2015-2016 University of California - Irvine Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I have already asked a similar question, but can any current students elaborate on the nature of the grading system (honors/pass/fail)? In particular, what is the cutoff/distinction between honors and pass and does that create a stressful environment between students? Most other medical schools I am looking at just have pass/fail. Thank you!!

Have you heard back at all? :/

has anyone tried to call the admissions office to figure out what's going on?

Not going here but I asked about this to some students the night before interview day. H/P/F is only second year and they told me that since most students are more focused on STEP that year, there aren't a lot of people gunning extra for Honors. It didn't seem like the change in grading second years changes anything about the collaborative atmosphere between students.

Just called Fran picked up. I asked about our status. And she said "the admissions comitee will be meeting to review your applications." I asked for a timeline. And she said she couldn't provide that information. Sounds like they haven't met to discuss our applications yet...

Jeez how does one get 3 weeks behind this late in the game.... They must have had trouble with something. Hopefully they'll get to us before Friday.

They are getting rid of H/P/F for our year!

I usually call in the morning and some one has always picked up, try again and good luck!
Has anyone been able to get ahold of financial aid? I've been calling the past couple of days no answer...

Oh really? Where did you get this information?
I got the same information from the admissions office, P/F for first year with internal ranking, H/P/F for second year. However, I wouldn't be too worried about it given:

1) Multiple current students have said that the UCI student body is very collaborative on the whole, and first two year grades don't really matter as long as they don't lead to students having to study unnecessary information for a few extra points on the test. Also, sometimes people like grading as a source of motivation to study if that's your style.

2) Another M4 student (on the committee for curriculum improvement) I spoke with said UCI is working to cut out less clinically relevant information from the curriculum and reduce unnecessary studying we need to do.

3)Personally , I think individuals determine the right balance of studying for themselves and how much they want to learn anyways regardless of P/F or H/P/F. Hope that helps!

Ok guys, I called in and Fran said that they are having adcom meetings for the next "couple weeks" to go over applications. She said some people should hear back this week but that most will not. Sorry for the not-so-great news :/ Good luck, everyone.

Wait so is it possible for schools to tell you your admission decision after April 30th? I thought we have to decide by April 30th?

Acceptances calls have been coming out today!

He's saying historically they typically come out on that day of the week.

I think he is also saying acceptances calls went out yesterday. There have been more people added to the FB group as well.

Waitlisted. Probably would not have attended anyways.

YOU have to narrow it down to one acceptance by April 30. They can essentially do whatever they want and accept you up until the first day of orientation (or some time around then). Since spots typically open up after April 30, I'm thinking that the majority of the acceptances that they have left to send will be sent out in May/early June. That's my theory though...

Waitlisted last night. Still my top choice. Wishing luck to everyone.
