2015-2016 University of California - San Diego Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I thought they said around May 15th on interview day.

They told us we would hear back about decisions starting in May, but I was referring to the "are you still interested in being on the waitlist" type of email that was sent out in mid- to late April last year.

Any updates from wait pool members? Anyone gotten in yet or called about when they will be sending out the request for updates/if we want to continue in the wait pool?

Haven't heard anything yet but I'm getting very anxious waiting to hear from them.

Does anyone know if they are receptive to additional letters of rec? i.e. from another PI?

I wouldn't send in anything until it's asked for. In the WL email it says "We receive many questions from waitlisted applicants regarding “updates” or “letters of intent” – please do not send any additional materials at this time" wait until they send an email saying they are accepting additional info. At that time they probably will be receptive though!

I went thru last year's thread and didn't see even 1 person get pulled off the wait-list after the multiple acceptance deadline. I have a feeling this thread will equally as depressing 😕. Maybe a small number of people do actually get pulled off the list, but they don't share it on SDN. Like anyone else, I'd love an acceptance here, but going to prepare to go elsewhere for now unless miracles do happen... 🙂

Dear UCSD School of Medicine applicant,

Thank you for your continued interest in our School. We wanted to provide you with an update regarding our admission process for the fall of 2016. At this time, we do not anticipate admitting additional students until the end of May, 2016 at the earliest. We will contact you again in mid-May regarding when we are ready to accept any updates to your application. Such updates are never required, but we recognize that some students like to send them.

Best regards,

Carolyn J. Kelly, MD

Why do you torture us, UCSD? 🙁

Late waitlist movement does not bode well for us :\

Maybe they're just waiting for the WL movement to die down so there's less risk when picking candidates. Additionally, they'll have a better idea what they need!

When did that happen?

He's not saying that 25 people got accepted off the waitlist this year. He's saying that UCSD reported to MSAR that they admit roughly 25 waitlistees every year.

Does anyone know if there is a class Facebook page? I feel so out of the loop with this school already

It's already mid-May, I'm guessing they've been full forever!

To be fair It's still mid-may. They said they would start accepting updates mid-may and make offers at the end of May. I personally do not think that the class is full seeing as many top schools have been pulling from their WL like Cornell, Columbia, UCSF, UCLA, etc...

Class being full makes sense, given that "Are you still interested" email haven't been sent. Have they?

There is a UCSD SOM 2020 page -- it's a closed group by invitation only. You were accepted, right? Did you get an invite from the M1 class president? He may have not been able to find you if your profile is private or if your FB name differs from your application name.

Has anyone gotten their student email address yet?
Not yet...

Am I special, or has no one else received the 'Are you still interested email'?

I called and asked. No email as of yet, not for another week probably. Their class is still overfilled.

Thanks for calling!! This is me right now:

If they are overfilled, why are they going to ask if those of us on the WL are still interested? Did they happen to say?

Good afternoon,

We wanted to provide applicants on our waitlist with an update. We have not admitted any students as of yet from our waitlist, because our census is still several students above the class size. You will hear an updated status from us by June 10th. We are not considering file updates or letters of intent at this time.

Edit: removed contact information

As a courtesy to UCSD and Brian specifically, why don't you remove his contact info off of a public page that students may be neurotically checking in the future. UCSD and Brian have been amazingly communicative and transparent to all of us on the wait list (seriously, UCSD is a shining star in my book because of this), and I don't think a kind way to repay them would be to plaster Brian's contact info all over the web. Those of us who may have legitimate need of contacting him have already received this email directly, so there's really no point in giving every stranger on the internet access to his personal phone - I don't think he'd be super stoked about that. The man has enough on his plate already I imagine.

An excellent notion

To be fair, I would be very surprised if we couldnt just google Brian's contact information with just his name and school affiliation

I'm sure you could find it if you really wanted to, but I didn't find his phone number with a brief Google search.

Regardless, it's more of a professional courtesy in this case. He has treated us really well and I felt like it was a gesture of good faith to give us his personal phone line just in case we needed to contact him. It's not like this was some outrageous blunder or anything (it wasn't), but as future doctors I feel that we should act as professionals and at least be aware of courtesies like this.

I agree wholeheartedly.

You're all being super nice, but Brian actually prefers phone calls over email and he gave out his phone number to everybody - so don't worry too much about him!

Well not too much point in contacting right now unless you have special circumstances, they're supposed to update us within the next two days!

So it begins:

Dear ________:

As you know, you were originally placed on the “waitlist” for the UCSD School of Medicine. The Admissions Committee has completed further review of waitlisted applicants. I regret to inform you of the Committee’s decision to remove your name from this waitlist - your application will no longer be considered for the entering class of 2016.

The Committee feels that applicants who will not be hearing of an acceptance from us during the summer “wait list” period should be encouraged to pursue other opportunities for acceptance. The task of deciding among the many qualified applicants to our medical school is difficult, and we realize that most of the applicants we do not accept will become fine physicians.

On behalf of the Admissions Committee, thank you for your interest in the UCSD School of Medicine.

Released. A little sad they didn't even give me a chance to submit some substantial updates, but alas it is what it is

Sent from my iPhone using SDN mobile app

Yeah it does kinda bother me that there were never any updates accepted. I got a substantial publication after I submitted my secondary, never had a chance to tell them...

Released today! Wasn't exactly holding my breath and I was 99% sure I'd go elsewhere even if I got in at this point, but I'm a teeny bit sad that my alma mater/home-of-eight-years school didn't give me the opportunity to plead my case 🙁. Buh-bye, San Diego! It's been real!:hello:

Anyone not get released? I wonder what percentage of the waitlist got released?
I'd assume most, seems like they over-enrolled. I'd imagine anyone left has a decent shot if they end up needing to pull anyone off the list

I got an email asking if I was still interested in being on the wait list which also gave me the opportunity to send in any updates that have happened. Sorry to see a lot of you guys got released 🙁. I hope everyone is going to great medical schools either way.
