Just a question about the TMDSAS match process in general: I found some Google Sheets reporting admission data from previous cycles on acceptances vs matriculants. For instance, in 2021 McGovern had 4247 IS applicants, 861 IS IIs, 377 IS acceptances, and 229 IS enrollments. In another dataset, McGovern had 445 IS acceptances and 228 IS enrollments. What constitutes an "in-state acceptance"? Does it include prematch offers and match offers on match day? We only match to 1 school on match day, so in what circumstances does one match to a school and not attend, other than receiving a pre-match? I suppose my questions can be summarized as: do schools match more applicants than they have seats for on match day?

Lots of factors
-some applicants get several prematches but only can Match to 1 place. That alone could account for a couple hundred “extra “ offers
-Match Day sorts that out
-After Match Day some will leave Texas for other states, filling in those blanks counts as more admissions offers
-Some people can’t start school this year for a variety of reasons, filling in those blanks counts as more admissions offers

Gotcha! So matches made on match day only account for some of the IS acceptances applicants have reported? And the last two scenarios on your list of factors would be post-match-day acceptances made on a rolling basis?

Yes. And most schools don’t give a number of prematches equal to their class size so the rest go out on Match Day

Hi, if there are any current McGovern students here I have some questions:

-Are there internal rankings maintained throughout the preclinical period? If so, is that info released to residencies when applying or only used internally?

-During the preclinical years, approximately how many days of the week are there mandatory in-person sessions?

-Is lecture attendance optional and are they recorded?

Thanks so much for your time!

1st year student here!

1. 1st semester is True P/F with no rankings assigned. After the first semester, I am not 100% sure, but as far as I am aware, McGovern does not officially internally rank. However, if you are interested in getting AOA, they do look at grades for both pre-clinical and clinical years (so I guess, in a way, there must be some kind of internal ranking). I believe there is no sort of internal ranking released to residencies (again could be wrong here).

Edit: Got some clarity from other students regarding this question. There is no official internal ranking but upon applying to residency, McGovern does list your grades on the committee letter they write about you for residency. They also list a distribution of the class grades showing where you roughly fall amongst the rest of the class.

2. During the pre-clinical years, there are a decent number of mandatory events. On a given week it is usually twice a week. The first semester is anatomy twice a week + other required sessions (skills, OSCEs, etc.). The second semester onwards is PBL twice a week + other required sessions (skills, preceptorship, etc.). I will say that the first semester definitely has more in-person components compared to afterward.

3. Lecture attendance, for the most part, is optional, and they are recorded.
