2015-2016 University of South Florida Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Where can you see that?
Once you log on, hit app status, next to app complete it'll say application is ready, if an adcom opened it before then it'll say next to that "Your application was last viewed on xx/xx/2015". Might only be a special case though because I had an adcom look into my app to resolve the disadvantaged status issue mentioned earlier in the thread. Nothing is ever 100% sure in the world of medical school applications.

Does anyone know if they favour students who attended USF as an undergraduate? Does that weigh significantly at all?

Not that I know of. BTW I think you can see when they last viewed your application. If they opened it then it'll say "last viewed on..." I had an adcom check out the disadvantaged question error so right now it says when my app was last viewed on next to my complete sign.
This doesn't always correlate to when they review; it doesn't always change.

this school places a heavy focus on high mcats

Oh, okay thanks! I checked, nothing there for me yet 🙂

how so? In terms of giving out the first batch of II's, or in general? I thought their average MCAT was kinda mid-tier, no?

in general and yes, they're goal is to raise it

Well, I'd hope so. The majority of other Florida schools have terrible MCAT ranges; I'd almost say they were in DO-ranges.
USF's median was a 31 last year, right?

I looked into it...totally baseless assertion. USF couldn't care less about raising their MCAT, their main focus is leadership related. As for the Florida scores they seem pretty reasonable to me? Other than FSU's 28 average...no clue what happened there...

Well I'm not sure where the other person heard about the MCAT, but according to our new dean, one of his priorities is increasing our numbers, particularly the MCAT average. I don't know how they plan to do this (aka how they will attract higher scoring students) but yes, I would agree that based on what I have heard from our dean and other faculty/staff, they are working on increasing the MCAT average.

precisely, thank you

Whoops, filled this one out in early july but forgot to hit submit, rookie mistake haha. Think my app will get tossed for being turned in 4 weeks after being received?

What a beast of secondary :boom:, It is going to the end of queue

I think it depends on the program here. The CORE program will probably have an MCAT bump, but since the SELECT program is more geared towards leadership and emotional intelligence, I'm not sure if their MCAT will jump up that high.

(Disclaimer: I am cycle 2016-2017)

I really feel a pull towards the Select program....but the OOS tuition for all four years feels brutal. How do other Florida residents feel about Select given the huge difference in cost?

Sorry, behind, how does tuition work for both programs...for OOS?

I'm an OOS applicant applying for the Core curriculum because I loved the idea of the Scholarly Concentrations Program... :/ Anyone know anything about how many OOS applicants get into the Core program?

Received the secondary today- out of all the schools that I'm applying to, this is one of my very top choices! My wife loves it too, which is a huge plus! Really hoping for some OOS love. My GPA isn't anything impressive but I feel that my EC's and career interests are an exceptional fit with this school's culture. I LOVE what I've read about the SELECT program and I can't wait to get this application season underway at USF!

Question regarding the secondary-

"How would the USF Morsani College of Medicine’s Scholarly Concentrations Program help your personal career goals?"

So does the SELECT program have the Scholarly Concentration Program as well? In all of my digging around, I suspected that only the CORE program had the Scholarly Concentrations as SELECT was already a learning track of itself.

According to http://health.usf.edu/medicine/mdprogram/core/scp.htm , the Scholarly Concentrations seem to only go along with the CORE program, so if I'm applying SELECT, do I still write towards them? I guess I will since they are an essay prompt and all. What did other SELECT applicants do?

Only Core does Scholarly Concentrations, but I believe everyone writes the essay. At least that's how it was my application cycle.

Why is this thread so dead? Wake up peeps!
Btw, just curious. Anyone goes to USF for undergrad?

I slew the beast! AKA I submitted my secondary to USF yesterday!

Any M3's or M4's out there who would be willing to answer a few questions via DM?

I went to USF undergrad. Do you think this is advantageous?
Maybe a little. One of my teachers told me that only a fraction of the MCOM matriculants went to USF undergrad. So probably not a lot. One of my peers got admitted to Keck School of Medicine but did not get into MCOM.

I am a first year and It seems that about 1/10 to 1/8 of our class went to USF undergrad but that is just my own estimate. They showed us the numbers the first day of class but I can't remember for certain, all I know is that USF undergrads were by far the plurality. There are also quite a few who went to UsF undergrad and then did their masters here as well.

As far as increasing the mcat, they told us that our matriculating class had the highest average MCAT of any school in Florida this year.

Have there been other IIs this cycle or did they just start today?

My app status still says that my application was last viewed on 7/10.. anyone know if this is normal?
