2021-2022 Hackensack Meridian

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
That’s amazing! Is their merit based on high MCAT score?
I am not sure but I read on past threads that it’s based on if you have other acceptances. Not sure how true this is considering I don’t even know how they would know about other acceptances.

This is because what you read is only half the story. They won't know about other acceptances unless you tell them. In response to being told, some people reported being offered scholarships to choose HMSOM. This does not mean others weren't offered money without asking. I'm sure some were. In addition, it was also reported that they pulled some sleazy crap and offered someone a scholarship in response to seeing they selected CTE at another school, which was meant to induce them into breaking a binding commitment elsewhere. The person turned them down.

Again, this is all in the past. This year, they are one year older, and are going to have a match under their belt before anyone has to make decisions. They are also maxing out the class size this year at around 160, up significantly from the first few years. Bottom line, no one knows what kind of budget they are going to have for scholarships this year, or how attractive they are going to be perceived without them, or how they are going to distribute whatever it is that they have to distribute, until it actually happens.

Speculation is certainly fun, and the past is all we have to look at right now, but it's worth remembering that the HMSOM of 2019 is not the HMSOM of 2022, and none of us is going to know what they are doing until they either tell us or show us.

I just went through the SDN thread for this year and wanted to share the information I collected because it could help calm some people down.

Stats:
There have been 20 A's posted on the thread
There are probably a little over 30 people in the accepted student Groupme (this information comes from a dm conversation I had with someone in the group me)
7 of the 20 people posting they received A's had A's from other MD schools and a few others were on WL.

I know this information isn't super helpful as some people don't go on SDN to report all their movement and news but to me it looks like a-lot more As are available. Interviews are going on till Mid-April and then based on previous years more A's will be given out then. If anyone has more information on how many A's, II or seats are left feel free to put it in here so we can try to solve the puzzle together.

Still holding out hope for the both of us 👊🏻

I should’ve but it’s too late now. I doubt an update this late would do anything.
Sent update in Oct, no response. Emailed in Dec, no response.
I agree with you, probably not reapplying to this school.

Yea so I interviewed Dec 29th, but people who interviewed early January got the call yesterday, no call today, and it seems like this is just a soft WL, am i right? LM 73.7 OOS ORM. man i thought the interview went well too, dang nabbit

Nope. They are slow and disorganized, but they have sent post-II Rs and WLs this cycle, so there really is no soft anything. They just haven't figured out what to do with you yet, and most likely haven't even brought you to the adcom yet, likely because they are still waiting for interview reports, or maybe because the people they need to discuss your file weren't available when they met.

I know that waiting is unnerving. SDN loves to view things linearly, but so little in this process seems to proceed along strict chronological lines, so I think you should resist the urge to come to a conclusion based on someone who interviewed a week after you receiving good news while you are still waiting. In my observation, when these guys have something to say, they will let you know.

I see. Thanks for ur advice, yea I think the urge to view this process linearly (proceeding along strict chronological lines) is something which I need to consciously override

Yup. Everyone does it, on every thread. I'm watching this for years now, and I just don't understand it. Especially with IIs. People always ask for stats and complete date, while the order of IIs being issued is always all over the place, with zero correlation to either.

With respect to this school, just look at prior year threads to put your mind at ease. You'll see people receiving all kinds of news after waiting various periods of time. Sure, as weeks turn into months, with tons of people receiving As while you are still waiting, things will start looking not so good, but you are nowhere near that yet after 7 weeks that includes a big holiday weekend.

You'll also see a ton of late WL movement here due to the school's place in our collective pecking order as a new unranked school. A TON of attrition as people are forced to drop As around 4/30. The biggest hurdle here, as at any other school, is getting the II. After that, their II -->A rate, either initially or off the WL, is pretty high. I would not write this school off post-II until I actually received a R. Good luck!!

@KnightDoc , I agree that the process isn't strictly linear, but over time as more and more people (especially January interviewees) who post As, the more likely it's going to be a WL or R. Even on past posts, there's a general tendency that the longer the wait the worse. However, this year it seems that the waits are longer than normal, so as hard as it is, we gotta wait it out.

On one hand, we do have a single data point that a January II turned into an A, but so far we only have one, so it's tough to say.

I just got the call from the Dean of admission but I missed the call. Does this mean an A or should I not get my hopes up.
it means u got the A; congratulations! However, I would try to call them back tomorrow.

AHHH CONGRATS! I got the call today also from the Dean of admission, and I also missed it 🙁 He left a voicemail saying he'd reach out again in a week and left no call back number. Did you get the same? I think I will reach out to admissions tomorrow! Hoping this is the A for us !!!

Hi I missed a call from Hackensack University (area code 551) but no voicemail was left behind. I tried to return the call but no one picked up :/ is this a positive call or just a fluke lol

I interviewed Jan 19 and have not heard back yet. Considering people have been getting calls can I assume I am waitlisted or rejected?
PS: Waitlisted people how did they inform you?

IS HMSOM still interviewing? I'm considering sending an update letter.

Was placed on hold here a few months back. Not sure if they take people off of Hold here.

update: I called the admissions office and the lady was confused as to why calls were being made yesterday as the admissions office was closed. she said there's no note on my file about a call so I'm trying not to keep my hopes up and I'm waiting to hear back from her 🙁

I hope you hear back, but it's a little comical that calls are being made from these numbers and upon calling back they don't go to the original caller.

yeah, the original number I missed a call from just keeps taking me back to the Hackensack Medical Center operator line. I wished they also emailed us in case we missed a call but it is what it is I guess

I'm thinking of sending a letter of intent post interview. I interviewed around 2 weeks ago, would it be too early to send?

It takes them a couple of weeks to add things to your file, so if you want to send one then send it sooner rather than later.

i sent out in Dec and silence. I got nothing, not even a confirmation. I followed up a week later and two weeks later.

N=1, but my experience has been a couple weeks. They may prioritize applicants depending on where they are in the admissions process pre-II, II, and post-II/decision (WL/A). Again, totally speculative, but this may be the case given the reported response times on this thread from people at various stages in Hackensack's process.

Happened to me with another school. I have T-mobile which is hotdog water level quality and the phone call basically stopped ringing and cut off. Ended up getting my first acceptance call in my voicemail while I was TAing the class, which kind of sucks haha. When I called back it routed me to their medical records dept (???)

I also received a call on Wednesday 2/16 from (551) area code. I called back, but it went to the Hackensack Medical Center. I am hoping it is positive news about my application, however, I have been on hold since November. Do you think they would be offering interviews by phone? Is this just an unfortunate coincidence?

did you have a voicemail left behind or just a missed phone call?

No voicemail. Just a missed call. The caller ID said HackensackUMC. Technically, there was a voicemail but it was 1 sec long of them hanging up.

ok that was the same for me (no voicemail). the admissions lady I spoke to said we should have received a voicemail if it was an acceptance call so I'm not sure what to think of this 🙁

Does any current student know if there is a date already scheduled for the 2022 white coat ceremony?

I asked this in another thread for a different school but was wondering if anybody had any thoughts on the expansion to 150+ students. As somebody who is not from NJ and thus unfamiliar with the reach of HMH, will there be enough clinical opportunities and residency options, given that Rutgers students already rotate at some of the hospitals.

Finally, do any current students have an idea of how the first match will go?

I don't see an issue with clinical experiences or research experiences with the expansion. It's my understanding that Rutgers students don't rotate with us (granted I'm only on clerkship #2) the only other students I've seen are SGU students and there has been less this year as compared to previous years.

Everyone is optimistic about the first match but we will all find out together on match day.

Edit: I was incorrect about Rutgers students, they do have rotations at HUMC.
