2024-2025 Wake Forest

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I wonder whether medical schools tend to auto WL applicants from the school's undergrad as as a soft rejection? I know a few fellow WL warriors from home who went to this school (I did not) and this is what they think happens a lot.

Chat is there any hope left?
i know this may not help, but I just got my first acceptance this late into the cycle today. I am a trad app and didn't have anything specifically popping off my app. Ik nothing is promised, but don't give up hope, especially if you are on the waitlist.

Bruh I'm switching careers at this point
Same here. No way can I expend the financial and time resources to play this high stakes game again, not to mention the emotional toll it's had. This was my one shot so barring a surprise accept now to mid-June I’m done.

Not sure why everyone's lost hope. Of course prep for a reapp if this is the only WL you're counting on. Wake last year offered spots to WL applicants all throughout May and the first week or so in June. Fingers crossed for next week 🤞

The total incoming class size for Winston-Salem is always 145, right? If they actually did still have a bunch of spots open than am not sure why they iwould drag out acceptances like this.

Perhaps somebody can contact the admissions office to inquire about how much WL movement to expect? And yeah it's a fairly consistent number each year.

They just say that the WL can move between now and into June basically. They also don't pick up the phone really. Congrat's on the accept btw!

So I have an acceptance to a DO school that was #8 on my list, with two Waitlists (my #1 and #2 school). At what point do I have to find housing? I don't understand how no one has considered requiring all class rosters to be finalized by like early May. Surely med schools don't REALLY need like 5 months for interviews, right?

Wonder what's with the gap in numbers between the facebook group and the Winston-Salem GroupMe chats, and which is more representative of spots left.
Probably neither. I’ve been accepted since October and I don’t use Facebook and am
Not on the GroupMe. I am sure others like me are out there too.

Congrats! Exactly re people who don't use either. I would be one of them too if I had been accepted. It is definitely possible they're about full or totally full and just waiting now so I wish they would cut people loose that they know they won't want as a replacement if someone with an accept ends not there at this point. I don't even know if I could afford, or be able to manage, a last minute relocation anyway if I got a call after the orientation date.

thank you…. Getting an acceptance on the first day was certainly a huge relief and gave me plenty of time to plan to get down here, which included selling and buying houses. Nonetheless, it was still an exhausting process, much like most other aspects of trying to get into medical school. If given the opportunity, I’m sure you’ll figure out a way to make it happen… you owe that to yourself. Good luck.

I'm rooting for all of you! If you have any questions about Wake or Winston-Salem, let me know! I'm a local who knows a lot of current medical students and a lot about the school, curriculum, facilities, etc. It's a wonderful place 🙂

Anyone who got merit scholarships know if they renew? I emailed financial aid but just curious if anyone else did and got an answer already!

somebody here said it’s a year by year process. Post 582.
Thank you!

I wish I could find out how likely it is to continue to get scholarships each year. 😔 Without the merit scholarships the COA is too high comparatively to another school.

Do they email you separately regarding merit scholarships?

And the Dean's Excellence Scholarship, from speaking with Financial Aid and other Wake students, is NOT really based on MCAT/GPA. All award winners have been notified, but Financial Aid told me that they continue to award them into May as people consider other options. I have spoken with several award winners, and they have unique cultural backgrounds and identities that add diversity to Wake's class, which is by and far predominantly white. Diversity/unique background is a criteria to be considered for this full-ride scholarship (full tuition + $40,000 extra). One award winner from past years (African-American) who I know had applied ED to Wake Forest and was a Wake undergrad, but still got the scholarship even though they were already committed to Wake and had no other options/leverage. Hence, this full-ride is NOT achieved via negotiation nor intended to attract high-stat ORMs to this school. Posting this for current applicants still waiting to hear back.

Full Disclaimer: I am from Winston-Salem, went to Wake Forest, am a high-stat ORM and got zero merit aid from Wake.

Are you able to get this as a M2 if you didn't as M1?

No you cannot unfortunately. They are awarded only prior to matriculation and renewable for three more years based on good academic standing and character. Wake and Financial Aid are intentionally vague about a lot of this, but this really is a DEI-driven scholarship that most people straight off the bat will never be under consideration for. More likely than not, a lot of the students awarded this scholarship would have gotten significant aid regardless (primarily need-based) due to coming from more disadvantaged backgrounds. Nevertheless, the people I know who got this award truly do have incredible life stories and they add a lot to Wake.

I am hearing a lot of things about the cost of this medical school lately that are making it easier to not be as sad that I am stuck on the waitlist.

I guess congrats are in order since you must have gotten the A to a school that you preferred👍🏻I know you have been going through the process for a long time since I recognize your name!
Haha yes! It was a crazy and active cycle. I had a lot of ups and downs but am basically close to committing. Im accepted at a school that is a great fit for me that I’m incredibly excited to attend. It might not be a top 50 but it’s a strong MD program that feels like a perfect fit for me. While Wake is amazing it just didn’t feel that way and I know someone else will get to go in my place and really love their experience. Best of luck to everyone still on the WL!
