2024-2025 Pittsburgh

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Damn, I'm trying to remain calm and level-headed during this process, but screw this school lol.

I just logged into my portal to check something and saw: "In these very competitive times, it becomes increasingly difficult for us to choose the best among the outstanding people who submit applications to us. The University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine has decided not to extend an interview to you in this application year."

No email or anything. Complete 7/18.
+1, oh well, we move forward

same R. Honestly with the money we pay for the secondary, an automated courtesy email is not an unreasonable expectation, and unfortunately some schools still don't do that.

Hey guys! I am a current M4 at Pitt! Just submitted ERAS, which reminded me how bad med school apps were when I applied. Now that I have a ton of free time I am more than happy to answer questions about Pitt Med and Pittsburgh. I won't be a ton of help with pre-clinical stuff since the curriculum changed when I started M3 but can answer as much as I can!

did it say it on the portal? Like does it say your application will not be extended an interview? I’ve been checking my portal daily cause of this thread and mine just says I’m complete
Yes it says something like that. It is very clear and if your application says complete you have not gotten an R

This might be a bit neurotic, but does it mean anything if the status says “complete and under review”? Or is that just the default status after being complete?

Pitt is one of the schools where applying early in the cycle matters. Applying now puts you at a disadvantage. There are likely other places to apply at this point that give you a better chance of acceptance.

such as?

I think non-rolling schools like Harvard and Yale are some, not sure about others. Maybe helpful to look at school’s individual threads to get a sense of where they are in their cycle too (depending if the school is going in order tho)

Is it too early to send an update here? not sure if they even consider pre-II updates

But if we get an A from Pitt, we will have to consider it, right? Unless we get so lucky that we manage to snag multiple A's!
Like i said, I am a current 4th year student. That post was over dramatic to say the least. Is Pitt perfect? No, of course not. Although it is a top 20 medical school with world class researchers and physician mentors. We have year over year one of the best match lists in the country. Also opportunities you ay get no where else. And every single problem mention, while overblown, is an issue at every school in the country. I know the person who wrote that post and can confirm its almost entirely unfounded. So my advice is not to pay attention to it.

Twas a joke for the 98% of applicants who are unable to get an offer LOL

I really can't believe it. If it helps I suspect apps are sorted based on certain themes. I am a nontrad and did Americorps and I have a feeling apps with this are viewed within their own pile?

Also, my friend who's now attending Stanford interviewed past December (I think, not sure exactly when but it was def later), I really don't think timing means much as a traditional applicant. You all worked very hard, I would be blessed to be in your shoes and not applying a few years later. I'm hoping my news means similar things are coming your way <3

that's really kind of you to say. Congrats on your II and best of luck 🙂

Does anyone know if the student interviews are conducted by M1s or is it random?
I had an M2 MD/PhD for my regular MD interviewed. I think they switch over to M1 interviewers eventually though (they explained their formalized process in one of the information sessions I think).
