2016-2017 Vanderbilt University Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I called today and they said that they "don't know when calls will go out bc it depends on when the admissions committee makes their decisions". I think this means that we've got a long wait ahead of us folks.
That stinks.. It's gonna be way past "mid-Feb" that they said they will release decisions in.

Not necessarily, last year a similar thing happened where someone called and they replied similarly, but decisions were released a few days later

Does anyone else randomly check their portal hoping a decision will somehow be there (even waitlist or reject)

I forget: are they non-rolling, or have some acceptances been given already?

Semi-rolling-- they released one wave of decisions in December, and then the second wave hopefully soon

I'm pretty sure it's just wishful thinking tbh

You're probably right. Now that I've been thinking about it, I vaguely remember someone saying the week of the 28th at the very end of the interview day. I had forgotten it until yesterday.

Well that's frustrating. If that's the case, I wish they wouldn't bother to advertise a "mid-February wave" if decisions wouldn't be out until March.

They don't even interview that many applicants, is it that hard to get out timely decisions? Kind of annoying more so I make travel plans for which Second Look to go to since there are a lot the same weekend as Vanderbilt's.

I agree completely. Vanderbilt is my number one program, so if I don't get in I really need to decide upon which school to go to for second look. It is difficult for me to even think about the other programs just because my heart is so set on this program. Hope that we hear back soon, so I can go ahead and starting making the necessary plans.

In an update I sent a few weeks ago they said I could expect to hear back in mid to late February, so hopefully that's still true!

This is brutal haha.

I'm guessing Monday, at this point. It's a bit late today to start getting all these calls out, with how many they'll need to make. And I'd think they would want to do it in one day.

That central time zone though..

I guess... I'm sure they'd be up late making calls, though, if they did start now. They have what, 100 people to call? 200?

God, it would be nice, though... I could definitely use an acceptance from Vandy today. Though of course today is also the day I have to go work in the lab room which has no cell service for a few hours. Ugh, this is a slog of an application season to get through.

If my memory is correct, I believe the last time they did acceptances (December wave), calls started fairly late in the afternoon Friday, continued late into Friday evening, and went through Saturday at least.

I received my call on a Saturday at around 2 ET or so

Well, I sincerely doubt they're going to start at 7 PM, and I doubt that if people have been called, nobody would have posted thus far. I think it's safe to say that we're still waiting for another day.

I'm still not sure how I feel about the 1-year preclinical, but I hope those calls come out today.

I think it's awesome in theory. My only concern was how residency directors view the clinical rotations since they are P/F. But match results will be out soon and this year's graduating class is the first on the new curriculum, so we'll see how things panned out! I'm sure same as normal, though.

What makes it seem awesome to you? I mean that in a non-accusatory way. I'm sure the vanderbilt match list and step 1 scores will continue to be incredible, but chopping an entire year off still seems unusual.

Sure it's a bit more fast paced than other schools, but it's P/F anyway so you just gotta pass. But I like it because it gives you 1) so much more time for clinical electives during third year before the match to decide exactly what you want to do and get more experience in that field 2) much more time for research and publications in your specialty of interest.

Also keep in mind most schools now are 1.5 preclinical, so it's chopping off an extra 0.5 years only.

I agree with all that flyingeagle said, but in addition, I'd note that schools like Vanderbilt which have switched to the 1 year preclinical curriculum saw an increase in step scores. More schools are doing it, Harvard for example, and Duke has been doing it for decades. The biggest thing for me, other than the obvious (more time in clinicals, for research, and for electives) is that you get a year of application of the preclinical knowledge in real cases to help it stick, which has to be more useful than just hearing it all rehashed again in the classroom for another year. Certainly every student at schools with this type of curriculum who I talked to said that things stuck way better for them after seeing them in person. My guess is that over time the 1 year preclinical program will become the norm.
