Class of 2017.... how you doin?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Why, I believe it is. I'm going with my parents and step-cousin. Gonna be a fantastic week of seafood greatness. We are wandering around the coast just a bit too. Gonna be my last get away for who knows how long...

Super jealous, I haven't been to Rockland in ages. Make sure you hit Wass's Hot Dogs for me while you're there. 😛

We also have overnight team building in the mountains. High and low ropes courses, games, and a talent show/open mic lol. We start the 20th with orientation, classes on the 27th 🙂

Woo! My big sib emailed me this morning! Lucky for her, I've already asked NStarz my first 53820953 questions...haha.
I haven't heard from my big yet, but she/he is also lucky that I have already bombarded Nstarz with my questions ALL year long heheh You should get some kind of award Nstarz for putting up with all of us nerotic pre-vetties/accepted students!

Hehe I don't mind at all 🙂

I got my big sib earlier this week! She ended up being the current student I was already friends with on Facebook. We've got a lot in common and she's super awesome. I'm glad she picked me 🙂

I got my "second year mentor" a few days ago (they're randomly assigned), and I'm a little shy...I guess I'll just email her and introduce myself?

My big sib is none other than Nordicat 🙂 ... She should get the best big sib award bc she has a copy of every single book I need- either in physical or PDF form! Not to mention we have been chatting since last November  Sooo excited!

No big sib for me yet 🙁

You are seriously I nice person. So helpful and nice all the time. I want to give you a hug.

Aww thanks 🙂 I'm blushing 😳 I'm this way IRL, too, unless you pi** me off. Hahaha.

I just caught up on the past month and a half of SDN (I've been so busy!). I've missed it. And I can't believe I'm moving overseas in less than 2 months! 😱 I haven't really started preparing for it at all (except for finishing my visa application, which I suppose is a big part of it all). It doesn't really seem real. And I've definitely got a case of Imposter Syndrome.

What am I getting myself into?!

TwistedRose, I can't believe you guys have already started! 😱

Good luck TwistedRose with your classes!
Yes, we are in week 2! I actually enjoy my classes so far. Our first test is next week. I'm enjoying Mississippi so far, but the lack of internet is horrible (having trouble getting it set-up).

It's good to know that other schools have the big sib/little sib program. My big sib was actually my best friend from undergrad. She's letting me borrow all the first year books she owns. Another SDN member (who I met on here about two years ago) is letting me borrow the ones my friend is missing. It's good to have connections!

Guys, I've been super productive during the past 2 weeks. On Google Drive I now have a detailed "estimated living costs" spreadsheet and a school/new house supplies list that I've shared with my immediate family members. I'm pretty confident about the numbers, too. So exciting! I love lists! Anyway, I recommend trying something like that if not just to get an idea of what you're spending every month.

On the flip side, I also just e-mailed my father asking him to discontinue the automatic "grocery allowance" transfer he set up back when I wasn't working during my 3rd year of undergrad. It's only a small amount, which is why I think he's forgotten about it, but I feel as though it's time for me to put on my big-girl pants and to stop taking money from my parents. They've always paid for my living costs; for that, I am grateful (and lucky). As much as I'd love having a few extra bucks every week in vet school, I'd feel guilty taking it 🙁 Wah. /blab.

My google drive is filled with these kind of things. I have Wld's financial understanding, budget, packing, to do lists, etc

Up until now, I was old-school and used the Notes and/or Stickies apps on my computer. Google Drive is so much more efficient because of the automatic updates and instant sharing capabilities. I'm such a doofus for having it as a resource for school projects for so long and not realizing I could use it for personal documents.

Gone are the days of e-mailing multiple attachments and getting confused when there are multiple versions of the same document 😳

and here I've only been using it for WW. Good idea!

My parents asked for descriptions if the cost of school, the federal loans, and a general breakdown of the money we are looking at. I did a three page description. And it just makes sense to make documents of lists. I like them. Easy to change, always able to access anywhere

This is definitely the best part. 😀 I tried to get into using Evernote, but it just didn't happen.

I don't even... What is this thing?! I don't even use computer stickies! I use REAL stickies!

um, yeah. I guess I went ancient-school and all my packing lists and to-do before moving are on loose sheets of paper or a little notebook.

I'm a devout dropbox user but I know a lot of the school apps on my ipad will connect to google drive too. Is it the same as dropbox? Has anyone used both?

I use both! My dropbox is mostly pictures from al my devices, my ebooks, and notes taken with notability. I use google drive for anything I want to share plus some random lists.

I am so horrible with technology lol I have no idea what Dropbox is.... I wish I did!

I get pretty stressed when people try to explain apps to me. My goal this summer is to figure out how to use Google Docs, because I would really like to organize the OSU live schedule for the fall.

dropbox! it's basically online file storage that can sync to your computer so you can access things from your computer (or phone or wherever it's installed) or from the internet. it's nifty.

(ps. use that link & get yourself (& me) extra space)

This whole conversation has me going, "Why did I not think of this?!" I was just thinking about how I'm going to have to buy an external hard drive, which is always a good idea but... cash is kind of an endangered species to me. But YES, for the time being I can just upload everything to the giant binder in the sky.

I'll have to look into all of these similar-sounding google things, though. Dropbox I've had some (limited) experience with, but then there's a Drive? And Docs is different? I know that I tried using the spreadsheet from Docs once and scrapped that idea pretty quickly because I couldn't find a way to do a linear regression line.

*Looks at the 8 Stickies dominating my desktop and hangs head in shame*

Oh I've tried using real-life stickies. Many times. I always lose them. Or they go unnoticed. Or I just throw them out. 😳

Google docs became google drive. Docs doesn't really exist anymore--it's all just one thing now. At least as far as I know.

My drop box account is at maximum capacity from my PDF vet school books 😱

Thinking about creating a new account with my vet school email to have more space lol ( don't wanna spend the money to expand my space 🙁 )

Can you move them to a Kindle account to free up some space? I know you can put PDFs on Kindle so it might be workable. And Kindle syncs like Dropbox does...

Hmmm... Never tried that.. Only thing is that my iPad is only 16 G so I don't wanna use all the space on it either lol

Downloaded! Now have to figure out what it does hahah

there are walk-through tutorials I think on their website that help you get used to it. plus, if I remember right, using the tutorials opens a little more space? can't actually remember.

If you download the desktop application it makes it a lot easier to upload documents and access them! Also, if you have an iPad, other tablet or smartphone, download the app so you can easily access your documents on there too! 🙂

For the peeps talking about using Google Docs, I'd encourage at least taking a tour of it so you're familiar with it. My classmates and I used it countless times this last semester to work on group assignments. It's great to be able to sit there and edit the document as a collective.

I plan on using DropBox for all my vet school notes and stuff. Mostly as a backup in the unlikely event that my brand new laptop decides to do a nosedive in the middle of the year. Since it will be mostly Word or OneNote documents, there should hopefully be plenty of space for me (maybe?). Which reminds me, I should really start playing around with OneNote before school starts, since I think that's what I'll use as my primary note taking app.

I have a Google Docs account that I really only use for group projects. Google Docs just feels a little too clumsy for everyday use, but maybe that's just me. I haven't touched my account in several years though . . . there are some interesting things in there, I'm sure.

I use Evernote for all my lists. Even stuff like recipes and grocery lists are great in Evernote, because I can check things off as I go along. I have the app on my phone, which is great because I usually think of things to add to the list when I'm out doing something completely unrelated. Since I always have my phone on me, I can just add things to the list right away instead of waiting until I get home, by which time I will have completely forgotten what it was that I needed to do. Plus Evernote automatically syncs to my Kindle, my laptop, and my online account so I can access the lists from anywhere I need to.

What did vet students ever do without technology? 😱

Can you record a lecture as well as write notes at the same time on a powerpoint with the OneNote program? (I might have totally made that up, but that would be an awesome app!!)

Sorry for all the technology questions, I feel so old, but I promise I am in my low 20's!! Just technologically behind!
