Yeah, I'd agree with what someone else said. It's a school that had problems in the past (definitely lower tier for an M.D) but now has been ambitiously climbing and working out all the kinks. It is hell bent on being top 30, thats why for example its been recruiting high MCAT scorers to accelerate that movement. Big infusions of money (most obvious is the huge new med school campus in downtown, but others as well like better faculty and education directors) mean it's fairly serious about it. I think being in downtown Tampa with this many backers means it's inevitably going to go up, other places won't be able to compete. How far is the question: will it stay at top 50? top 30? Maybe one day even top 20?? Who knows if they will make it that far because those schools are quite insular.
Thanks for the response. Is there a specific "problem" you're referring to? Accreditation issues, hospitals closing, or just generally wasn't thought of as a top ranking school?

Oh no, no terrible issues like Drexel's hospitals closing...there are fantastic hospitals from what I've heard. A hospital like Tampa General Hospital is not going to stop you from doing anything as you can imagine lol.

Just that for years I think a lot of students who went there a little "too chill" or something, so it wasn't like some ultra prestigious/competitive school. Nothing bad, just not extraordinarily good.

There isn’t any abhorrent problems; USF is a great program in Florida that is well known especially for its cancer center. There are two more prestigious universities in FL, but USF is not a negative at all; they will give you the ability to match where you want to go.

The only “issues” are quality of life/adcom related such as :Subpar matriculating classes and step scores causing them to switch from P/F to graded preclinicals, the desire for adcoms to attempt a push in the rankings appearing almost desperate-like as seen through interview vibes and high stat whoring, traffic and distance from rotations, etc.

It really isn’t anything to do with the quality of the education offered, just nitpicks about administration. USF will give you a solid platform to go where you want to go

Yeah well they probably should’ve thought twice before admitting me because I’m chill as ****

Seems like every CORE MD candidate has been waitlisted since late October lol. I’m sure there are some that were accepted but it’s overwhelming

Anyone know when the Financial Aid Packets usually come out? Also is the CTE deadline really 4/30? That's so early compared to every other school

Where is it in print that their CTE deadline is 4/30 or did someone from their office state that?

I have not interviewed here, but MSAR shows 4/30 as CTE date. Their website simply states:
Deadline for Regular MD and MD/PhD applicants to withdraw acceptance in order to comply with the AAMC Traffic Rule stated below.
By April 30 of the matriculation year (April 15 for schools whose first day of class is on or before July 30), for Regular MD and MD/PhD programs, each applicant who has received an offer of acceptance from more than one school or program choose the specific school or program at which the applicant prefers to enroll and withdraw his or her application, by written correspondence delivered by regular or electronic methods, from all other schools or programs from which acceptance offers have been received.

So, I think they only make you go down to 1 acceptance and not actually commit on 4/30. Someone may have heard something different from the interview or acceptance packet though.

Had an interview coming up and was just informed that it will now instead be completed online. Can anyone tell me more what I would’ve learned about the school, campus, curriculum, student camaraderie, etc on interview day now that I am unable to visit.
With my low scores I probably am not much of a viable candidate for them (no R or II yet...fingers crossed), but without giving away my identity let's just say I know a lot about the USF Med peeps/school - it's basically been my second home for many years.

Most of the faculty and general vibe is great. I'm glad I'm still on their radar as they're still on mine. However, if you've been to a large research Uni like USF, especially with a major player like Moffitt always staring at you from across the parking lot 🙂, there's a lot of emphasis on numbers and a lot of competition...maybe even in a P/F class. In word, the students will probably tell you there is a lot of comradeship and support - in deed, however, I think sometimes they are putting the Ivy League paranoia into practice before they actually have the creed or faculties to support that kind of stress.

The pros, however, are Tampa is a beautiful place to live with beautiful people (not specifically the USF area but you know...Fletcher Walmart has its charm XD) You can walk across the street to a top US theme park and are a "quick" 40 min drive from watching sunsets on award winning beaches with some pizza any time you feel like braving the traffic. USF is connected to some very well-known names and hospitals, and academically I believe their connections go quite high, as well. Some of the best teachers I've had in my life are USF Med profs, and some of the best physicians I've shadowed are USF Med grads. I'm def. biased, but just an overview...

I usually lurk on this page but I know it sucks not being able to go in-person if you can't get into the campus/vibe so hopefully this helps. I'm not a med student there (yeeet ..) but hope this helps. Stay safe and sane, meddie friends.

This would be a great question to ask the Admins in the Facebook group! My 2 cents is that they just follow normal AAMC traffic rules so PTE is 4/30. Be on as many waitlists as you want after 4/30 but you can only hold 1 A after 4/30. There’s no listed CTE but you can defer acceptance until June 1st so I’m guessing sometime then. UF has the same rules with PTE 4/30 and CTE in July.

This is correct. Michelle confirmed that we should only be holding 1 acceptance after 4/30, but that we can remain on waitlists at other schools. Also, there is no official CTE date but they do encourage us to make our final decision (officially accept/withdraw our spot) as soon as possible. If any of this information changes, they will notify us via email.

From post interview email:

“The deadline for “Commit to Enroll” is July 5th. However, the sooner an applicant chooses to “Commit to Enroll”, the better. We understand that this is a very big decision for students to make and realize that many accepted students are still on waitlists for other institutions.”

so yeah

4/30: can only hold one A
7/5 : commit to enroll deadline

The Medical Student Selection Committee (MSSC) meets regularly to discuss MD interviews. At this time, we will no longer accept application updates unless specifically requested by the interviewer at the time of the interview.

Thank you Letters/Emails

Applicants are welcome to send thank you letters or thank you emails. However, the applicant should not expect a response from the interviewer. If sending a written thank you note via mail, you may send it directly to our admissions office at 560 Channelside Drive, MDD 3, Tampa, FL, 33602.

Waitlisted Students

Students placed on the waitlist may experience movement until the start of classes which is July 27th for Core. Please note that the waitlist is NOT ranked. Consistent with our published policy, and in order to uphold the highest level of integrity for all our applicants, we cannot divulge any information as to an applicant’s status on the waitlist.

Letters of Intent

Our office does accept letters of intent in the event that you are certain that you will matriculate to USF Health MCOM, if accepted. You may send this electronically to [email protected] and we can add it to your file. We ask that applicants wait to send letters of intent until a decision has been made on your interview.

Plan to Enroll/Commit to Enroll Deadline

Accepted students have until April 30th to hold multiple acceptances. By this date, students must notify our office of their decision to “plan to enroll” or withdraw their acceptance. You may do this by using the AAMC Choose Your Medical School tool.

The deadline for “Commit to Enroll” is July 5th. However, the sooner an applicant chooses to “Commit to Enroll”, the better. We understand that this is a very big decision for students to make and realize that many accepted students are still on waitlists for other institutions.

Thank you VERY much for posting this!!! Do you know if the CTE deadline is a change from 4/30 due to negative feedback, or was it always 7/5 and were people speculating otherwise just misinformed? In any event, this is huge, since people won't have to make a binding commitment without knowing financial aid, although they still might have to select PTE without it. Also, this allows people to remain on WLs through May and June, when the bulk of the movement will occur. Thanks again!!!

I know how much I would appreciate this info if I wasn’t in the loop so yw friend! I interviewed virtually this week and received this email after. So it’s very possible this info on deadlines is relatively new but I have no way of knowing if it was due to applicant feedback.

Email was signed Edwing Daniel, Assistant Dean of MD Admissions.

How do you know? Honestly just looking at the specialty representation and the programs that people match into it looks better than previous years.

Sent from my iPhone using SDN

I heard from a current student. But do not quote me on that, they could have false/inaccurate information. Those that did not initially match had to scramble last minute.

I mean they have 174 people who graduated and 174 matched

Match lists don't show who did not match and had to scramble through SoAP. By the time match day comes around, most unmatched students found a training program somewhere, although often not in their intended specialty. This is why 2/7 who intended ortho may be on the list...the other 5 then scramble and may be listed only as general surgery or IM and you can't tell who they are.

Someone affiliated with USF actually reached out to me and said that there were 25 students who went through SOAP on this list but it is not clear whether those were only members of this year’s class or if that number includes people who failed to match last year as well.
This is concerning. However, can someone comment on whether they believe this situation is a reflection of the quality of the program/resources available to students? Maybe this is why they changed their grading system from P/F back to ranked.

It’s been ranked for the past few years. I don’t think it was ever ranked before the P/F.

Ngl UCFs match list is far superior to USFs. I would assume USF would do better every year especially since they are pulling in “better test-takers” but I am not sure what happened this year and if it is indicative of USFs internal drawbacks.

Agreed, especially for an institution that has the 2nd most research dollars behind only U of F and also has a home program in every specialty. Why should matching ever be such an issue?

Doesn’t make any sense. You would think they would match a good amount at least into their own programs. But apparently not.. I still can’t understand what is USF lacking. If they have the scores, the research capabilities, other pertinent resources, what else would they need?
