Just an MS1 popping in to say I know it’s very anxiety inducing thinking they take preview day into account I was nervous about that, but I can assure you they do not at all. There are far to many students in attendance to track who attends, how the conduct themselves, etc. student ambassadors don’t know who’s on the admission committee or who even makes these decisions. I think they tend to send prematches on Friday but this is not related to preview days also being on Friday. Y’all are so close to match day, you got this! Try to relax and enjoy your preview day if you plan to attend. Look at the people around you- those could be your future classmates which IMO matters! These are the people you’ll be in the trenches of med school with! I’m always happy to answer UTMB questions if you have them.
 
It has been said multiple times that attending preview days has no bearing on prematching. The pattern you’re nothing probably has more to do with it being Friday than there being a true correlation between preview days and prematches.

Confounding variables and all that.

Have any OOS ppl heard back? I saw like maybe 1-2? I know they take very few🙁 but just wondering
 
I feel so bad in skipping the preview day too. but as everyone said that it does not much have impact, so just keeping fingers crossed and praying.

this is the most tense time for us waiting and waiting. need prayers and good vibes from everyone.
 
Keep in mind- OOS acceptances are limited to 10 percent of the class max (23 ppl). Our current MS 1 class j want to say is only 6 percent OOS. UTMB is big on growing physicians that will serve Texas, sometimes the OOS boat moves slow here.

Do they only send out 23 offers. Or do they offer more knowing only few OOS would come to UTMB. I saw on an SDN page that they sent out 43 acceptances to OOS but I’m not too certain on that. I did send an intent letter last week so hopefully that helps show my interest to stay in Texas.

so UTMB sends out around 23-36 spots to OOS ?. Yea lmao i keeping checking sdn and admit.org. Someone did get rejected (pre-invite) but not sure how that plays out w other decisions for today.

I not sure how many offers they send to OOS, I just know they take a lot of in state students. From meeting my OOS classmates several of them have strong ties to Texas- Spouses working here, grew up in state, ETC. obviously that is not a complete analysis, just passing along what I have learned from my classmates.
 
How many OOS applicatants w invites have heard back - if you did - please reply to this!!

Yea. I tried to get instate residency when I came back for undergrad . Didn’t work out unfortunately.
 
Don't want to sound like a broken record here, but is a prematch still possible next Friday (as this seems to be the day of choice w/ UTMB)? Falls on Jan 31st, so was just wondering.

There is no way to know this and our Texas Match Day is coming up on Feb 14. I think that will be a major day for OOS applicants to get any admissions offers too.
If you don’t get an offer on Feb 14 keep watching your email to see if you are invited to be on their WL

Hi, if there's any current UTMB students, would love your input to the below questions. I pre-matched to both UTMB and McGovern and trying to weigh each:
1. Could you share your views on the pros and cons of UTMB and your experience there?
2. Any pros and cons to living in Galveston?
3. Does UTMB records all lectures, and if so, how does it make them available to students?
4. I know UTMB is P/F in pre-clinical. How does that impact the competitiveness/collaboration of the students?
5. Since it is P/F, what factors go into being selected for AOA?
Feel free to DM me if that is preferred. And, much thanks in advance for any insights you are willing to share.

Will type up a longer response to 1 when I’m back at my computer. For the rest:
2. I live off island so I have no clue, but can answer questions about off island living 🙂
3. No. Most lectures are not recorded. We have minimal lectures to begin with, and many of them are required attendance. Once in a blue moon they will record and put on Blackboard but this is rare.
4. None of us really have a non-P/F experience to compare this to, but I will say it is largely very collaborative here. I’ve run into my fair share of true gunner behavior (i.e. active sabotage not just being a tryhard), but it is rare.
5. Only preclerkship is P/F. We have H/HP/P for MS3. No junior AOA, only senior. See also: AOA Member Selection Criteria
 
I can also reply to those questions as a current MS1. I'm a yapper so this might be long, sorry in advance haha

1. I can say I think UTMB allows for awesome school-life balance. for me personally, the P/F is good for my stress, mental health, and relationships with my friends and family. IMO culture is what differentiates UTMB. Our class is very collaborative, I don't sense any 'competitive' nature at all between my classmates and I and that makes medical school enjoyable. My experience has been awesome, I would chose UTMB again a million times.

2. I live on island, short walk to campus so I can speak to that. Personally, I commuted to work for several years during my gap years and I do not like driving distances. Also, there seems to be construction always happening along I45, so I don't like the unpredictable nature of that. That being said, I have several friends who live off island and they love it. It's really up to your personal preference. I like being able to leave my house 15 minutes before class starts and not having the stress of parking, etc. Other pros to island life- theres a lot of things to do around the city, many of my friends are within a 5-7 minute drive, can easily get to campus for meetings/ org meetings/ go home for lunch and come back easily. Cons to island life- many historic homes, which can be unpredictable. Apartment options aren't the absolute closest to campus. It floods temporarily when we get heavy rain. No trader joes.

3. Most of our learning is done in small groups and team based learning. I would say in MS1 we have about 1-2 additional optional 1 hour lectures weekly. My experience has been that the vast majority of these are recorded, except for the mandatory ones which are very limited. Currently we have 2 mandatory 2 hour lectures in an 8 week class. I learn best from the 3rd party resources anyway so I love this personally. IMO, 3rd parties get to the point of what you need to know for step, make the material understandable, and give memory tools in a much shorter time input than a lecture would. More efficient.

4. For the current class of 2028, I sense not a single ounce of competitiveness, like literally none. (this is my personal experiences though). If you need a more competitive environment (no judgement), honestly I would consider you may not get that here. My class seems to be very laid back. We share notes every week. We share opportunities. We socialize. All the things.

5. The above answer hit AOA and I have nothing to add!

Yes, wait until Match Day and then you’ll receive official communication inviting you. It’s more of a “committed students chat” so we’re capturing more of the people who actually plan to attend lol

anyone know of good apartments in the area? was bored and thinking of driving down from houston to check out which places in the area are good. know next to nothing about the galveston area lol.

any recommendations? looking for something close by where many other UTMB students may be living.

Check out the new Cove at GYB. Walking distance, brand new, great amenities.
 
Lots of students live at Villas on the Strand and Oleanders. Cove is brand new as the person above said. I would recommend waiting until after match. People will start talking y a lot about housing and older students will begin posting who has open rooms in their house. Many ppl live in houses close to campus
