Haha I called them yesterday and they told me to email them about it. They must prefer you.

Does anyone know if CORE or SELECT really has an OOS bias?

CORE has a strong IS bias. It's a public university, and CORE is their standard program.

Interesting, I'm from the Northeast so I was wondering which program as well to go for
SELECT looks pretty attractive to me tbh. I was just afraid of shooting myself in the foot if I were to just choose SELECT rather than CORE+SELECT.

I haven't started working on this app yet- what are the options we can choose? It's not one or the other?

I think that if you're applying for SELECT, they want to see ECs specific to the goals of the program... a lot of working in groups and leadership positions. If you'd really be open to doing either one, it probably wouldn't hurt to apply to both. The app thread from last year has some discussions comparing the two programs, if you're interested. I'm in a tougher spot. I'm IS, so there's a huge financial incentive for me to do CORE, but my ECs and medical goals are more suited to SELECT.

It's select, core, or both

Just to clarify, generally, there is not an opportunity to interview for both. It's one or the other. If you apply for both, they will only choose to interview you for one and not give you the option of which one. For OOS, it doesn't matter much, but for Florida residents it's something to consider if the price tag of OOS tuition for four years is unappealing for you.

This is true re: EC's. It's not just leadership and groups, but also the other competencies of patient centered care and health systems. The interview is also significantly different and is designed to gauge your fitness for the SELECT program with those competencies in mind, as well as some principles of emotional intelligence. That's about all I can say without violating my agreement I signed when interviewing.

What's everyone's opinion on submitting essays that are markedly below the 2000 character limit? I haven't written all my essays, but one I am working on rn is probably only going to be ~1000.

I would think that after reading many applications a shorter essay would be welcomed. I have always looked at it as it doesn't matter how long the essay is as long as you fully answer the question and it accurately represents what you want to tell the committee.

Has anyone's application gone to complete yet? I submitted my secondary on the 10th and they haven't downloaded my LOR's yet it looks like.

I am in the same boat -- I am guessing they will download soon.

Is there any chance they can look down upon selecting both programs?

Hey guys, on the first question, "Public Health" is the closest thing to a hospitalist right?

I plan on working as a physician in a hospital, not really a private practice either. So Public health would suit me best out of all those options right?

a. Please choose the single answer that best describes your career goals:
Private Practice
Academic Medicine
Public Health
Health Care Administration
Health Policy
Other

This could be a stupid question, but what category would primary care fall under?

I actually was thinking of choosing private practice for hospital work. I don't think it matters much bc you have to write an essay about it anyway so you could just mention working in a hospital there.

I think it goes into detail in the SCP descriptions on their website. Public health strikes me more as projects for community health rather than a hospital. Try looking into health care administration?

I dont really see where they talk about those particular options for that question. I see the SCP program options and I talked about that in the other essay where they specifically ask what SCP program would suit you.

I guess a hospital doctor is closest to health care administration then.

I need to turn this secondary in quick though.. I've had it since the 7th of July so I'm already late on it. I'm so ridiculously swamped with secondaries right now.

Submitted my secondary 7/7. Application was marked as complete today after the wait to download LOR.

Haha same here, it's quite intimidating so I go do others ones first and keep putting it off. Gotta suck it up, buckle down and get to it though.

So on the secondary...

"b. Describe the knowledge, skills, and attributes you have developed in preparation for this career path."
What? Like what training do I have to become a doctor? I don't understand

This might help you! I would go with public if you are strictly wanting to work in a hospital. The only reason it's tricky for primary care is if you want to be part of private practice or work for a community health center.

Ahhhhh! Ty for the help but i submitted this thing yesterday. I didnt click that option 🙁. Oh well I'm hoping they pay more attention to my essay than the multiple choice question.

I've seen a few schools that ask something like this. What have you learned/done so far that will prepare you for medical school and the career. What have you learned in and out of the classroom? What are you good at and how will this help you as a doctor?

Way better way of asking the question, thank you.

Did you guys meet the character count? I feel like some of these answers don't need to be 2000 characters

I'm sorry I didn't respond earlier! This site makes my anxiety go through the roof so I try to limit myself to how often I check it! Too much neuroticism and same personalities- there isn't outside world saying "Um, calm down. It's been a day." lol.

Hi everyone! So I have a question about the residency paperwork (I'm from Florida).... should I file as a dependent or independent? Technically I'm a dependent, since I'm under 24, etc. etc. but then on the instructions page for USF it says "NOTE: YOU MUST CLAIM YOURSELF AS "INDEPENDENT" ON THE FORM. All identification materials above must be your own and not your parents. This is for establishment of in state tuition, not associated with Financial Aid." Does this mean that I should submit the form as an independent, even though I'm not...? HELP!

yes claim yourself as independent since you will be entering graduate (medical) school.

Submitted... a few hours before the 2 week "limit." Probably not a problem but I really didn't have any time to do it until now...

Hey guys, does anyone know the stringency on having 5LORs? I have 4, but noted today on MSAR (after submitting last week) the minimum of 5 and max of 10. Their website recommends 5, but then says under the non-traditional section "You still must submit as least 5 letters of recommendation."

Should I be freaking out?

I mean it does say a minimum of 5. Can you try to get one more?

I wound up calling admissions, they said having 4 will have no detriment to your application. I found someone to do a character letter, anyway. I just had everything submitted and done when I read closely. Normally, its an issue to have greater than 3! Never thought to look for a minimum of greater than 2.

Anybody know the average MCAT/GPA for recent entering classes?

Submitted! Applied for CORE and SELECT. Loved the disparity question 🙂

has anyone gotten an II yet?
Not that I know of. BTW I think you can see when they last viewed your application. If they opened it then it'll say "last viewed on..." I had an adcom check out the disadvantaged question error so right now it says when my app was last viewed on next to my complete sign.

Where can you see that?
