2016-2017 Tufts University Application Thread

How is everyone filling out the competency page? Just writing I graduated as a bio major demonstrating competency in Biology. Or are you guys writing a paragraph?
You can just do bullet points.
- Bio major
- 3-4 classes that satisfy it

I worked in a cancer lab so I used that to show competency in a few areas.

I wrote 1-2 sentences for each. Really a very silly part of the secondary lol

I agree that it will be silly/awkward for most people, but it is in line with the growing trend of not requiring specific coursework to satisfy the prereqs. Rather, working in a relevant position or taking a course that heavily integrates the skill also fulfills the requirement. I don't know how else they would implement that.

True. To be honest I learned much more about most of those topics in my research and work experiences, but I just listed the courses for simplicity.

Hey friends,

Would an introductory biostatistics class that I am taking this fall for my MS apply to the statistics competency? The course is on my transcript, but I'm uncertain because I haven't taken it yet.

I would say yes! I think most schools are looking for competencies to be fulfilled by matriculation. Sounds like a good way to meet the competency to me.

This diversity question is strange. It's not actually long enough to tell them exactly what would make me diverse unless I just list these things and don't explain how they changed me. This thing is 10 lines long, is stating certain things enough? For example if I say I'm bicultural, does it not automatically give me a set of sensitivities that are different? Or would they rather I actually spell it out for them

IMO, you gotta give them something. I mean, I'm old--like, borderline outlier old--but I can't just bullet point my age and expect that to mean anything without discussing how the experiences gained from being old will contribute to the student body.

Does that answer the question?

As a fellow "old" person, it doesn't count for much. There are younger applicants who have experienced far more than I have without the added 10 years. Speak of the experiences, not because you were older, but because they were experiences that have shaped you.

Isn't that exactly what I said?

For the first prompt (the "any comments" one), would it make sense for me to talk about a senior thesis that I've planned for this upcoming year?

I think it's fine to talk about as long as you haven't already mentioned it on your primary.

"Did you take any leaves of absence or significant breaks from your undergraduate education? (Do not include time off after graduation.)"

For this question- would iI need to write something if I've taken two years off after graduating?

NO, it says do not include time off after graduation.

Also, for the first question, can I elaborate on one of my passions for undergrad that was simply one of my "most meaningful" activities, or does it need to be a "why tufts" essay?

It said ANY thing else, so I actually wrote about balancing duty to the patients versus staff pressure to stick together (I'm a prison RN). Kind of like an integrity/experience with the realities of the world thing. Who knows though....maybe I'm doing this all wrong lol.

If I don't have a formal statistics course from undergrad, can I list my AP credit? Or can I list other courses where statistics was used (ex. intro psych, research...)

Stat is a competency not a pre-req. List your AP credit as well as any practical applications where you also used it.

Could someone please shed some light on how to resize photos on a Mac without distorting the image? It would much appreciated, thank you!

Just checked my status and it says "You are currently under screening process."

Verified 6/10, complete 7/7

Same, complete 7/12, I'm pretty sure that just their version of saying it is complete.

Same status here, but when I checked the portal this morning, that status was not available. It just said "Your application is ready!" So maybe this means people could start hearing back about interviews soon?

Matriculating to tufts as an M1 in a month, traditional MD track. Also lived in Boston for many many years. Feel free to ask me anything about the process, Boston, etc. As school begins I can try to answer more specific questions about student life.

Best of luck from another registered nurse, here (Operating Room)! I also applied here 🙂

Last two years they haven't come out till late August (8/20-8/24) so we have a good long wait ahead of us (unless they mix it up)

As an incoming M1 who applied the last two years, I can tell you that Tufts is pretty consistent in the process. There were a few changes last year. Primarily, they started sending rejections during the year. That being said, when IIs start going out, don't get too panicked if someone who was marked complete after you gets an interview before you. As long as you don't get the rejection, you are still in the running. I was complete within 5 days of getting the secondary and neither of my IIs came until almost Thanksgiving.

Best of luck to all and if you do get a II, I'm happy to answer any questions about travel, places to stay, etc.

Just changed to the status "You are currently under screening process" EXCITED (and nervous)😀

+1 ... Check out the 2012-2013 Tufts Application Thread. People started getting II within 4 days of people being placed "under screening"!!:xf:

Got the status change today too! Best of luck to us all 🙂 Hopefully we will be sharing some II's by next week

+2. Guess applying early does have some perks 😉

So my status changed back to "ready for review" from under screening process... bad sign?

Never mind false alarm!! i did some lurking on the old thread and people who went ready from review --> under screening --> ready for review who got an II.
