Class of 2017.... how you doin?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Is anyone else irrationally anxious about moving? I've never lived in a "college town" before so seeing apartments on craigslist for leases that begin in august is really freaking me out. I live in a city with a particularly cut-throat rental market but I've lived in the same place for the last five years. I hate moving! I think we might go look at some places on Friday but we live about 5 hours away so it's not like we can just pop over there whenever we want.... and I'm worried if we don't figure it out soon all the "good" ones will be gone. 🙁 Irrational? Probably.

(I guess I should mention that I have very specific requirements for an apartment... and with a husband and 5 cats many apartments or rooms in shared apartments are off the list)

I am worrying too. I've contacted a couple of places (I will be moving with a 75 lb lab mix and 2 cats) to see what their pet policy is. I'm also worried if I don't "commit" soon that all the good places will be gone.

I am so, so glad I already moved last summer and I'm not trying to find housing now.

I'm actually in the opposite situation as several of y'all seem to be: I've been moving once or twice a year (three times one year) for the past five years, and now I'm going to be living in one house for probably the next 7 or 8 (I'm doing a DVM/PhD). It's really nice to be able to say "I can take the time to fix something or find the perfect piece of furnature for this room, because I won't be moving out in four months."

I had the same anxiety and couldn't talk myself down, so I applied to an apartment place and know the general vicinity, if not the exact apartment, where I'll be living.

Mind, the vet school sends out housing information for students in May, so maybe I was jumping the gun to do that in January. :scared:

Probably. A lot of peeps don't even know where (or if) they're going yet. I suppose it never hurts to start early, though I don't think it's something worth worrying over.

I'm definitely jumping the gun too but I think I'll be able to sleep better at night knowing that it's taken care of already! We're seeing 3 places so far on Friday :xf:

Gosh I hope not, I haven't even decided where I'm going yet! I'll probably start looking for housing in May/over the summer...1) I won't have to worry about my thesis/classes anymore and 2) if I stay IS I'll be able to actually go look at some.

I've been looking and I've been worrying that because I'm moving to a small town all the pet friendly apartments will be taken.

I'm having the same anxiety about housing. I've started looking at ads for rentals, but right now they're mostly students looking for subletters for the summer. I haven't found anything that's available in August yet, though I still have some digging to do. I just want to find some place quickly because I want a nice 1 bedroom apartment with no roommates that allows cats and isn't too expensive, and I'm worried that's going to be hard to come by. Plus I'm a planner, so the sooner I get the housing situation squared away, the more relaxed I'll be.

For those of you looking at housing, I'm not entirely sure how the areas you're looking at work, but keep in mind that a lot of stuff can become available later on. At least in Philly, a lot of leasing agencies are still unsure which of their rentals are going to be available so a lot of locations aren't being posted as available yet. I'm actually going through this process again because my roomie and I are trying to move into a 3 BR apt, but I know that a lot isn't available yet.

Yes that's what U of I says, most things are available in the spring/summer as well (some people rush to sign as lease in October, at least the undergrads do)

I just got my acceptance today so now I'm looking around for places to live.

I decided that I would be happier having roommates (one or two) but currently do not have anyone. I think it would be less lonesome, cheaper rent, and you could help each other out. I have a girl in mind that I go to school with now and if she decides to go where I do I plan on asking her. She will be in the same vet school class as me. Is your roommate in your class too? I've heard mixed things about living with people in your class but I feel like for some it could work and it could be helpful. Some people love it and others don't. This girl and I have pretty similar personalities, living styles, and have gotten along quite well for undergrad. I'm not very meticulous about the way my house is kept so I feel like I would do alright. I've never lived in an apartment before with roommates (all 4 years living in a a residence hall) so not sure what to expect.

just trying to figure out the situation. looking for advice. thanks

I do actually live a classmate. She and I didn't know each other before hand and both just happened to be looking for housing at the same time. It'sbeen working fine so far. Maybe the occasional annoyance but that's really it. We'll be living together again next year and will be adding another classmate who currently lives by herself. Hopefully things will still be okay, but we've both dealt with sucky roommate situations, so we both know how to deal wth it. I guess it works for me since I don't do the bulk of my studying at the apartment since i'm not productive there. So if issues were ever to arise, i'm not there for most of the day anyways.

That's great that it's been working out for you. I've decided that when we are vets we will all have to deal with people so might as well get more practice. There will always be issues in life and how you handle them is key. You don't want to put yourself in a bad situation but I feel like the little issues that might come from a roommate would be small compared to how rewarding it could be. I made a list of pros and cons of having a classmate for a roommate and my pros significantly outweighed the cons, plus i feel like the cons that i thought of could be easily fixed. Like if it's a bit loud at home and you want to study you can always go to a library (we have libraries open 24/7 here) so it would be alright. Plus they will need to study just as much as you. I feel like a non-vet med roommate would not understand our lifestyle and it would be much more difficult to live with certain people who are not in vet med. I know it works for some but for me I won't know anyone else next year outside of vet med. All my friends are graduating and moving away and I would not do a random roommate again (unless it were a vet student that I've met).

A Dr. at work keeps calling me her vet student and will be like "my vet student! where are you? come feel this hernia!" and has me taking a stethoscope into exam rooms with me now to listen to heart and lungs on every patient while I get TPR. She keeps telling me the more I hear now the more comfortable I will be later. This is very exciting but I feel like I am just playing pretend... I don't know how to register that this is real...

That's awesome! If your doc is that super cool, I would see if you could do a quick fundic exam on as many animals as you can see too. You don't even have to do it all that seriously or anything, but seeing all the different "normal" patterns would be super super valuable. Take advantage of the 1 on 1 instruction, because it's hard to come by on a regular basis during the first couple of years of vet school.

Yeah, it definitely depends on the person. I feel like us vet med people are generally workaholics, and my roommate for the past couple years has been quite the opposite. Gets his work done when he needs to and makes good grades, but takes easy classes, online when he can, likes to have people over and just chill a lot. I am out of the house a lot anyway, but when I'm around and maybe want to study at home he's very considerate, always asks about having people over before inviting anyone, keeps it quiet, etc. I kinda like living with someone with a pretty different lifestyle and hobbies (keeps things more interesting), but it definitely needs to be someone who has a respect for the importance of academics needed in this discipline.

All I can suggest is to wait a bit- things will free up. Also, the current first years will set up a facebook group at some point and there will be a bunch of housing opportunities that come through there.

I'm not certain if one of the spots will open up out where I am, but if it does I'll shoot you a PM 🙂

I have a headache from searching for housing all morning. Why does moving have to be so difficult??

What kind of housing are you looking for? If you PM me I have a whole bunch of stuff book marked I could send your way that might work for you and rainheart +1 if necessary.

I was feeling okay about deciding on a vet school, but now I'm stressing about it all over again. Made an appointment with career services to talk with my advisor after the break...I'm just going to try and not worry about it anymore until then.

That would be WONDERFUL if you could PM one of us 🙂 Thank you!!

I am at the same place as you are right now... So worried/confused about the loans I am about to take out. I haven't even picked a school yet... Really getting nervous about this debt

Guess I'm not cool enough to talk to the Illinois people since they made their OWN thread.... 😛

 .. Those threads don't go very far.. Which is why I think someone was like... If your reading this, don't make a thread like this for your school lol just hang out on the interview thread or maybe even the FB page lol ( sorry y'all just sayin )

I don't give a flying F about this class! Blargh!

Oh gawd this is killing me.

Dropping from 18 to 13 hours helped, but it's so hard to care about biochem (I already didn't really) and I'm so bad at it! Scraped by with a C in biochem 1, and this second semester is way harder. I did awful on the first test, but A&M's CVM requires it, so if I wanna stay here I need to (somehow) manage to pass...

K-state and another course drop is looking better and better :meanie:

Is anyone else worried about really silly things...like if I'm going to get a good seat on the first day of class

This is not silly at all. Totally legit. Especially at Ohio!! :meanie:

Bahaha not weird at all. When I went for my interview at Mizzou, Nordicat gave me a private tour the day before and we sat down in the 1st year auditorium.. I totally imagined/ figured out where I need to sit lol (call me crazy, I don't care :meanie: ) lol

Right now I'm just worried about getting a place to live. I'm going up next month for open house and to hopefully hammer out my living situation.

I was definitely stressing out about housing too up until last week which was my spring break. I made trip to Columbus and found a place with my roommate and put down a deposit! 😀 Now I'm just super excited to move in. I'm not sure if the next 4ish months are going to go super slow or really fast.

I'm jealous of all of you. I am still trying to hash out what school I want to attend! 😱 I wish April 15 wasn't approaching so quickly.

Thanks! I honestly wasn't expecting to have to make any kind of decision. I was fully prepared to have to apply again next year! But I guess it's a good problem to have! And congrats to you on getting into your dream school! That's awesome! 😍
