Was wondering if any current students could speak on this topic- What is the student culture like on the chicago campus? Is it homely and easy to make friends or leans a bit more that people stick to friends they maybe met in undergrad etc because it's an in-state dominated school? As an OOS student I was just wondering if adjustment would be easy considering I've heard so much about the importance of a support system throughout med school

Very collaborative and easy to make friends if you’re involved and present. There are a lot of people with the same undergrad in college but many were not at that institution at the same time or did not know them if they were there at the same time. Colleges are huge and the Chicago classes are large. If you’re involved you can make connections with upperclassmen, too.

I would say this depends on your style. I personally just stuck with a tablet/laptop duo like a Surface, and I have several classmates that stuck with a similar kind of setup the entire way through pre-clinical. I also have classmates who went both tablet and laptop, or just a laptop. I can't tell you the exact iPad models, but I have seen plenty of those in use as well.

If you are planning on using financial aid money to purchase it, you will want to review the guidelines and procedures for the Budget Adjustment forms (linked) they have available for Laptop/Tablet purchases. I believe you can only get an adjustment for one or the other, but you'll absolutely want to verify with financial aid about that. Things change through the years.

Keep in mind if you use your budget adjustment for the computer/tablet in the fall, the money will be disbursed in two separate semesters (Fall & Spring). It's how the financial aid system works, I guess. Caught me off guard when I found out about that little catch lol.

does any one have any advice for the interview? I applied through EDP so have a chance of being interviewed in late August, just want to be prepared in case. Thanks

From my personal experience- I would make sure to do some good research for the MMI Portion. Reference the sdn uic interview page and the questions previous students got, and research some of the topics. For example, my MMI questions involved things like ethics, different types of health insurances, etc. which require some background knowledge to answer. Besides that, participate whenever you can during the group portion of the interview and speak genuinely about what you've learned from research and clinical experiences, not just explaining the experience itself, and how UIC's resources (their website has a ton of info about different tracks, clubs, programs and the 3 campuses), will help you further your end goal of what you hope to achieve as a physician during the 1 on 1 portion. The interviewers were also really kind and understanding.
