2015-2016 University of California - San Diego Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
For those who interviewed, what time did your interview day end? Did it matter if you had morning or afternoon interviews? Trying to see if I can get on a flight at 2:45 pm... not many options, unfortunately.
If I recall correctly, I was done around 1:45 - 2PM. 2:45 might be cutting it a little close, especially since La Jolla is a good 20-30 minute drive from the airport

EDIT: And it doesn't really matter when your interviews are, everyone reconvenes afterward for lunch, followed by the tour and closing session

All right, thank you for the information!

I Initially didn't apply to UCSD because I was under the impression they focused on students with research experience. After meeting a current UCSD Student at his rotations, he told me great things about the school and that he didn't have any research experience and was still accepted. Is it too late to send a secondary (sent my primary a couple of weeks ago and just got secondary)? Thanks

If your deadline hasn't passed yet go for it! If you genuinely are interested in the school it won't hurt to send one. It's not terribly late in the cycle yet. Best of luck!

Yeah, somewhat of a crapshoot. Ironically I actually lived in San Diego for 2.5 years when I was younger, but without their secondary I didn't have the opportunity to mention that.

While USC and UCLA are my two top remaining choices (due to location -- I will relocate back to Southern California long-term as soon as I am able to), I would be happy just getting an MD acceptance somewhere.

out of curiosity, why would you prefer not to go DO?

Sounds about right. Per MSAR, 727 interviews for 124 matriculants which is about 17%. Considering shuffling and a bit of waitlist movement 15-25% sounds accurate.

On the first page of this thread, it says 1/3 are accepted outright. Based on the information I've seen LizzyM, Goro, and GynGyn write, a school will typically accept 2-3 people per matriculation. So even if the 1/3 number is incorrect and we use 2 acceptances (248) per matriculant (124), it would still be greater than 25% acceptance post-interview. In fact, it would be a 34% acceptance rate. No school can expect every acceptance to turn into a matriculant. It does seem, however, that being waitlisted at this school does not bode well for chances of acceptance.

I hope you're right. I don't think you are though. Regardless, statistics are meaningless to the individual, especially in this process. Embrace the randomness.

I signed up for a clinic tour the evening before my interview. Where do I go for this? I can not find any information in the application portal, online, or in my email inbox. I can't even remember which clinic location I signed up for yarg....

today is the deadline for UC San Diego..should i throw in some money or keep it? lol. Im from Florida, 4.0 gpa, 512 MCAT...any advice? Im interested in applying to one Cali school just in case.

Are you talking about primary or secondary? If it's your primary id say no,.. You may still have a chance at getting an II if you're submitting your secondary but it is still pretty late in the cycle IMO. The cost of the secondary is a drop in the bucket compared to tuition and if you don't have any/more than one II right now I'd say do it

primary...my cycle is going well so far in my state but I figured might as well submit my primaries to UCSD and UCLA just in case....very slim shot.

To anyone that has already interviewed here: What did you do to prepare? Thanks

It would probably take you over a month to hear back about a secondary based on others' timelines. Since your cycle is going well I would save your time and money if I were you

A storm has kicked up over here in San Diego... rain, lightning, thunder, the works.

Good luck tomorrow everyone!

edit: haha this last clap of thunder set some car alarms off

Waitlisted too! Honestly just an honor to be considered for this program and glad to have a chance moving forward!

Waitlisted. Actually a relief since (if you follow me on my MDapps) I'd like to go out of state yet my parents are really insistent on instate schools. Plus, the vibe at UCSD wasn't for me. Congratulations to those to got accepted, and best of luck to the rest of you!! 🙂

Waitlisted as well, they sent me two emails just to remind me!

Good luck to everyone else still waiting and those of us on the waitlist. Congratulations to those accepted as well.

edit: too morose.

Remember, a waitlist isn't a rejection. It's just the nature of rolling admissions. You totally still have a shot! It's not over til it's over.

And worst case scenario, you don't get to stay in San Diego but you DO get to go somewhere else and take advantage of new opportunities. I know it's hard to imagine now but there are other medical schools that will be a good fit for you and where you will ultimately succeed!

I know there's a silver lining in all of this.. it's just I watched my best friend and brother both get ultimately rejected at UCSD over these past two cycles. The waitlist barely budges ... and to me it's like a slowly drawn out rejection. I might have preferred a quicker cut I guess... but you're right! Who knows... I technically have two shots at staying in state (waitlisted at Irvine too, where I grew up).

I'm sorry you didn't get the decision you were hoping for right off the bat! I'm waiting to hear back from my alma mater, too, and I'm nervous as hell!

Fingers crossed you get to stay in Cali. 🙂

Best of luck to you too, and thanks for the kind words. Kinda means a lot strangely... even across, as Goro says, the electrons. 😛

Joining the wait list train :/ Oh well, suppose it's a 6 month wait then

Waitlisted...This was one of my top choices but oh well. Do you guys know how many students they usually accept from the WL?

My brother asked last cycle and from what I hear from some faculty associated with the school... it is a very, very limited amount. It varies year from year of course, but traditionally, not much (pretty much the case for all the CA schools more or less sadly).

Waitlisted! Bummer!

Guess I'll just mentally treat it like a rejection, maybe I'll be surprised in May, maybe I won't, but it's nice to start building a backup plan

Congrats to everyone accepted!
