c/o 2018 applicants

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Does anyone know how strict UC davis is with the PPI evaluation deadline? I submitted mine on Sept 30, and just realized it takes 4 days for ETS to send it electronically. I know Colorado is flexible, as long as you have it in by this week. But what about Davis?? Thanks!!

I don't remember exactly, but I'm pretty sure that the UC Davis website said somewhere to send it to them at least 2 weeks before the deadline due to processing time. I could be wrong though.

I'm starting to stress out over financial aid. About 4 years ago I settled a credit card debt that my ex had run-up, and now I'm worried it might affect my grad loan plus eligibility. Am I freaking out for nothing? I know I am. First things first...get accepted, right? 😉

Your should be fine! If that was a while and go and your have been good with your credit since then. It seems like it more recent offenses 🙂

I hope so! I have a terrible habit of looking too far ahead... I try to be "present", which is, all too often, an epic fail 😛

When is everyone thinking of starting their financial aid? I was told that we should start early...How early?

I would look at the school that you applied to. They all have different "priority" deadlines. However, I know that FASFA requires tax information or approximation of which (I am a FASFA queen 🙁 ). So I will be waiting until the beginning of next year... Plus I do not think that you can even start one for the 2014-2015 school year yet.

👍 not going to lie...I was not terribly optimistic about my chances last year, so I didn't apply until after I got in (March). I wouldn't recommend that though.

Thanks! I was thinking January, just to get it over with. And to give me to time to deal with any possible problems.

Okay... I'm wanting to go to Tennessee's vet school. The dean of admissions said to raise my GPA. I don't want to waste money on undergrad statistics without first having a sort of plan b in case I don't get into vet school again. I'm taking classes in the vet school there through a masters program as a non-degree seeking student and also taking undergrad statistics to raise my undergrad and physical sciences GPA. The classes would apply towards a masters in Comparative and Experimental Medicine. I couldn't find a mentor last minute. So that's my plan B if I don't get accepted to UT. And if I do get accepted, I have 6 years to complete the masters.
Is this a good idea? Is it helping to strengthen my application?
I mean... It shows dedication that's for sure.
???
Nervous about this year.
What do you guys think? :/
And yeah... I know this is off-topic... Sorry.

Meh... I filled it out in March/April/ish. It still got processed really fast. Just pay attention to your school, they tend to have dates set up, usually March, but it won't hurt to do it earlier, just really isn't necessary, unless you just don't want to worry about it any more. Hasn't hurt me yet filling it out in March/April and I did FAFSA for all 4 years of undergrad and these 2 years of vet school so far.

I was told the same thing by Wisconsin and I decided to do a similar route. I decided if I was going to be spending money on classes, I wanted to put them towards a degree. The way I see it, it really can't hurt to works towards a graduate degree as a backup plan.

The only thing that could be a potential problem with your plan B would be if you were already in the graduate program and weren't expected to graduate for another year. I know some schools want you to finish that second degree if you're already in the process of getting it.

I thought of that, but I didn't really know what else to do. I'm enrolled as a non-degree seeking student though so I'm not technically in the process of getting it yet... I guess...
I really went out on a limb by moving down here and not really being committed to anything... We'll see...

Yeah, I was told by my advisor at Cornell that I needed to raise my GPA for any chance at vet school, so I didn't bother with applications last year, and just went all in for a masters course that I started in September 2012. I took full time classes for one year, and then just submitted vet apps for the c/o 2018. I definitely think doing the masters helps strengthen your application if your main weakness was the GPA, because it shows dedication and that you can handle hard coursework (as long as you get good grades this time around), though it can reflect badly if you leave partway through. How many years would you have to do if you were enrolled full time as a degree seeking candidate? As a non-degree student, vet schools may not view it as you dropping the commitment halfway through the masters, especially if you could pick up where you were in 4 years and still try to finish within the 6 year limit... But realistically, if you got your vet degree, would you really want to go back and finish the masters? I probably wouldn't, and so personally I would have chosen to try to finish the masters first so that you actually have something to show for the time and money you invested in it, as well as more grades to help boost your GPA, especially if you don't make it into vet school the first attempt.

By the way, if it's a 2 year degree and if it's financially do-able for you, something you might want to think about is completing a year of the masters course as a degree seeking student so that you have some grades to show, and then applying to vet school at the beginning of the second year so that you could finish off the second year of your masters and earn the degree, and begin vet school immediately after?

.. on another note, grumble grumble, my VMCAS app is still being verified. Should have submitted earlier, I'm so impatient for schools to start reviewing it already! :smack:

I figured I could just apply to my program during this next semester IF I don't get into vet school (3rd try for this cycle) in the spring and then finish out the masters next year. I think. And then go to vet school (IF I get in), and if I needed to do research then I could do it during the summers when I'm not doing the DVM program. IF everything works out, I SHOULD be able to do both.
More letters after my name than in my name, 🙂

I'd say that's a pretty good plan then, you've got your back up worked out if you don't get in, and if you do get in, well... that was the goal to begin with, I suppose! Might be a bit stressful doing both programs, but it seems like you've got an idea of what to do, so I have faith that you'll be able to pull it off. The more letters the better! 🙂

Also - are many other people still in the verification stage on VMCAS? I know I need to be patient, but I really want to access and finish off those last few supplementals.

Really.. are there many people still waiting for verification? I'm starting to get nervous over how long it's taking for my app, especially as they didn't get one of my transcripts (my british one, VMCAS told me not to send it to them and to send it on directly to the schools). I did as asked, but I'm still paranoid that something is going to prevent all my applications from being mailed out.. and I'm impatient to get access to the ohio and davis supplements/portals. I know they're not due till November 1st, but that's starting to creep up faster than I'm comfortable with.

Sorry, I was verified early September. I would call VMCAS. When did you submit it? If its been within the 4 weeks that they predicted then it may just be a bit longer. I'm sure you're fine. ..chin up! 😎

I may give them a quick call tonight to see whats up. I'm still just within the 4 weeks (damnit I should have submitted earlier!), so logically I know I should stop worrying, but I can't help it haha. I'm like that girl that thinks she's pregnant when she hasn't gotten any action in more than 9 months.. Sigh, I'm clearly going crazy. 🙄

ALSO - had a MASSIVE heart attack of excitement this morning when I got an email off Massey regarding my application. It had in large letters 'conditional offer of place' in the attachment, and I thought I'd been accepted until I read the fine print under it and saw that the offer was conditional on the fact that they receive one of my missing transcripts and my gre scores by Dec 2, and on if the adcom reviews and accepts it  Damnit, so close!

The "easy part".. I had one of my non pre-professional friends refer to the app decision waiting game as that, and I just laughed. 🙄

That actually is the "easy part" once you get in and reflect back on everything. I know it doesn't seem that way, but once you get accepted and are in the middle of the massive amounts of studying, you will see that the application stuff was a piece of cake compared to the actual school part.

Fair enough, I know actually going to vet school is going to be the hardest part of all of this, but at least I'll be able to decide how hard to work and have an impact on how things will turn out. For now I just hate not knowing whether or not I'll even be given that chance, and having the decision out of my hands for this cycle. I would rather be rewriting apps than waiting on decisions! It was like that for my undergrad apps as well.. Patience is not my strong point, haha. But ah well, trying my hardest to stay busy and distracted from thinking about it all!

Actually, the waiting was probably the second hardest part of the whole thing, school included - second only to having to become long-distance with my SO. I'd much rather be slogging through school, knowing that I'll be done here in less than two years (even with other unknowns ahead) than wondering where the heck I'll end up (if anywhere) for vet school. I'm an impatient person and big on having things planned out - I'd rather be on the path than wondering which direction to start in.

👍

I just want the chance to work my ass off.

Yes, waiting is one of the hardest parts of the application process... I applied 3 years in a row and was waitlisted every year somewhere. Waiting sucks, until you get that first interview, then there is that to worry about. Then waiting again after that, which sucks even more than the initial waiting. Then the waiting if you are waitlisted which is the worst possible form of waiting ever. It is a roller coaster ride. Best thing to do is to try not to worry or even think about it, as hard as that is.

Couldn't agree more. Yeah school is rough, but it has the element of personal control at least that applications don't. I know that I'm about to go spend all morning studying in lab so I can learn this histology crap, but if I decide to put it off and mess around today, well that's entirely my prerogative and will be demonstrated one way or the other when I take that exam. As opposed to not knowing where I would be going or if I would be in vet school at all. I admire and respect the people who truck through multiple application cycles, because I don't know if my heart could've taken it.

Being wait listed sucks horribly, you keep that glimmer of hope until the second week into the semester when they can still call you. It makes it hard to concentrate on reworking on applications. As grateful as I was to be wait listed, I kind of wanted it to just be over with...

Thankfully I have school to worry about this time around.

Yikes, yeah wait listing would be awful. Good for you dvmd for making it through three times of that! Don't know that I'd handle it that well. Anyways urghh keeping busy is key. Thank god for SDN, its a nice distraction and it makes me feel better to commiserate with others and hear other people's stories! Gives me hope.

So... LSU calculated my last 45 credits GPA to be 3.74, but I calculated it and got a 3.75 lol... I know it's not a huge difference, but should I claim?

I've been waitlisted two years in a row now. 🙁

For those of you posting that you were told to raise your GPA, would you mind sharing your GPA? I am asking because I have a feeling I will be told to do the same thing, and want to be realistic with myself.

If you look at the accepted applicants threads, you can get an idea of what the stats are for people accepted to various schools. There are a number of people (including myself) who get in with low GPAs. That's not to say that you shouldn't want to improve yours, but it can be done!

Just wanted to drop by and check in on my fellow 2018 Hopefuls. Hope everyone is surviving 🙂

I'm doing ok, but definitely stressed fthe hell out 😱 LOL Hope everyone is also hangin' in there. If it wasn't for SDN I think I'd implode!

Has anyone heard anything from OSU?? It seems like last year this is around the time when they started sending out interview invites.

Shayna posted on the OSU thread yesterday saying they were preparing to start sending out invites today... so keep your fingers crossed and just check your email! 🙂 I'm sure people will start posting once they start receiving them. I'm trying to distract myself all day, getting tired of already pulling open my email so often..

Gah! The Heart attack begins! Thank you 🙂 I'm in state and I know last year they did a lot of out of state interviews first so I won't discourage myself too much! What is the name of the OSU thread? I never knew that there was a separate one.

When is everyone thinking of starting their financial aid? I was told that we should start early...How early?

Each school has different requirements some require that you have your FAFSA in by a certain time in order to get scholarships. The year i applied Purdue wanted everything by Feb 15 and they sent me a Financial Aid package with prior to the the April 15 deadline. the other schools i applied to were in March sometime.

It's right here: http://forums.studentdoctor.net/threads/ohio-state-university-class-of-2018-hopefulls.1010559/page-2

I think pretty much most of the schools have their own individual threads, so you can stalk those as well if you've applied to any others. I'm sure people will post up on the c/0 2018 interview invite thread as well as soon as they start receiving them today. Ahh keeping my fingers crossed! And yeah, it's only just the first set of invites, they'll be sending out more, so don't worry too much if you don't get one today. Though of course, that's easier said than done, I'm sure I'll be worrying like crazy if I don't get one haha.

This waiting is like being a kid anticipating Christmas morning. Only our lists are applications. And being "naughty or nice" really holds no sway. I doubt that cookies and milk would help our plight either. Carols, anyone?

cookies and milk might go further than you think
