2024-2025 Maryland

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
felt this ngl… me and my friend applied , I got in she did not , I swear she had a way better app than me 😭 it’s honestly kinda random . I applied later than her too in August
I have applied 4 straight cycles without an II. 520 MCAT and 3.96 sGPA, and 1000s of hours of experiences. I even did their undergrad research internship (NSIP) which they say gives you a good chance of getting in. Haters be hating.

I now have 10 IIs this cycle, one of them to a top 5. I can’t do anything to convince them to interview me 😭

Complete opposite for me - I'm OOS and got zero love from my state school despite being far above their median mcat, but somehow got an II at Maryland. The process is truly quite random and unfair at times.
Interesting … I’m curious to your state? I wonder how other states compare to Maryland. Congrats tho. I think when someone can get a full ride at other schools/some scholarships and not an interview at their state school…I find it interesting I know two personal stories just me, of course there are so many experiences…

tbh the dedication of applicants goes crazy. UMSOM does not meet with those rejected :/ I get it that there are a lot of applicants but we pay a lot of money. I would like to change the efforts medical schools put into their applicants. They should at least provide wellness resrouces !! or maybe allow some current students to get connected to reapplicants if they value their applicants the dedication they have to being a physician. It is very hard /mentally draining waiting on a decision for a year in some cases if you are put on a waitlist ...

Congrats!!!! I also interviewed early December so I'm praying I hear back within the next few days. If not then it's likely an R for me
You never know. This process feels so random. I’m pretty sure there was someone who interviewed in November who just heard back this week.

Even though my home state has double the population of Maryland, maybe around 40-45% of the student body is OOS which makes it very difficult for in-state people to get in. Compare this with Maryland where in-state people get the advantage that they deserve to have at their only public med school.

When certain states have in-state biases and multiple schools, my question is becoming a doctor 'easier' in other states, the process is hard regardless, but are there factors that make it more challenging... this is something I would like AMCAS to release and look into more.

Also another question, if a medical school wants a balance of diversity, do they not accept people from certain backgrounds or experiences so they can achieve this said balance of groups. If so, is it ethical to deny an applicant on that basis if they already admitted enough of a certain background. Even later in the cycle when they are picking apps to revisit and interview.

These questions are hard to answer without more information from amcas or adcoms being more transparent with their process and record keeping.

Are you also OOS by any chance? Maybe they're saving us for a later committee review date after they give out all the berths to the IS people
i am OOS with ginormous ties to the state of MD

Is UMD done with interviews now? Or are they still sending IIs?

Finally got the call! +1 OOS A, interviewed first week of December.

Nothing in the portal and no email yet, so I'm still not too sure if the acceptance is official. Did anyone else have to wait a few more days before the portal was fully updated?
Portal wasn't updated until 2 days later for me

its super random. a lot of people don't even get one interview so it's difficult to "expect" anything with this process.
Agreed. This process is truly a lottery. I've been working at UMSOM for over 2 years in both clinical and bench research. Half of my LORS are from Maryland faculty. One from the literal chair of the department I work at. Only caveat is that I've been an MD resident for 3ish years as I moved from CA after undergrad. My stats are within their ranges and I still haven't heard from them, yet got interviews at places I have no ties to.

I wouldn't try to make sense out of their decisions or allow them to reflect on you as an individual. Like any school, Maryland has it's pros and cons and honestly any MD A is a HUGE accomplishment.

+1 IS Pre-II R (only live here for a postbac tho, so p weak connection)
(Secondary submitted 6/30 lol)

🚨HATER ALERT🚨

IS Pre-II R. Complete hella early.

The 4th cycle in a row I have been rejected pre-II from my in state school. If that doesn’t scream hater idk what does. But you know what it is, they don’t deserve me anyway 😎
Congrats! 4th time reapplying is crazyyy.

If you don't mind can you share some things you've done differently this cycle? You seem to have a really good cycle result already.

UMSOM is not it sometimes, honestly, and for real. Better luck with private schools. Saw you apply ED UMSOM does not like ED applicants as much as other schools unfortunately they don't value that type of dedication 🤣... it's like giving your all to someone who does not care lolol.

Yeah I wish I had known they didn't like ED before I applied last cycle. Everything happened the way it's supposed to tho

Seems like they are sending out rejections...we see those that they reject and just know those who really tried with their app and who poured so much into their app its not you...it's t h e m.

They should tell us flat out if it is due to space limitations or if there really is a 'great enough weakness' in our app (and then do a lottery system with apps that they are all fine with admitting).

In their rejection letter, they say the reason is confidential. If something is confidential it seems sus and means they cannot even explain their reasoning...it should be confidential to other applicants but not your own application that you have given them.

In their waitlist letters, they mention they would be fine admitting everyone on the waitlist and that there is just space issues and if that is the case they must subjectively pull out an applicant based on whoever is reviewing it which is technically not a fair system. And the ranking is illogical too if they mention they would be fine taking anyone on that list just do a lottery system based on who expressed interest to remain on that waitlist. Like how are you ranking but they do not explain.

I emailed the dean directly the past 2 years and I got a response both times. The first time she said I needed more non-clinical volunteering, and that the non-profit organization I created didn't count because I started it when I was 11, and stuff before college doesn't count (even though I continued it through college). The second time she basically told me I was a sociopath LMAO. Said that they "look for humanism in our applicants". Still makes me crack up

I loved "the admissions committee has asked me to express to you its sincere and deep regret that it is unable to offer you admission...". Like DRAMATIC just say you can't offer me admission lmao if your regret was that deep you would've at least extended me an interview 🤣

wow...you legit started it when you were 11 like you have deep commitment to your community

I am rooting for you. When you are older please help change the system and make it as fair as possible. We will not be silenced ...

Heard a couple of people talking about how it seemed like way more OOS applicants were getting interviews and acceptances. I think it's just sampling bias. I don't think this thread gives us an accurate picture of how the class is structured right now. In previous years, they published class profiles (although I think they removed them from their website, you can still access them through the Wayback Machine). Those profiles showed Maryland accepted around 80% IS students pretty consistently year after year. A 20% OOS acceptance rate is definitely considered OOS-friendly, but it's not extreme, in my opinion.
That being said, this process is extremely exhausting. This is my first cycle, and I can say for certain it made 2024 the worst year of my life😭. And seeing some of my friends not get in, despite all of us working so hard, is really heartbreaking and confusing. All we can do is keep pushing forward and supporting each other.

In previous years, they published class profiles (although I think they removed them from their website, you can still access them through the Wayback Machine). 30 % is a lot lolol idk why they took it down , again less transparency. but I think half of their interviews they give to out of staters and half in state. I do they they should extend more interviewers invites to their in staters, each school has a certain capacity they can interview. They shouldn’t even be ‘friendly’ I heard they get more tuition lolol for one but we don’t know any of their reasoning unless they are more transparent. But we got this if not UMSOM will we flourish in other states

Yeah, I get that haha, but you have to look at it in proportion to the applicant pool. About 250 interviews are given to the 5,000+ OOS applicants, while another 250 are given to the 1,000 IS applicants. While that is technically "half," it still heavily favors in-state applicants. Even after interviews, IS applicants are much more likely to receive acceptances. Post-interview acceptance rates are like 70% for IS compared to 45% for OOS. I’d like to think they’re working to improve the process. From what I’ve heard from the admissions committee, they do seem to understand how tough this process is. They even increased the class size to around 170–180 this year.

Tbh tho, so much of this application process is luck-based. if someone on the admissions committee had some bad fish the day they came across your application, you might be screwed🤷‍♂️. There needs to be some serious reform to this process nationwide, cus we're in a doctor shortage, but the barrier to entry has only increased🫤
