2020-2021 Columbia VP&S

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I just got one today and the only date available to me was this coming Monday

Fun fact: I submitted my secondary 3 months after receiving it and 10 minutes before the application deadline. So I think that 2-week turnaround rule is mumbo jumbo!

It depends on the school, some are more serious about it than others....but also I just looked at your MCAT/GPA and that rule doesn't count for you lmfao

Congrats on all the folks who got IIs at Columbia . Just wanted to ask if any non-Canadian international student heard back yet?

Nope :/ I honestly think Columbia may not offer interviews to non-Canadian internationals, because on MSAR it seems they only accept Canadians.

Wait really? I think they have very rarely accepted non-Canadian intls but according to their FAQ they do accept them as long as they have US undergraduate degrees.
I really wish they would release stats on how many intls students with and without US-based undergrad degrees are actually interviewed and accepted.

Yeah I also saw that FAQ. I know a couple of non Canadian internationals who are at Columbia! And my premed advisor (at Columbia undergrad lol) told me that they do interview and accept internationals so I’m keeping my hopes up! Would be a dream

There was a Chinese student who got into vps in 2018, but it was before they launch the scholarship program. For the past two years, only Canadians were accepted. But we will have to see for this year to know more.

If they have no intention of accepting non-Canadian international students, they should make it clear on their website. Isn't it unethical and fraudulent for them to grab international students' money? Not to mention the time and energy they spent in writing those long secondaries!
saying that in their website wouldn't make sense in terms of reputation for a top 10, ivy, and a nyc/global outreach university imo. It's hard to say we don't like internationals or the X type of candidate, doesn't sound right imo even if it is true. Many schools accept applications from internationals and interview 0...like USC,UChicago,Brown etc.. the MSAR never lies. Also, it would be useful when checking the MSAR to take into account that DACA are internationals and ALWAYS check the countries represented; so when a school says eg. we interviewed X internationals and Y matriculated and the only countries represented are US and Canada, then the internationals are DACA+Canadians

Yeahh based on the MSAR, Columbia doesn’t really take any non Canadian non DACA Internationals. So sad. It’s one of my fav schools, where I went for undergrad, where I did most of my research and where most of my letters of rec are from but I guess being international destroys all of that.

Perhaps the adcom doesn't care much about internationals because of the Vagelos-whatever name? scholarship program they have.
Good luck, wish you the best; but don't take personally if you don't get an II from them-I'm sure Columbia has many international pre-meds with similar experiences who might be in a similar position

Haha same, still hope to get some love from the alma mater

Yes I think that program is a big reason that shapes vps’s decision making.

And Mount Sinai. These schools should feel shameful for grabbing $100 from international applicants, sending them secondaries for them to spend hours writing beautifully written and thoughtful essays that tailored to the schools, only to throw their applications in trash cans.
To explicitly say "not to apply" is different from some historical data on MSAR.
SHAME SHAME SHAME

I know someone who got into Mt Sinai with a full ride last cycle and he’s international not Canadian. He didn’t matriculate there tho so doesnt appear on MSAR. It’s definitely rare

Does anyone know till when they would be sending interview invites?

and are they receptive to update letters without having interviewed?

If it’s worth anything I interviewed in dec and current students kept commenting on how it was fairly early in the interview cycle so I definitely don’t think January is far fetched!
how would it be early if the last interview date is jan 29?

where did you see this? I checked their website and all I saw is that interview invitations are sent till January but I think there might be some interviews in Feb no?

someone posted this earlier in the thread. from what people have said here it seems like they send out interview invites for an interview a few days/a week later? but if the last date is jan 29th then yes that seems not early

I believe last year the last interview was also end of January but yes someone said jan 29 earlier in this thread for this cycle.
