2015-2016 University of Chicago (Pritzker) Application Thread

@NickNaylor, what hotels near campus would you recommend? I'm making a backup reservation in case a student host isn't available.

There's a new Hyatt Express or whatever they call it in the heart of Hyde Park which would probably be the most convenient. There's also lots of food right in the area, and if you decided to walk to campus it would be maybe a 30-45 minute walk, probably 5 minutes driving (and maybe $5 on Uber). There are also buses which run to the campus, but unless you know the area or do your research I wouldn't recommend that as it can be easy to get lost.

I used to recommend the International House on campus as they used to offer cheap housing for university guests, but I'm not sure if they do that anymore. Unfortunately the Hyatt is pretty much the only somewhat nice hotel in the area. There's a Ramada Inn that's also in Hyde Park but I haven't heard great things about it.

@NickNaylor, how do you suggest I get around? I cannot rent a car because I am 20, and you need to be 25 I think to rent a car... would taking a cab or something be best?

Yeah, I would just use Uber. It's cheaper than cabs and it usually takes no more than 5 minutes to get an Uber.

Do they send "application complete" emails or are people just going base on what it says in the portal?

When the "recs" things is highlighted in the portal, then it's complete and will be given a decision shortly. There's no email on that part

Hey guys, I have a very unrelated question.
In MDapps, does "submitted" date mean the secondary or primary submitted date? If that was for primary submit date, then there is no input for secondary submit date, which is actually a very important parameter.

Rejected today
MCAT 34
GPA 3.63 with strong upward trend
Masters completed

Second year applying. I guess it is never meant to be.

Sorry to hear that! If you don't mind me asking, when were you complete?

Just submitted. Not confident about my essays but I need to stop being such a perfectionist if I actually want to get these secondaries done. I hate pretty much everything I write lol.

Hooray! and I'm sure your secondaries have been awesome. You've already got an interview and for MSTP no less, so I would say that's an excellent sign! 🙂

Secondary submission date

Did anyone who got invited to interview and sent their photo in get an acknowledgment that they received it?

I'm mostly concerned about my challenge essays, which the Michigan secondary didn't require. So their invite doesn't provide me that much assurance in that regard haha. But thanks for the encouragement!

It's called Hyatt Place. The only quality hotel in the area. 25 min by foot. There is a 53rd street shuttle that will take your right to campus from harper court (I dont think they check ID like the CTA busses do). uber wouldnt be a bad way to get to campus either. There are plans in the works for 2 more hotels in hyde park, but those probably wont happen until a few years down the line

So I wanted to make sure...I have 5 rec letters sent in, but they only show 3 on my portal. Am I correct in assuming that they will review all 5 still?

That is interesting. You are the second person that has said this. All of my 6 LOEs show up on the portal.

My application has been marked as "complete" for two weeks now. Just curious, has my application been sitting in a queue for review or could that mean that it has been placed under a "virtual hold" as well?

I don't think they use silent holds, as I was placed on an actual hold status.

I had the same problem too, with 4/5 letters showing up in the portal. Give them a week or two, and if it's still not there, I would call and ask about it. When I called, the super nice lady put me on hold for two minutes, and when she came back my letter had been logged.

They will read at least the first 3 LORs, but they don't guarantee that they will read anything more.

So my recs still haven't been marked as received and I'm not sure if I should be concerned at this point. I submitted my secondary 7/5 and my committee letter got uploaded 7/15. I already called about two weeks ago and they said they could see my letter in AMCAS and would download it shortly. Thoughts?

I personally would call/email them in that case. I submitted on the 1st of August and had my letters in around the 3rd.

Is it hard to get an Uber in Hyde Park?

Not really, but it can take about 7 to 15 minutes sometimes to get one if they're not in the area, so just take that into account. There are also bus systems and shuttles that might be running that you can use. You can find them at uchicago.transloc.com, I think.

EDIT: sorry, didn't see the last response. NickNaylor is probably right.

There is the shuttle system for the more adventurous, but to be honest I would just use Uber for getting around Hyde Park since it's so inexpensive and you don't have to worry about figuring out the shuttle or bus system.

I'd second Pritzker being awesome. As a new resident, there's been some growing pains but the training at Pritzker was outstanding and I've felt right at home as a new intern. The school itself is incredible, the staff are incredibly supportive of the students in all ways, and the opportunities to be at a medical school that is closely affiliated with a world-class university are immense. You will receive top-notch clinical training and have a good time in the process. I can't speak positively enough about Pritzker.

Anyone else complete around 7/9 not hear back yet? I feel like I've been waiting forever
