Autobiography
Write a brief autobiography. As completely and precisely as possible, give a picture of yourself, your family, and events you consider important to you. In doing so, identify the values that are of greatest importance to you. If you have completed your undergraduate education, please comment on what you have done or have been doing since graduation. (1200 words or less)

Challenge

Please discuss a challenging situation or obstacle you have faced in the past. Why was it challenging? How did you handle it? Knowing what you know now, would you do anything differently? What did you learn? (500 words or less)

Good luck!!! :luck::luck::luck::luck:

Notes
  • Vanderbilt anticipates extending 75% tuition scholarships to 75% of their incoming class.
  • 6700 applications received for 2014-2015 cycle; HEAVY screening for secondaries (only 1600 or so given out)
    • as per the 2014-2015 application thread, applicants surmised that stats greater than or equal to a 3.8 GPA and 37 MCAT were automatically screened in for a secondary. Students below these stats were personally reviewed for secondaries. Note that this has not been confirmed by the Vanderbilt office.
  • 2x waves of decisions: if you interview before mid-November, you should hear back around mid-December. You will be accepted or rejected or placed on hold until February. Another batch of decisions are released in February: results can be accept, reject, or waitlist.
  • Not much waitlist movement in recent years, according to new admissions director/dean
  • Prior match results.

So looking forward to writing this autobiography, NOT. But well worth the effort if I get to visit Nashville.

What is the average the length of time between primary submission and secondary receipt (assuming early June AMCAS submission)?

Last year the first secondary wave came out on July 1st; these were thought to be "automatic" secondaries, as all the recipients had stats > 3.8/37. I'm not sure when the individually-screened secondaries came out, but it was several days thereafter.

Hi guys! I'll be an MS1 at Vandy this summer (how weird to write that!), and I literally can't wait for classes to begin. I'm happy to share my experiences this cycle, Vanderbilt-specific or otherwise, and offer advice on anything you guys might find useful.

Here are some tips for the autobiography portion of the secondary. I used it for two schools and got an interview (and eventual acceptance) at both, so I feel at least something in it was successful.

-Don't write it all in one day. Start brainstorming when you're doing something unrelated, like on a long commute or waiting in line. Just think of some ideas and a few possible intros, and jot them down if you have a chance. Come back to it 1-2 days later and see if you still like it, or if any new ideas come to mind. You'll be surprised how much you end up crossing out.

-Have a general theme in mind before you start. This is true for personal statements too, but you're not trying to answer "why medicine" here. Instead, maybe you decide to make the point that you're extremely self-sufficient and able to adapt quickly to many situations. When talking about your early life, try to emphasize those qualities and show through your experiences how they were shaped. Maybe you'll think of new qualities or a different angle as you write. Maybe you'll have multiple overarching ideas in the end, and that's okay. There's no wrong way to tie your story together. Just always keep in mind a general end point with each paragraph you include.

-This is related to the previous point: when talking about your family, the characteristics of the environment in which you grew up, or, in general, when discussing things that are not you, always keep in mind how you will bring it back to YOU. When I stated mine, I really wanted to share all the unique/crazy things about my home country where I lived for 10 years, which is currently a dictatorship with some really interesting facets about its history and daily life. Pretty quickly, I realized my first two paragraphs would be a great start to a literary novel, but hold barely any mention of me. I ended up keeping a chunk of that for the intro, but limited the descriptives to 3 sentences and emphasized how it shaped my childhood (and subsequently, why we left) in the sentences that immediately followed. You don't want the admissions committee getting lost in your childhood ramblings. Always keep the big picture in mind.

-This goes without saying, but please don't repeat things from your personal statement/rest of AMCAS. This secondary question is about your qualities, not your resume points. Regarding the discussion of things you've been doing since graduation, this question comes up on almost every school's secondary so you'll find it useful to have a crafted response for this that you can add to the end. If you've already mentioned those activities elsewhere, it's sufficient to state them and write 1-2 NEW sentences about how they add to your personal growth. Please don't repeat exact sentences that you've used elsewhere in your application - they read and reread your essays, especially at the time you're being considered for acceptance, so in the best scenario this will not fly under the radar.

I hope this helps! Feel free to PM me with any specific questions.

...As a side note, even though Taylor Swift moved to New York, she reportedly still spends a lot of time in Nashville. And who knows, your airport Uber driver may very well have been her previous personal driver, and will take you on a pit stop to see her condo.... (this actually happened to someone at second look). All the more reason to apply!!!

P.P.S. If you want an idea of what Nashville is like, check out my writeup of Vandy on mdapps (which hasn't been updated in a while cause I'm lazy). If that doesn't make you wanna visit the music capital, you must be red-red-red-red-red-redneck crazy.

Two words.

DREAM. SCHOOL.

I had a job interview at Vanderbilt in 2013. It's probably one of the reasons I looked into the school in the first place. Fell in love with it!!!!!

Oh and Taylor Swift 😛

Is it too hot/humid there?
Will I be walking around with my shirt plastered to my sweaty back at all times?
Asking because I've heard the climate is rough in the South for people who are used to dry heat (Cali)

Tennessee heat is...different. I remembering working in the labs during the summer, having to wear closed-toe shoes, long pants and a t-shirt - It was uncomfortable just walking to Au Bon Pain for a coffee - so jealous of everyone in sundresses! If you're not used to it you'll probably be doused in sweat by the time you get to school from the parking garage (even if you park right at the Children's hospital!)

I was used to heat accompanied by beaches and water, so Tennessee heat was rough for me. Lots of heat and humidity but no beaches, no water... just concrete and buildings.

But it's Vandy! They could put this school in the desert and I would love it.

Also an incoming MS1 here jumping in to help. Obviously I don't have much insight into the school at this stage, but if you folks have any questions about the application process at Vanderbilt let me know. The program starts in July, so all the new MS1s should be well settled in by the time interviews start in earnest.

Y'all this school is the best. Nashville is the best. I can't personally speak to the med school although I have several friends there who LOVE it, but I did my undergrad there (class of 2013!) and am hoping against all hope that I end up there for medical school too!

2 questions.
1. How do people feel about the really condensed preclinical year, as opposed to most schools taking 2 years for that stuff? My friends who are at schools that take 2 years for preclinicals tell me all about the knowledge cramming, though I guess its inevitable. Does everyone feel prepared for step 1?

2. Did anyone else get emails asking them to apply after taking the MCAT? Just trying to see if its something they send to everyone kind of how like we all got loads of spam from colleges during the end of high school.

I didn't get an email, so it definitely wasn't sent to everyone...

Vanderbilt was definitely the most active school in my inbox. I scored quite high on the MCAT tho so idk what their cutoff is for this.

So far they've emailed me 4 times. So I think it must be pretty random.

Finally got a draft of this essay finished yuuuuuuuuuuuuus. Now to revise it a dozen times...

has anyone gotten a secondary yet?

AMCAS isn't releasing materials until July 1st. I'd imagine schools that specifically screen pre-secondary will be somewhat delayed in getting back to you.

For people who dont have 3.8/37, what else does the screen involve? Just ECs and PS?

My Brother got an interview at Vandy 2 cycles ago with a 3.7 GPA and 33 MCAT. His interviewer really focused on his service work, so I say the screen is for ECs, but nothing but an N of 1 to back it up. Sadly, he was waitlisted, now an M2 at U of Michigan.

Interesting, thanks.

Is 37 the automatic cutoff? Where did you find that information?

If I can recall from last year's thread, this is purely speculative... but everyone who reported receiving a secondary in the first initial "wave" on July 1st all had stats above BOTH a 37 MCAT and 3.8 GPA. Folks whose stats who met only one or none of these parameters got their secondaries sometime afterwards, which led everyone to assume that there was a "personal review" step for anyone who didn't meet an initial numerical screen.

There's always the chance that things will be different this year, especially with the new MCAT and later information release date. Good luck guys! I really enjoyed my interview day here. :luck:

Good to know, thank you!

So if a 37 MCAT was the cutoff last year, I wonder what the theoretical "new" score cutoff will be for the first wave secondaries? Or which percentile this correlates to? Also was that GPA the cGPA or the science sGPA?

I only got a 35 and I've gotten a handfull of emails from them, so my guess is that 35 is the cutoff

When did those emails start coming? Because now I'm freaking out that I haven't gotten any since they're my top choice. My MCAT was the new one, but I was 97%-ile and a 3.9 GPA from Vanderbilt undergrad, so I'd assume I make the "cut"?

Those emails are so random though... I wouldn't worry about it.

Don't tunnel vision on the advertisements. Last year Vandy sent me emails and a brochure but never a secondary.

Okay this autobio is actually very fun to write! Will probably end up being longer than the word count to start but this is way better than I expected it to go.

Edit: Hope that I get the opportunity to send this to them!

I got 2 emails, and I thought it was weird bc my stats are SUPER borderline low for this school (sGPA 3.45 cGPA 3.6 and 34MCAT)

Maybe you had to have checked the box thing when you were registering for the MCAT that allowed them to release your name to schools? I think schools can purchase the contact info for certain stats from AAMC

I added Vandy to my AMCAS list, hopefully won't get screened out. 3.7/39 so I did get emails from them, and though I know them to be relatively meaningless, might as well give it a shot. But damn, Nashville looks sweet.

Have connections to Vandy, meet last years cutoffs. Hoping I get a secondary, as this is my #1 top choice!

I think on their website, it says the earliest secondaries won't be given out to the 6th or so?

I'm really hoping for a secondary from this school. I'll be devastated if I don't get one 🙁

Yo I just read your MDApps page. Thanks so much for taking the time to type all those notes out. I just bookmarked it. Its really helpful!!
Also, Salam bro. I think you speak Arabic, I saw you listed Arabic as your ethnicity.

I suspect that they might "superscore" for scores that they send out to US News.

However, I am somewhat skeptical that they truly superscore when they look at applicants for admission purposes.

Otherwise, someone taking it 3 times and scoring 15/1/1, 1/15/1, and 1/1/15 would be seen as better who took it once and scored 15/15/14.
