Class of 2017.... how you doin?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
On my way to get my first rabies vaccine today I panicked for about 30 seconds that I was going to be severely allergic to the vaccine and not be able to get the 2nd two shots and therefor couldn't be a vet. Sometimes I hate how my brain works, haha. Good news is, I only have a headache and a sore arm.

I have 6 weeks left of work. So excited!! Donating a tin of clothes, packed some winter clothes, and have been generally cleaning. I have a to do list a mile long.

Ugh...I'm going to talk to my doctor next Thursday about whether I can get the vaccine here before school. Every time I think about it I freak out. This is the worst part of getting into vet school until I have to actually deal with being in vet school, definitely.

I can't find someone to supply the vaccine.... 🙁 I have tried EVERYWHERE. Health Department is even giving me a hard time. I could wait until I get to school because I don't need it until the end of my first year, but my families insurance will cover all cost is I do it before I move. (I have to be independent from them at OSU, so I can't use their insurance anymore come Aug)

I just need ONE place to say yes 🙁

Have you tried a travel clinic? I also found a " vaccine clinic" in my aRea that would do it... But travel clinics should definitely have it.

I'm not sure how she managed it, but one of the vet tech students I used to work with was able to just buy the vaccine from her doctor and have the senior vet tech at our clinic (who was also an EMT) administer it. If you know anyone who works in human medicine, maybe you could do it that way?

You should be able to stay on your parent's insurance...you just have to reimburse them for your part. I would double check to be sure, though.

Well there's at least a few! Have you decided where you're living yet?

A fellow classmate of mine had a pharmacist administer it???? She ordered it and administered it. Just throwing that out there. I know nothing more.

The rabies vaccine is really annoying me. During my physical, the NP said they could order it and give it to me (which I figured) but it was $40 more expensive than getting it done at school. blergh. I have so much going on until I move that I might just put it off and get it done at Cornell... even though it's $1050

Yep, Stonegate. Have the trailer and everything. I picked it out at open house. Just going through the motions of insuring it now. You?

*head desk* I can't agree with this more. I've called several clinics asking for the rabies vaccination and no one seems to want to work for me. It can't be that difficult to order. I called a local chain pharmacy and the woman on the line had a freak out, telling me to get to the local ER right away. Yeah not bitten, just a vet student. 🙄

Too funny! I can't believe you all are having this much trouble. I would think every hospital/nursing station would be up on having pre and post exposure vaccines. Lots and lots of dogs running around with irresponsible owners if nothing else.

Renting at Avalon. Brand new 2013 model. Really nice, and never been lived in. I'm just ready to get down there

Haha... it's just one more thing on this giant list I have of "things to do before I move" and I feel like even if it costs me a little extra, it might just be worth the extra money to get it done at Cornell just so I don't have to think about it any more.

@Lupin21 - it's not a common vaccine and some of the places I've called have mentioned they are experiencing a shortage of the pre-exposure shots. Most places seem really confused when I ask them about it.

I'd feel the same way if I wasn't going to Europe in a week...now I'm just scrambling to get everything done because I'm going to have a short turnaround time before leaving for Auburn. I'm probably going to arrive right on that weekend before our orientation. When do you think you'll get there?

My problem with the rabies vaccine is that I'm going to be gone in Europe for 32 days...that's too much time between the second and third shots. Auburn will have them though so I'll just have to do it at school. Hope it's not too much more...

Our technician at my current clinic just had her series. Our vet just called the hospital and had them order it. They received it in less than a week and I live in a really small town in Oklahoma. For those of you having trouble, maybe go to your local vet and ask them if they have any thoughts on where to get them. Worth a try.

I'll be moving in July 15th. I have a truck if you need any help with anything. Very jealous about Europe though.

As for rabies, I talked to Kaye about it. I don't think that auburn will doing the shots until spring semester at the earliest. Something about new information about the vaccine only having a two year efficacy.

I think it might depend on whether you live in a region with lots of rabies in the wildlife. Out here in CA, every place I called could order it and lots of places had one or two series-worth of the vaccine on hand. Are you somewhere where rabies isn't strongly endemic? It's a BIG problem in some parts of CA.

For the rabies pre-exposure vaccines, you could also try calling up local wildlife rehab centers. They often require staff to get the vaccine, so they might know of a solid place to go for it.

That sounds about right! I live in NYC 😀 There are some raccoons in prospect park (+ pigeons, squirrels, chipmunks, etc.) but not a ton of other wildlife here for obvious reasons.

That's weird..I called my local health department and they referred me to the closet city's health dpt (only 45 min away). The city's dept had walk in hours. I didn't need any documentation saying why I needed it either...I just said I needed a rabies vaccine, filled out some paperwork, and got my shot. Have you tried any big cities near you? I'm not sure how close to the border you are but maybe try a big city in another state?

Wow! That's expensive 🙁 Mine were $209 per shot ($627 total) at a city's health department in PA.

Orientation starts at 8AM on my birfday.

My SO is a chem grad student, and he just got into a really cool two-week summer program to learn some specific imaging and modeling techniques. It's a really good opportunity for him, his PI wants him to go, the program is run by a professor who collaborates closely with my SO's undergrad advisor, basically it's awesome all around.

Except that the two weeks of the program are the second and third weeks of the vet school semester. I'm already nervous, I don't want to be on my own starting school! :scared:

I'm trying not to let him know how nervous I am (he's going, it's not a discussion, and I don't want him to feel guilty or not enjoy it while he's there). At least he'll be here for the first week of classes....

You'll be ok. 🙂 I moved across the country and started vet school on my SO's birthday with him 1300 miles away. Time will fly. Enjoy.

I go for my last RV Vx on Wednesday!! So excited I didnt have any reaction from them at all.

I'm surprised, but my injection site from the first rabies vax has already stopped hurting. I'm usually way out on the end of the bell curve in terms of vaccine reactions, so I'm looking at this as a good sign for the next two. :xf:

I got mine Wednesday night and there was no pain by Friday morning 🙂 I did have a bad headache Wednesday night after my shot though. Hoping it was unrelated but I guess I'll find out this coming Wednesday when i get my second one!

I hurt for days for both the TDaP and flu vaccines, couldn't barely lift my arm above shoulder height! I was worried the rabies vaccines would be the same way, especially hearing how everyone talks about them. But I hardly had any pain, just a little soreness at the injection site for an hour or two afterward. It was such a relief! 🙂

I was fine for my first and third vax, but I got really sick after the second one (flu like symptoms). Hope you pull through without any reactions!

Yeah it wasn't nearly as bad I was expecting. Thought the flu shot made my arm more sore than the rabies did. For whatever reason I think yellow fever is the worst vaccine I've had, it tried to kill my arm.

Unless I am mistaken, the vaccine isnt a requirement for the UK schools since they are rabies free - but a student at Edinburgh told me that you can get the vaccine through the national health system by proving that you are a vet student and will need it for when you travel for EMS and/or when you come back to the states. And she said it was free (although she said it was a huge pain in the ass to get them to pay for it since they normally charge). 👍

You're right. I wanted to get the series because of my current work as wildlife clinic vol and vet tech. The CDC only recommends the rabies vaccine for those working with bats in the UK. I also figured I would be doing EMS work outside the country and that it would be good to get the shots out of the way this summer. Are you going to get an MMR titer?

I told myself I was going to get so much packing done for the 10 days my SO was away at work. I've packed one box and he's coming home on Thursday...:smack:

I keep telling myself I have t weeks. But really... 5 weeks to pack my whole life? And I'm still working so that cuts onto it a lot. I need to get on it. But...ugh.

I move exactly a month from today!

Random question: When people recommend the Pasquini anatomy book, is it the first one on this site?
http://www.sudzpublishing.com/availablebooks.html

Or another one on that site or elsewhere? I see they have an 11th edition but I can only find the 4th edition on Amazon and half.com.

So I'm moving on Saturday (in 4 days omg) and I feel so unprepared! I'm also finding it hard to get motivated enough to actually put crap in boxes! I just keep thinking, well I still have time...

Blargalarg

I move 1 month from today!!! Holy smokes, time is going so fast... Today I Will pack one box.... I'm thinking my book case... I think I can manage that lol

I've found that if I tell myself - ok, let's do one box today.. I actually get it done and I sometimes get two done instead haha. Baby steps.
