2016-2017 University of Central Florida Application Thread

I did not..I thought so too but admissions said I will be receiving everything I needed in the mail

Yeah, I'm just worried about making the two week deadline if I have to wait on USPS and then send it back. They said we could print out the email and send it in that way, so I'm hoping to receive it soon.

1. Yesterday was an interview day.
2. It is a lot of letters for the chair to sign and return to us. We should have them today. They will be put in postal and a dupe send via email, you can use either one to respond.
3. Plenty of time, no stress. This is an easy game.

Hi all! Congrats to everyone who got accepted yesterday -- hoping to join you soon 🙂

I interview here soon, and was hoping some of you who have already interviewed could give me some general info about the interview day, or any specifics re: interview questions/style. Thanks in advance!

This may be a rather neurotic question, but would being classified as "EFI" indicate that there aren't any real red flags in ones application? The reason I ask is due to getting mostly silence from all of the schools I have applied to so far. I know it is important to be patient and not worry too much about II until after Thanksgiving comes, but with a LM that is slightly above the average matriculant's and a completion date of ~2 months ago, I can't help but wonder if maybe there was something wrong with my application or a letter wasn't as good as I thought it would be being that I've heard next to nothing from schools yet. Thanks!

What are your stats?

Congrats! Did you get a financial aid package? Just wondering what kind of financial aid is offered to OOS peeps.

I didn't fill out FAFSA yet so I don't think I'm eligible for any government based financial aid. Ive only received an email of my acceptance after my call. I heard from past students that the school does consider you for merit based scholarships so I'm hoping I get some notification of that later down the line. UCF is one of my top choices but I have to admit OOS tuition is a bit steep. I'll let you know if I hear anything back about financial aid or scholarships though!

Here is a question: My husband and I are considering a trip to Florida to visit family sometime between December 17 and January 7 since we will both be on break from our graduate studies for the winter, and plan to make a trip to Orlando; that being said, it would be LOVELY if I could coordinate an interview during this time to UCF should I receive an ii (which I am still hopefully waiting on), as I'd be in the area already and won't have to pay for an additional trip (which is a very big deal for two, newly-married grad students). Do you think it is worth reaching out to discuss this? UCF is my primary choice for school and I also don't want to hurt my application in asking. Thank you everyone!

I don't see any reason why this would be inappropriate. Granted, I don't think it will help you get an interview per se if you weren't already near the top of their applicants under serious consideration for an interview invite, but they are humans too and understand the cost factor involved with long travel and how difficult that is to arrange in the middle of the semester. From what I've seen/heard from @REL, I'm sure they would be more than willing to take that into consideration and not have it reflect poorly on you in any way.

Thank you so much for your reply! I have seen many members advise against contacting a school, and I was unsure if this was appropriate. I will likely contact the school sometime this week!

I think after receiving an II that this would be a great idea, but I wouldn't ever contact a school to arrange an interview before ever getting one. It just seems inappropriate but that is just my opinion, maybe others can chime in on this

This is, indeed, where my concern lies and why I asked on here. I would appreciate more input before I do anything inappropriate.

We are always open to "in the area" emails and try to be very sensitive to the time and cost of travel. The committee makes the decision, but the admissions office is the conduit.

Thank you so much, REL! I couldn't have been more reassured! I'll conduct an email and hope that, should I receive an interview, I could work out the timing. Thank you again!

That's really amazing how understanding this school is. Glad to be proven wrong, hope it works out for you 🙂

Many programs are open to "in the area" emails from those who are coming a fair distance away. With that being said, our program is different in the way we think and do things. I strongly feel that the more an applicant knows the better we all are with regard to projected outcomes. We have to partner in the process of admissions.

My teacher told me I'm less likely to be accepted to UCF because I attend UCF for undergrad .... Crushed because UCF is my number 1 choice :/

What on earth was their reasoning for that?

It's statements like these that make me willing to donate a kidney just so I can get an II to UCF. Easily the most friendly and helpful admissions office staff I've dealt with.

He was part of the admissions committee and explained that you are less likely to be accepted if you attend the institution for undergrad, I'm not sure as to why

Well, I don't have any data on this, so I guess I can't say for sure. But I feel like this is a baseless statement. If anything, I'd think that home institutions would be pleased to have qualified undergraduate students in their medical school classes.

I'm in a similar situation! Did you just email the admissions committee directly? Or did you upload something to your portal?

I know quite a few people (M1s to M4s) that went to UCF for undergrad who currently attend UCF COM not including those that were accepted and decided to go elsewhere. I'm not saying your professor is wrong but I would be surprised if it truly decreases your chances.

Here is some AAMC data for you. Over the last 3-year data period roughly 850 UCF undergrads applied to MD programs and about 190 UCF undergrads have been accepted to an MD program; over the last 3 year period, right at one-third of them are attending UCF COM. Considering there were about 15,000 applicants over that same three years, the percentage in the class seems quite reasonable.

And I thought I was just being biased, that is solid

Does anyone know who makes up the admissions committee? Deans? Faculty? Alumni? Students? Orlando area doctors? Combination of the group? Just wondering about the size and makeup of the team?

Also, any idea if the committee is also part of the interview process? Do committee members interview or only select those for the interview?

what kind of updates are they looking for? I have a new publication to add but do they want ECs and volunteer work that is new as well?
