I was at camp at the time it came out last year. I literally left camp for a few hours after the campers went to bed to start filling it out at Mcdonalds! 😛 It was a big deal for me to finally be applying to vet school! Of course, I won't submit it until the end of September since I will have more experiences and hours to add up until the application is due.

Yes, but it's one of those things. I graduated in 2011 - this next group of people won't graduate until 2017. That's a huge difference.
Like realizing that the Matrix was made 12 years ago....

A lot of the schools have you re-enter specific classes for their supplemental. Or maybe it was just Missouri. Haha. You'll also have to enter courses if you apply to Tufts since they don't use VMCAS. However, if you've applied to Tufts previously, it saves most of your application. That was a nice surprise.

Well said! 😀 I spent all day on it after my classes were over, but I've completed everything on the VMCAS except my evaluators, personal statement, any summer experience/course grades that I can't add yet, and any minor changes I want to make. It was totally worth it because now I can forget about it to focus on other things, the worst part is over, and I won't be stressed trying to complete it right before the deadline! It helped to have that saved copy of my last year's application that I could copy and paste from. 😛Heck yes it's a big deal to be applying!!!

I recommend filling out whatever you can now (or sometime soon) for anyone applying this cycle. It's going to take a while to fill everything in, so don't keep putting it off until last minute!

It's only the first day. 😛 Maybe you will be motivated tomorrow? I would take advantage of whenever you next feel motivated to get as much as you can done because you never know when you will be motivated again. 😉 I'll admit I gave up after filling in my grades. I took a break to watch my roommates play video games, fall sleep, and then eat lots of cake batter ice cream. After that, I was more motivated to add my experiences, and so I did.
Tell yourself that you will go out to eat at your favorite restaurant if you complete most of the application within the next few days! 😀 Better yet, buy cake batter ice cream as a reward!

I spent the last few months thinking I would obsess the moment the application opened (I mean, I started writing my PS in January
). After I got home from work yesterday and checked it out, I barely filled out any of it. Maybe I was just too mentally tired from work. Whatever the reason, I had that moment of "I've got til October."Hopefully, though, this doesn't mean that, come September, I'll have a moment of "oh crap, that thing is due soon..."

Yeah, my plan is to just work on it very slowly and take advantage of when I'm feeling motivated. It is pretty irritating to fill out, so if I don't start early and do it bit by bit I'm just going to end up really stressed and irritated.
Now I've decided I should work on my PS for real. I really want to have someone read it soon so I can find out if I need to totally re-vamp it or not. I did love that I opened it up and realized not only had I written a lot, but there were a lot of good ideas in there!

If you have the fire under your arse to get it done, by all means, do it! Just don't stress out about it. You will spend more time finding eLORs and writing your PS than filling out the app (I know you personally already know this, but for other 1st time applicants...)
Also, I was just thinking about this and thought I would offer a suggestion. Someone this past cycle started a discussion about eLORs when they found out one of their eLORs didn't turn out so hot. I remember seeing the advice to approach your eLORs asking if they will write you a POSITIVE letter. Not just a letter.
If you ask them to write you a letter and they say yes, then they are doing exactly what you asked, whether they have nice things to say or not.
If you ask them for a positive eLOR, it allows them to say "no I'm not comfortable writing that". Obviously someone can still tell you yes and write a less-than-positive eLOR but I just thought it was a good suggestion to pass on.
Edit: and please don't panic and think "OMG I never thought that could happen, now I'm really scared it will happen to me, how do I know they will write me a good one if I waive my right to see it, what if I did something one time that they saw through the window that they judged me on, or heard me say **** once, or that one time I kissed a dog and they think I am in vet med to get kinky with animals, and why does my linguine have a penne noodle in it, why is my thumb itchy?!!??!!?😱😱😱😱😱😱😱"

Perhaps, but just because you graduate in a certain year says nothing about your age really. I am non-trad just finished my first year of vet school and much older then everyone in my class. I graduated college in 2003. I am old.

Yes, tons of practice problems - as well as explanations for how to approach certain types of problems.
They also have 2 or 3 full length practice tests at the end of the book. If you've got ~$23, I'd highly recommend that book.

I think my point is that seeing the dates makes it real to me. And I'm not saying I'm old or anything, just that I FEEL that way when I see the dates. Like class of 2017.

I never talk to any of my professors and have only met with my advisor about five times. I guess I could ask my advisor to write one, and hope that she talks about my overall academic record, but she can't say anything about me as a person. I think I'm screwed.

I suggest seeing if you can schedule a meeting with either your advisor or a professor you might be interested in having write the LOR to just talk about everything. This will allow them an opportunity to get to know you. I know I asked a professor of mine for a LOR for an internship and he wanted to sit down and have a meeting with me to find out what I like to do in my free time, my interests, etc since I had only had him for a semester. He did this for a friend of mine who he'd taught for longer than a semester as well. Personally, I think meetings like that are a great idea.

I'm applying with a mediocre GPA (3.4... though all of the pre-reqs I've taken in the past year have been 4.0s, so at least my recent work is good?), strong GRE (98% below verbal, 91% below math), something like 10,000 hours of SA vet experience, 700 hours animal experience (split between shelter, zoo, and research), lots of other community/extracurricular activities. I'm a little bit tempted to quit my SA tech job and find a LA vet to shadow, but that would probably be easier if I didn't live in a city. 😉
Right now I'm thinking that I'll apply to Wisconsin, MSU, Minnesota, KSU, CSU, Penn, UTK, Mizzou. I rethink the list daily.
I have strong Type A tendencies, so VMCAS is filled out except for two eLORs and the PS. I went ahead and entered my summer classes as though I've already earned As in them. 🙂 I'll ask the two vets I want to write for me if they'll agree to it this week. The PS I wrote for my 2007 application is quite good; right now I'm trying to decide whether to use it with some modifications or start afresh. I've sent GRE scores to half of the schools currently on my list, and have the form filled out for the remaining four for when I decide to go ahead and apply to them... copies of transcripts have been requested... Wow Twisted rose, and I thought I was a bit overeager last year. I filled out my application over a couple months. I liked pacing myself because it left less time waiting after the application was done. I'd recommend getting your apps in early, though, like middle of September so you aren't rushed and your stuff gets processed quicker because it isn't in the huge pile of last minute applications.

This makes so much sense. You'll be waiting from October to December to hear back from schools regarding invites, and then longer regarding acceptances, so the less waiting you volunteer for the happier you'll be. 🙂
Do you mean processed as in the loading time it takes to actually click the "Submit" button? Cus I don't think VMCAS sends out completed applications to the schools until after the deadline, so submitting early doesn't affect school processing time.

Sorry to worry anybody! I feel better knowing my application is mostly done, but I realize for some people, turning it in later is less stressful because there is less of a wait. Last year, I finished it a little at a time, but this year I just want this application to be finished and submitted. The sooner I can submit it, the sooner I can forget about the application altogether until interview invites and acceptances are sent. I plan to wait til mid-September to submit it still, though. According to the AAVMC website, 85% of applicants wait until the last two weeks to submit their application. My goal is to submit it before those last two weeks.

Not new for Western on the interview invite part, and I think it is not new that the schools receive the apps in the order they are submitted (so they know was really early, or really late, but otherwise it wont really matter).

I feel this is very relevant to how Ohio State does their process. The sooner your app is in, the sooner they review it (or so I was told during the app process) don't know if any current students can comment to the accuracy on that?

I just want to turn mine in before I go back to school in September. That way I can have all my hours from this summer and have plenty of time to work on my personal statement and everything (ugh, I still have to write that...) but not have to worry about it when I have classes. Of course, that probably won't work out because of all the supplementals. I'm pretty 😱 about Cornell, for one...

FWIW, during my first cycle, I pretty much submitted my apps like the day before the deadline. Wait listed at 4 out of 5 schools. I really don't think it matters all that much.
You might hear back earlier that your app is complete, but for the most part, most schools don't seem to start doing any sort of evaluating until they have all the apps to compare. I mean, each application cycle is entirely different, so they can't necessarily just base their decision on prior cycles. They look at what they currently have.

On NCSU's website they suggest getting the app in early (September-ish I believe). The idea is that if you get in touch with the school to make sure that everything was received, if something wasn't received (maybe it got lost in the mail, maybe you happened to overlook something, etc etc)...you actually have time to take care of it. If you submit everything last minute and something hasn't been received by the school...well, you're gonna have to apply again next time.
I think that's the only benefit of submitting early. Even then, though, I wouldn't consider submitting earlier than September. But that's just me.
