2016-2017 Vanderbilt University Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Did anyone happen to call the office about merit scholarships?

Don't they tell you when they call if you got a scholarship or not

No portal update about scholarship, but I was told in my phone call and it was mentioned in the email sent a few days later.

Portal rejection. ****. Didn't expect that. You'd think they would at least have the decency to email, too. Well, good luck everybody who made the waitlist. This is turning into a really ****ty application cycle and week, and I don't wish the same on anyone else. My sincerest hopes that you all end up in a program you love.

I just checked my portal. It updated but I never received an email notifying me. Also, the msar said that vanderbilt places all students not accepted on their waitlist... My response seems more like a rejection than being put on a waitlist...

Was it "The Admissions Committee has completed its review of your application and it is with sincere regret that we are unable to offer you a place in our incoming class."? That's what I got, and it sounds as much like a rejection as any other one I've gotten.

Guys, portal updated. Waitlisted

What was the wording on your portal? I (and I think Quiescentcat95 as well) got "The Admissions Committee has completed its review of your application and it is with sincere regret that we are unable to offer you a place in our incoming class," which I'm assuming is a rejection and not a waitlist.

The application cycle isn't over, so there is still hope. If you're interviewing at schools like Vanderbilt, I am confident that one day you will become a doctor!

Thank you; I appreciate that. I'm just hoping it will happen this year... I don't want to go through this long slog of stress and waiting again. I had enough interviews that I'm still hopeful for this year, but I definitely top-loaded my schools list, so I'm certainly uncertain as to my chances... Wish me luck, I guess!

I was explicitly told that I was placed on the waitlist

Waitlisted as well. It just says "you have been placed on the waitlist". Congrats to all accepted! Don't know if I am going to stay on the waitlist

Wait listed as well. Little bittersweet because this is my top school, but I can't say I am surprised. I am going to stay on it for the long haul and hope to get in!

That's what I figured., thank you for the clarification, and good luck!

I guess I'll be unwatching this thread since I'm out of the running now, so best of luck to everyone else on the waitlist as well!

Edit: my phone auto-corrected "best of luck" to "goddamned luck". Sorry about that...

Also explicitly told I've been placed on the waitlist. Congrats to those accepted and good luck to everyone else!

I have also heard that Vandy under accepts initially to make sure they don't go over the class size of 88 and then back fill with waitlists...is there any truth to that statement?

Perhaps, on MSAR it says last year 10 were taken off the waitlist

Just got the waitlist email/letter. It was worded very nicely!

Congrats to those accepted! I was waitlisted as well.

Does anyone know how many applicants are waitlisted on average? Just trying to gauge my chances of acceptance

I was an MD and MIDP applicant. I received the waitlist in December and the wording was "While we are not able to offer you an immediate invitation to join the class at this time, we will place you on our waitlist and will reconsider your application throughout the admissions season. If we extend an acceptance to you at a later time, you may need information concerning financial assistance before acting on the invitation. To enable us to provide you with a financial aid package expeditiously, we suggest that you provide us with the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) while you are on the waitlist; our school code number is 003535."

Congrats to those accepted! Fingers crossed for us waitlisted 🙂 🙂

Maybe a stupid question, but is there any non-merit aid? Or should we plan on taking out COA in loans if we didn't get a merit scholarship?

If I remember correctly from my interview day, there is some need-based aid available in the forms of grants that's given based on your FAFSA and CSS Profile. I can't remember what percentage of the total EFC is given in grants? Maybe somebody else remembers a bit more, but I do remember hearing something about grants.

There is some need-based grant aid available, with a maximum limit of somewhere between 14k-15k per year.

Anyone know if there has been any wait list movement yet? In previous years, they started moving around this time.

I see that the event for tonight is formal.

Anyone know if there are gonna be any informal gatherings this weekend?

A group could even check out the broadway nightlife....for science of course

Anyone that went to second look this weekend have any idea when this week they're mailing financial aid decisions? Also, are they only snail-mailing them, or do we get an online version and snail mail version too?

Does anyone know if they will match financial aid offers? or work with us at all in terms of financial aid?

Hi guys, I was just wondering if someone could comment on their experience at second look. I am on the waitlist here and went to a second look this past weekend that really impressed me, so I would like to know if you all felt the same at Vanderbilt, or if it was less than you expected.

Does anyone know if there will any waitlist movement before May 1?
Also admitted students, what are your thoughts after second look/ will you be matriculating?
