Class of 2017.... how you doin?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Some of my boyfriend's family responded to the news of me getting into vet school with "But now when are you guys going to get married and have kids. You better do it soon while grandpa is still alive."

Sure, I'd be happy to put my dreams of vet school on hold to pop out a kid. People really don't think before they speak!

My In-laws are driving my husband and I crazy! They already have 5 grand-kids but keep bugging us when we are going to pop one out!! My FIL keeps trying to guilt trip us saying he isn't going to be around forever, but they aren't going to be the ones trying to raise a baby while in vet school... vet school costs enough w/o having hosp and diaper bills...

See, nobody is bugging me about having a kid, but my sister (who got married last summer) got upset at me for deciding to go to the UK for vet school even though living abroad has been a lifelong dream of mine. She got mad because: "But I'm probably going to have a kid in the next few years and I would like you to be around for that." Sure. Let me put my dreams on the backburner to make you happy. That seems fair. Especially since your kid won't even remember me until he or she is a few years old. And even if I was staying in the US, it's not like I would have a lot of time to "be around for that" anyway. I love my sister and family so much, but sometimes they are so selfish! 😡

My family is much more "go to school, do well, get settled and have a career. Think about family after all of that"

👍 This is how my mom is. In fact, my (younger) sister is getting married this coming September and my whole family just knows she wants to start popping out kids ASAP, and my mom is just flipping her lid trying to get me to convince her to wait until her man has a job in his career of choice (since she doesn't really care what she does). I just have to keep reminding her that I agree 100% and if I could convince her otherwise I would...

Unfortunately I seriously think she might end up preggers before the wedding. Which is just my sister being incredibly stupid because he doesn't have a job yet (he just graduated from police academy), they have no money, and no place to live. But there's only so much you can do...

I got my lease and now just to sign and send it back. I am glad I have housing settled. NOW I need to resume purging my room and making decisions of trash/donate/leave/take. Also have to buy stuff and pack and just everything.

If I was getting married and I was in the bold situation, I would be panicking all the time.

My cousin and his wife are like this. No money (he does landscaping and snowplowing and she's not working at all right now), living in a tiny dump of a three bedroom apartment, and they have FIVE kids. Two from her previous marriage and three of their own. Doesn't help that the three youngest all have serious health problems. You'd think after having two seriously ill babies they'd stop . . . but no, they went ahead and had a third. Hopefully they've figured out how to use contraceptives by now, but I wouldn't be surprised if she announces another pregnancy within the next year.

Oh yeah, and even though they spend all their time complaining about how expensive everything is and how they can't afford to buy stuff for their kids, they still both have iPhones . . . they've totally got their priorities straight. 🙄

My sister is an ex-drug addict, ex-felon living with her "boyfriend (?)" may be fiance now?? I am not sure. Anyway, he has 3 kids from a previous marriage, she has 2 kids now and just announced that she is pregnant again... :smack:

They can't afford kids, well, actually, they can because they are living off government assistance. 🙄

My one niece has speech problems but my sister does nothing to help her just keeps thinking, "oh, the public school system will take care of them." 😡

Also, she is now 6 and is not toilet trained. She had been at one time, but now she is having issues again, she has expressed to my sister that she is actually uncomfortable/in pain when going to the "potty" but my sister still hasn't taken her in to be seen. It is FREE for her, government assistance and all... just take the poor kid. Now kids at school are starting to pick on her. Poor baby. 🙁

My sister also does not have her priorities straight. For my niece's first Christmas I asked my sister what she needed and my sister said, "well, she could use a jacket because I couldn't afford one after I bought the other kids a video game system for Christmas." Um... are you fecking kidding me!!???? Ugh. So my first Christmas present to my niece was a jacket.

It is just sad. And now she is having another one... ugh. :bang:

Granted, it has been getting a little better over the years, but still... ugh. I feel bad for those kids and I honestly don't really like kids that much. But kids deserve to be young, sweet, innocent and have a life where all of their *needs* are met. And she can provide that, she just chooses to put wants in front of needs sometimes and doesn't realize that things aren't "just going to work out" that you have to DO SOMETHING to get things to "work out".

My family is the same.. Except it makes me really mad that they want me and my fiancé to wait until I'm out of school to get married... Ummmm. NO. We are ready to be married. It doesn't mean I'm gonna start popping out kids or give up on vet school. 😡

I hear ya. My family thought we wanted to get married to start having children. Not the plan at all. Maybe in another 5 years? You just gotta do what's right for you sometimes. Married life has been so great and way less complicated for us.👍

Exactly, we have a plan.. We would like to spend some time with just us for a while. Especially since he is In the Army and the past 2 years have been long distance.

Plus, I'd like to be a practicing vet for 4-5 years before babies come along. 🙄

We plan on eloping when he gets home from deployment.. They will get over it lol

I'm less than 24 hours from taking my last undergraduate exam ever (which, considering I graduated with a BA 5 years ago and have been constantly enrolled in at least one course ever since, is a big deal) and I just can't make myself care about it.😱

*** Bummmp ***

Congrats to everyone graduating!! Let the countdown to Vet school begin!! Less than 3 months until Mizzou's orientation.. I would be lying if I said I wasn't starting to get nervous!!

I think I found housing for next year. I filled out the application and the manager for the company was pretty certain I'd get it. It's all more real now.

I keep saying next year like it's not just three months away. As stressful as my job can be, I don't want to leave the shelter.

Currently shopping for my textbooks for this fall online... I can't afford to become a Doctor .. ugh confused:😕

....Even the used books (I will never buy new books) are expensive

Do you actually need the books?
I never used half of the "Required" books for vet school. I've gotten more use out of ones I bought on my own - SA internal med, LA internal med mostly

Really? I only *really* used the dissection guide, Wheater's, and maybe Thrall once or twice.

I am trying to find these two for cheap!

1. Miller's Anatomy of the Dog: Authors - Evans and Christiansen

2. Manual of Veterinary Clinical Chemistry: A Case Study Approach, 2010: Authors -Sharkey & Radin

I didn't find Miller's all that helpful. It's been elevating my TV to optimal viewing height for about 3 years now.

I guess in that regard it's helpful, but not cost effective.

Just got rejected in the first round of applications for the USDA/APHIS Saul T Wilson Jr. scholarship. I had just been fantasizing about having that money and job, too.

I guess ya win some, ya lose some. Oh well.

Sorry about the scholarship situation. I am slightly depressed thinking about student loans. We have tried so hard to stay out of debt, but I guess it's one of those things. We have zero on our vehicles and credit card. We plan to have our house paid off by 2017-2018. So, it should work out.... I hope! I just have to focus on school in August and find a job in 2017, other than fast food! LOL!

Pretty sure the only books I opened the entire second year of vet school were either a) books I bought on my own because I thought they'd be useful (maybe 2 books total), and b) books in the library that I needed for Clinical Pathology.

First year the only books I really opened were my anatomy books (Evans dissection and both Pasquini and .. Dyce?). I think I glanced at radiology a couple times. I don't recall any other useful book.

I am jealous. You have gotten more use out of I than I have. The best I can say is mine is providing stability for my bookshelf.

Bumping this thread because I'm off looking at condos today! It's definitely nice to be staying the same city. 👍

Soooo....what's new guys? Everyone found a place? Bought any cool stuff? 🙂

I just went through all my clothes and got rid of a while bunch of stuff today! Slowly starting to clear out some things so I can contemplate packing it up. I'm not moving until the end of July though. So I still have a while to go.

I officially have an apartment at the end of July.... but no furniture... Baby steps!!

No furniture for me either. I'm just going to get stuff when I move out there. I'm going to order a mattress and bed to get delivered the first full day I'm there. That way I can have a bed for my first night. The other stuff I'll just get when I get out there. I at least have some kitchen stuff, so that's good.

My roommate and I found a condo a few weeks ago and I am super stoked about it! It's right on the river (there are boat slips for rent there), it's gated, has covered parking, and it's only 5 minutes to the vet school. The only drawback is that we can't move in until the weekend before classes start 🙁. I have to be out of my current place July 1st, so my plan is to move my stuff to a storage unit in Knoxville and live with my folks for a month. I really need to start packing my stuff up, but I really hate moving lol.

Thats my plan too! I figure I will have two weeks to find some furniture before I start in the fall. I have a good bed and mattress and my boyfriend has a pick-up truck, so we will probably be loading up the truck with that for the 18 hour drive so that I can save some money... I will definitely have to figure out how to get it wrapped in plastic though, in case of summer rains during the move!

I have had my place figured out for a month now. Not moving until August, don't really need furniture for the house, just need to furnish my room. Buying a bed there and currently have my kitchen stuff. I still have tons to do!

I officially paid my "deposit" (really just my rent for the first month there) yesterday, and met one of my two housemates. I'm going to be moving my bed from home and one of my friends who did undergrad at LSU is giving me a desk and a bookshelf. Only problem is how I'm going to get them up the little spiral staircase to my room...I'm going to love living up there, but I am SO going to hate moving into it.

My mom, sister, and I just spent all day cleaning the apartment my sister and I are subleasing for the summer. We are subleasing a place from 4 guys who from the looks at it haven't cleaned their place in the 2 years they've lived there (they even told me that they don't own a vacuum). :eyebrow:

Several hours later after deep cleaning the place looks immaculate compared to before!

They said they'd clean it for us before we moved in but .... that didn't happen

You should dock $100 off whatever you're paying for rent and tell them it's your "cleaning fee".

that's what we are considering! I took some pictures of it too, before and after

And I am furniture shopping online. Livin risky

Oooh...that does sound risky.

I'm going to be furniture shopping at my parents' house. 🙂 They're downsizing their house at the same time I'm moving. Score!

Well, not super duper risky (shopping jcpenney, sears, target, etc). I have to buy things out there and want to order for it to arrive the day or day after I arrive.

Ugh I have been packing up my apartment and there are boxes everywhere now - along with quite a few for Goodwill. I'm moving out and into storage at the end of this month, then will be out of the country for all of July and some of August, and I still have no idea where I'm moving into when I get back. I'm starting to get nervous - was staying calm until June (when most places know about August move in dates) but I just don't know where I'm willing to compromise! Price, location, so on.

I hope I find a place soon!

That's always the worst. I found apartment hunting rather stressful. it was weird not having any place to live lined up for the next school year until last week.

best of luck finding a place!

I'm freaking the **** out. I'm having a hell of a time because of my pets.

Moving sucks. Between a vet school budget, living in MD while looking, a pit bull, having a kid (and therefore need a good school district and no roommates), and dings to my credit apt. hunting was awful...but its done!

I'm freaking the **** out. I'm having a hell of a time because of my pets.

I had trouble with that too 🙁 granted I don't have any pets now but I plan on adopting one in vet school. Most places I've looked at were cats and dogs only (small dogs and breed restrictions and stuff).

One place said that cats must be declawed and another place said on their lease agreement "No exotic animals" 😛

I asked one about rabbits and they said "no cuz they will chew up the wood" ... even when I told them I am a vet student. GRRRR

oh well settling on adopting a kitty is okay. these landlords are all too picky
