2016-2017 University of Illinois Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Hi all,

As an OOS applicant with very few interviews thus far, I was shocked to receive an II here. I'd really love to talk to someone who interviewed here and it's be ESPECIALLY helpful to talk to an OOS person who interviewed here. Please reach out to me! Thanks. 🙂

I'm OOS that interviewed and was accepted here! PM me if you have any questions

Can anyone in the special curricular programs speak on them? Specifically, anyone in the Urban Med program?

Yeah, I'm also interested in hearing about the special curricular programs. Do people do these things and find them to be beneficial/fulfilling/manageable?

@YungGeezy, these are really good questions to post on the Facebook group (since I saw that you were accepted 🙂). A lot of M1s and M2s are on it, plus they don't seem to visit this thread very often. I know the Facebook group has been quiet, but I think someone has to just get the conversations started.

Once someone answers, I'm happy to summarize their replies on this thread to benefit the people not in the FB group.

Has anyone else received this email?
"We would like to let you know that your application is still under consideration and that as soon as we complete the interview process in March we will have an update for you. We know that this is a very strenuous time for you, but were hoping to alleviate some of the stress by letting you know that you are in a very select group of excellent individuals under active consideration to become a member of our Fall 2017 class. Thank you for your interest in the University of Illinois College of Medicine."

I got it on Feb. 3rd and am wondering if it means a "hold" or a waitlist or something like that. Maybe it's too early to assume any of that? Not sure why it says "very select group of individuals" though. I'm probably reading too much into it lol

OOS from a Megacity on the southwest coast of the USA. Sent in Campus selection ~01/31. Listed preference as 1. Chicago, 2. Peoria, 3. Rockford.

Got Rockford. Just FYI for people still waiting for acceptances.

Interested in GMED program. Wondering if any current students could shed light on whether getting admitted to this program would affect switching campus selection? Thanks mucho

Not a current student but yes, getting into GMED would automatically have you switched to Chicago. A good friend of mine was originally placed in Peoria last year and switched to Chicago after getting into GMED and has confirmed that this is true for all Med programs. Also all three of the people I know who applied to some sort of Med program got in (though one withdrew when she got off the waitlist someplace else) - I get the sense from this that it's not that hard to get in, especially since I think I lot of people withdraw acceptances from UIC in general (that OOS tuition...)? Good luck!

When did you interview?

Look on the last page and you'll see that a several of us have received that email. I'm on the skeptical side with how hopeful I should be or how significant this email is.

I personally find the language of the email ("hoping to alleviate some stress", "very select group of excellent individuals") frustrating since it implies we are in a good position while being very vague about the likelihood of an acceptance. Why hype it up like that or tell us we should feel better if there's still a very real possibility that we'll be rejected or waitlisted in the end? The email could have simply stated ~"you aren't rejected/waitlisted yet, but you'll get an update in March"

Regardless, it's still good news. I'm just bitter about how it leads you on lol

anyone placed in chicago recently?

Is there any established channel to try to change the campus you've been assigned to?

So this may be a dumb question but does anyone know what the process is to withdraw an acceptance from here? Should I just email admissions and say that I'm withdrawing or should I call or is there a place to do it online somewhere? How do I get my deposit back - will they mail me a check or...?

The adcom should be meeting this Thursday, right? How soon after the meeting, does the portal reflect their decision? Really nervous here!

I went from applicant in process to application in process? Anyone else?

Same. I had been stuck on the applicant in process since September...maybe they are re-reviewing our files? who knows. Does yours now say, "Application is in Process" or just "Application in Process", ha not like that "is" probably even matters.

Haha just checked it says "application is in process"

I just got an email about accessing my financial aid award letter, but can't access the site its on. Has anyone gotten access to it, and if so, how? I want to see how much no money I'm getting from UIC

Sameeeee idk how to either! I have called the admissions office and its going to voicemail :arghh:

@1FireAtATime

When anyone learns how to do the following, could he or she post it on SDN? Confused...

"In order to view your award letter, you must activate both:

  • Your Netid and password
  • Your Enterprise ID and password"

So I called and asked, and they said that they are having problems with their systems and they are working to fix them. They were getting bombarded with phone calls, so they definitely know that there is a problem. They said that they would be emailing everyone once its resolved (hopefully by the end of the day, they said). I'm not feeling hopeful for today though

are you placed in the chicago campus or else where? I am wondering why I haven't received any net ID, although I was accepted since october

Yeah, i was placed in Chicago. And I have not received a NetID yet either. I had a UIN number in the email today, but that was it

Did you guys receive a token 7 days after being admitted?
Nope. Did you?

I did not. Darn. Im itching to see this financial aid - it will make or break my decision! I was placed in Chicago as well. I'll try calling tomorrow

So besides getting my campus placement recently, I haven't heard anything from them. Nothing about setting up a netid or tokens. Also, on my application portal it says they still have not received my transcript or a Hep B form...... what needs to be done with those??? Anyone else in the same boat? I actually felt A LOT better just reading that others also don't have access to their netid.

Placed in Peoria, btw.

I'm pretty much in same boat, although my transcript has been recieved as I sent it in November. I've completed my Hep B requirements but my portal still says that it hasn't been received, I called about it and learned that they will take a look at in later on.

So I just called the financial aid office and was told that I should be receiving an email within 3-4 business days with the Token number so that I can active my NetID and if I don't, to fill out a form on the help/report a problem under the resources and support tab

Great, that probably means next week... Thanks for the update

Hey guys. Last night I filled out a form on the help/report a problem and they sent me an activation key this morning. I was able to check out my financial aid package through that. No scholarship or grants for me, just a lot of loans 🙁

Were your pre enrollment forms already completed?

Sent from my Pixel using SDN mobile

Are you OOS? Also before you filled a help/report did they send you an email about your financial aid?

I am IS and yeah I got an email saying that my financial award letter was available to see but it didn't include the activation key that I needed to activate my account.

Do you know where or how we complete the Hep B form and if they pull the transcripts from AMCAS or if I have to send those in to them?

SideNote: I submitted a help/report thing and they emailed me back with my tokens, so I was able to set up my NetID and email account along with viewing the financial aid.

The Hep B form is basically all the immunization requirements via castle branch. When you log into castle branch, it will list all the immunizations needed. You also need to send an official transcript from your college directly to UIC, they don't pull it from AMCAS

I'm OOS and after seeing that response, I filled out a help/report. I originally got an email from financial aid telling me my award letter was ready

So just got the token and UIN emailed to me and was able to view my award letter... I was awarded all loans to cover the full cost of attending as an OOS. Scares me to think I would be borrowing close to 100k to attend. Will have to compare to my financial award letter from my other acceptances before I make a decision. UIC is great but the cost is bone chilling as an OOS.

Even as an IS it's expensive. Check out the summer fees that they charge during M2 and M3. 2 of my private school acceptances are the same price as my IS when looking at all 4 years' cost. So if there is no scholarship listed in the financial aid report does that mean there is no chance of an institutional scholarship?

Yeah I was hoping that there would be some form of institutional aid in there but that may exclude me as I am OOS. There may be internal scholarships after year 1? Maybe a current student can comment on whether this is the case...?

I also received the information, but I haven't yet submitted FAFSA. Will I have award information already? I would assume not. How did you access the information though?

I filed out my fafsa and sent it to them at the beginning of the year. I don't think you can get an award letter without filling out FAFSA if I am not mistaken unless it is merit. I got the email form their financial aid office on how to access it and another in setting up an account over the past few days.

I got the email to set up my account, but I don't have an award letter as of yet. My FAFSA was received 12/29....

I got my token this morning, but nothing yet from financial aid. I'm also OOS and I agree that it is pretty much the most expensive in the country. Hopefully some kind of scholarship opportunity opens up down the line.

In the same boat here. Granted there are a few schools that are slightly worse but still, I feel irresponsible going to a school that'll cost me so much in the long run

Is UIC your top choice?
