Does anyone know what the standard one way interview is like? Is it similar to UTMBs or can you look at the questions ahead of time?

Yes feeling very blessed and also confused lmao. I don't have a crazy life story, or ties to SA, but I am fresh out of Americorps so maybe that's the reason? Really wasn't expecting anything from long since my GPA is lower (3.7)

You earned it for your entire application! Do not let neurotic applicants such as that make you feel like you got in only for x reason and nothing else. Good luck on your interview

Just wanted to reiterate this point here ^. I'm current student at Long who is also an interviewer. There aren't any "gotcha" questions and we pride ourselves on our welcoming/friendly atmosphere! The interview is just a way for us to get to know you better.

Also re: the interview format - we have two 1-on-1 interviews that are about 20 mins each. One is usually with a faculty member and the other is with a current student.

If anyone has any specific questions about life at Long I'd be happy to answer them!
hi! I wanted to confirm, are the 1-on-1 interviews traditional questions? no mmi?

+1 IS II 🙂 LM 75, I have some ties to SA, feeling so blessed! I love SA and have always wanted to return there for my career.
Primary submitted 05/31, "Long Has Your App" email on 7/8.

Hi! I was wondering how stressful preclinical is considering it is not P/F?

+1 OOS II, no ties to SA, submitted primary 07/08, they received my complete app on 08/22

Hi! I was wondering how stressful preclinical is considering it is not P/F?
I’m an MS2 and I hope I can help with an answer. I’ve honored most of my classes — I say this not to boast, but to add some perspective.

There are times where I would love if it was P/F, and that’s generally a few days before the test. I’m a worrywart though, so that may just come with how I normally approach life. There are a good number of classes where the majority of the class honors. I’m talking anywhere between 50-90%. I think there have been only a handful of classes - maybe two or three thus far - that have had less than 1% fail. Most of the time, there aren’t those who fail. The classes are definitely designed that if you’re doing the work every week, you will do well. They give you resources such as Sketchy to help you. The upperclassmen also want to see you do well, and the school helps organize tutoring for anyone who asks free of charge. You get an entire week off before the final exam to study and prepare. I think it’s neat that they reward your discipline. Never be afraid to ask for help.

In summary, I don’t really think about it too much until the days leading up to the final. My pursuit of honors in my class are to make sure I have an easier time for step later… and to feel good when I open up the canvas page and see I did well on the exam 😄 I go for honors for me and no one else.

For anyone traveling to San Antonio for the interview and looking for somewhere cheaper than hotels to stay for a night or two, let me know 🙂

Hi! I was wondering how stressful preclinical is considering it is not P/F?

Sorry for the late reply - currently going through residency interviews.

A lot of applicants might be worried about our "graded" pre-clinical and how it might be more stressful than a true p/f, but I will give you a perspective in addition to the MS2 above. I believe our pre-clinical can be as stressful as you want to make it. I was able to honor every module, but I did put in a lot of work to do so. While a lot of residency programs don't necessarily care about your preclinical grades, they do factor into class rank + who is eligible for AOA which do have some impact when applying to residency.

If your goal is to match a primary care specialty, then perhaps gunning for all honors isn't really worth it. Similar to the MS2 above's experience, I found that a lot of my classmates were able to honor the preclinical modules too (generally 40-60% honor, there was only 1 class where below 30% honored). The school does not curve or cap who can honor. Generally speaking, my classmates were extremely willing to help others out if you needed it (sharing tips, study methods, anki decks, etc.). So in that sense, I felt that people who put in the effort were able to do well on the exams.

That said, the H/HP/P/F preclinical does have some benefits, too. Since Step 1 went P/F, I believe the number of students failing has actually risen. Since I studied for each module to get honors, studying for Step 1 was relatively easy. I was able to pass the CBSE (practice Step 1 our school makes us take in October of MS2) with 2 classes left to take in the preclinical module. My dedicated study period for Step 1 was also only a week long.

IMO, medical school will be difficult no matter where you go and I wouldn't use the grading/curriculum as a factor when deciding between schools unless other major factors (e.g. cost, location) are equivalent.

Does anyone know when UTSA plans to send acceptances to OOS students? I can’t find information anywhere on the Internet

At the earliest, sometime this month - someone on the Republic of Texas thread said that they do committee meetings once a month and send out a handful of acceptances with them. I do not know the specific dates, but for this month we have a little over a week to work with!

Any prematch so far? this time last year we heard some prematch.
