone... lol). While a SMP/M.Sc. may be suggested, I am not getting any younger. I am already looking at finishing residency in my mid-late 30s. Even if accepted to grad school, I would probably have to move and dish out tens of thousands of dollars. So UQ-O it is.

Congrats to all the new MS1s. I hope you enjoy FSU as much as I did.

Why didn't you apply to any other programs in FL, esp the DO's - LECOM and NOVA. Your stats are competitive there and you won't have to move your family a world away.

To echo what @CyrilFiggis said, you should really consider the DO route. Stats like that should get some love from at least of couple of great DO schools throughout the country. I have a friend who had similar stats to you and got multiple DO interviews this cycle. Do yourself a favor and at least look into it before committing to an international school. Waiting one more year to matriculate to a school in the USA beats the uphill battle many IMG's face after 4 years overseas trying to come back here for residency/practice.

It also makes the prospects of away rotations VERY expensive.

On a separate note, withdrawing my application today. Growing impatient and the longer the season rolls on, the more impractical it is to move my family from CA by May.

For those that interviewed today, any advice for those still waiting to hear back? Did they mention how full the class is at the interciew?

They did not mention how full the class was at this point, but one of my interviewers mentioned that it is kind of late in the interview season so a lot of people may get waitlisted. However, they also stated that a lot of people get pulled of the waitlist in April as other students make their final decisions on where they will be attending.

My application status is: "No Status".

Does anyone know what this means?

@Saxappeal1 I assume you would know the answer to this. Are we going to find out about tuition and how to pay the week of orientation? Also, is second look a good time to look for housing, or should we do that prior?

Thanks!

Orlando3000 I do know the answers to those questions. 1. Faculty will go over finances with you 10000 times, and don't worry: as long as you do financial aid correctly (which even I was smart enough to do, and I suck with filling out those electronic forms) your tuition will be paid automatically, and when you set that up there should be a refund of your remaining loan money for remainder of the semester (summer) for as much as you took out.
2. I think second look is an amazing time to look for housing, but also don't knock the Class of 2020 FB page, there are TONS of upcoming 3rd years who are enthusiastic about subletting their places in Tally for the next 2 years, but remember to check the places out before hand. If you know a Tally native, definitely ask their advice about certain areas.

Is it pretty much a given that leases all start in September and that we'll likely have to sublet for the summer? I've been looking online for apts for a while now, and all of those have been for immediate availability only.

Hi all! I'm new to this thread!
I skimmed the thread, but just wanted to throw out there that I am a fellow OOS applicant waiting anxiously to hear back!
Does FSU send an e-mail to people who are not offered an II as well?

I applied really late, but I cannot express how refreshing I found the FSU secondary essays. I feel that that is representative of the school and would be honored to have an opportunity to lobby for myself in an Interview! (;

Congrats to those accepted! Current COM students: Did you bring any guests to second look day and do you have another computer in addition to the lenovo given out at orientation, like an iPad or a desktop at home?

6crew, just hang in there and be patient. I think there are still a few interviews going on. I will say, receiving an interview being OOS and applying late is difficult. If anything, I would try and emphasize any relationship you might have with the state of FL.

Thank you for your advice! 🙂 🙂

Do you know if they e-mail you regardless of yes/no interview?

I received my interview invitation via email. I'm not entirely sure if they do silent rejections, or if you receive an email. Maybe someone else who is a second year could chime in on that. Nonetheless, stay hopeful! There is still time, and you just never know!

I have a Dell laptop at home, but honestly, I use my Lenovo more than anything. They're super fast and super new lol

is fsu still sending out interviews?
I do not have an answer to that. However my i received the "file complete" email today (everything was submitted since September and when talking with the admissions office i was told processing took some time). Anyway, this could mean they are still reviewing applicants for available interview spots. However the more pessimist/realist side of me believes that they must first mark you as complete before they officially reject you... Oh i would've loved going here but it is what it is

I was marked as complete like, a few days after i submitted my secondary though. its been radio silence since then

Current fourth year and Tally native here. Congrats to all those accepted so far! If you want, I'll answer any questions you all have about the city, university, and COM (just nothing about the new curriculum - it's changed since my first two years).

Question for current students: I've been accepted and currently taken spring classes (MS level). I know I need to send my transcripts at the end of this semester, but am I right in assuming a mixture As/Bs is okay, or should I keep hammering on for all As?

Classes begin in 3 months and it would be nice to not burn out before it even begins.

If you could go back 4 years and give yourself advice before you began at FSUCOM, what would you tell yourself?

1) Start using Anki first year. It's the single tool that gave me more free time 2nd year than anyone else I know in my class.
2) Take part in multiple interest groups, and attend their meetings (free lunch is always a plus).
3) Develop a budget early on. Seriously, chart out ALL of your monthly expenses. Make a spreadsheet that deducts them from your financial aid disbursement figure so you can better predict what you'll be left with at the end of each term. You'll want to have extra money come 4th year, I promise. Step 2 CS/CK is expensive. Interviews are REALLY expensive.
4) Consider disability and life insurance (if you want more on this, private message me). You have value even as a medical student, and if in the very unfortunate event something happens to you, you're still on the hook for student loans. Starting early may get you better rates for when you're out and really worth something big. I'm not trying to sell anything; just think about it. You're not going to have any lessons on personal finance and insurance in the entire four years, so this is on you to learn.
5) Keep up a gym routine.

Doing well in medical school requires constant refinement of your methods, don't be afraid to experiment if you're not getting the grades you want. Stick to what works and ditch what doesn't. There's no magic way of getting through the material, you just have to chip at that mountain piece by piece. (But seriously, Anki may be the closest thing to the silver bullet I've found.)

solid. Thanks for taking the time to share your wisdom.

Hello everyone!! I am very new to this forum, or any forum to be honest.
I went on an interview and 2-3 weeks after I was placed on a waiting list. FSU is my top choice and I really really really want to get in, any advice??

I'm in the same boat. Interviewed on 01/11 and got placed on the wait list. FSU is my top choice!

How long does FSU normally give out interviews and how long are they expected to this year?
Last cycle I interviewed on Feb 20th and knew people who interviewed after me, so unless this cycle is different, they should still be sending out invites

You should send in any updates you have to your application like grades, volunteering, etc!

People attending second look, are you guys coming alone or bringing family along? Just wondering!

I interviewed in April last cycle. They told us the class was already full, but the date for acceptees to make a choice had not yet passed, so they were still working through their applications.
