2019-2020 Kansas City University of Medicine and Biosciences (Kansas City) KCU-COM

I was complete on 8/2 and still have not received an email from here. Should I be worried? I have been constantly checking for an email for the last couple of days as the 7-day timeline (which I haven't officially found anywhere tbh) has passed. Is this a silent rejection?

Chill, that one week timeline is to verify your secondary is complete. It takes a bit longer for II sometimes.

This is helpful!
I stayed at Hotel Indigo, downtown KC. Nice rooms, maybe a slight discount for KCU interview and they provided a travel voucher for the ride to the school. They also have a small gym that is open early enough to get a pump on before interview day. The restaurant/bar that's attached has good skillet omelettes.

I didn't get a secondary until September, so I wouldn't sweat it.

Does anyone know what kind of interview they implement here? I can’t seen to find any information on it.

I spoke too soon. II today!! Complete 8/8 OOS applicant. Scheduled 9/10 in Joplin! My 1st II and pretty excited about this one!
Must feel great to get a II! 🙂 I'm still nervously waiting and hoping for one LOL

What makes Kansas City your top choice out of the 10 interviews you have? Also, congrats! That's very impressive.

1.) urban area
2.) close to my family
3.) good match list
4.) established program with a good reputation

Would it be ok to email them and ask to change our campus preference? Or would that be bad?

II yesterday.
I am not offered to interview at Kansas City and would prefer to interview at that campus instead. Is it okay to call them and ask to interview there instead? Would it look bad?
I understand that the email states "The campus location where you interview will not affect your decision" I would just prefer to interview the campus that I would like to attend to have a better sense of idea of the facility

Did you put down both as your choice?

Hey guys! I'm an M2 at the KC campus, I'll be following this thread to answer any questions 🙂
Are most of your classmates (and yourself) happy with their choice of attending this school? Are classes mandatory or recorded?

Another M2 in Joplin, but I'd say I'm happy with my choice and many of my classmates that I talk with. We also really get along as a class and I really like that. Most classes are not mandatory and only a few are not recorded. Otherwise, classes are recorded so you can watch again later or for the first time (if not required that is)

First year here at KC campus, so only been in class a couple weeks, but it’s good so far, pretty much everyone in the class is really cool. Only a few lectures are mandatory, like we have 3.5 hr of mandatory bioethics on Monday, but that’s not every week. And pretty much all other lectures are recorded.

Thanks for answering! Would you say your classes kinda feel like one bjg family and everyone ge

Thanks for answering. Would you say that your classes kind of feel like one big family compared to having like 600-700 people in your undergrad classes? Has it been easy to make friends? Lot's of group work? Also is the housing pretty decent around campus? Like would you need to get a car/bus or is walking to school what most of your classmates do? Are there a lot or options for housing?

I am happy with my choice. The school is very receptive to student feedback and I enjoy our curriculum style. KCU was my top choice DO school, and I'm really glad to be here. Your question about recordings has been answered-- I don't attend class unless it's not recorded!

I wouldn't say it's necessarily one big family, more like different cliques of groups of friends, but everyone is generally friendly with each other and there's definitely bonding that comes out of going through this together. I would say it's easy to make friends and housing will depend on where you're from-- I'm from South Florida, so to me the housing here is really cheap, while I know others from more rural places find it expensive. There are a lot of options at different price points though, which is nice. You need a car unless you live at CT (which is across the street from the KC campus), but regardless you will need a car come 3rd year.

In a sense I'd say. Making friends for me was hard at first, but that is my personality. The school is really supportive and through orientation I met some great people I hang out with and study with. But our class we get along well and I appreciate that. Group work, depends on the course but many study together. Housing is pretty good in Joplin at least. I live across town, but that is 10 minutes (15 if I go for coffee), so everything is close. But you'll want a car. There is taxis, Une rd and Lyft but not a big public transit area. A few live right down from school and walk in nice weather but they even have a car for errands. Some rent houses, some live in apartments.

I cant speak for the housing situation in KC. I didn't interview there either so not familiar with the area.

To add on to my post, public transport in KC sucks so even if you live at CT and plan on not having a car, you'll need to at least have a reliable friend who will drive you for errands and stuff.

Scheduled for 9/25 in Joplin. Was hoping for KC but there were no dates available!
Either way, this is my first DO interview and I am stoked!

Congrats to you for getting that interview!
I'm currently a first year down here in Joplin, procrastinating studying for my pending immuno exam. Feel free to ask questions! Excited to meet you all when you come to Joplin for interviews!

Hi!

What made you choose Joplin over KC? I'm OOS from the East Coast - a little nervous about that tornado that hit a few years ago lol

M2 post exam so I can hop in to answer some questions as well.

As for the tornado, the big one you've heard about hit in 2011. Some on here who are more native to the area can speak more than I can about that experience but I would say because of it, the community is very prepared. We had a smaller one hit north of the area this past spring and from what I recall, there was only property damage and no casualties. The lecture hall is the campus tornado shelter space and multiple apartment complexes now have a space as well. They will tell you about it so you are prepared, not to scare you.
