Class of 2017.... how you doin?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Can you record a lecture as well as write notes at the same time on a powerpoint with the OneNote program? (I might have totally made that up, but that would be an awesome app!!)

Sorry for all the technology questions, I feel so old, but I promise I am in my low 20's!! Just technologically behind!

Yes you can!

Waaaaaiiit.... What constitutes old....? :eyebrow:

That's awesome!! You just made my night!! Do you recommend using the program on an Ipad or laptop while in class?

I used onenote on a laptop the first year. I'm going to try out an Ipad this year. I'll let you know how it goes 🙂

If I recall correctly, you can. I never used the feature because I sat in the back. I think you can tag the lecture, so to speak, so that it links with certain sections of your notes too. I never got to try it out because I spilled water/gatorade on my PC and then switched to a Mac and just use Growly Notes if I want something similar.

Today I was thinking about moving to school, and I started wondering about my furniture situation.

What are you guys doing about furniture? U-hauling it/buying it when you get there/etc? If you're buying it, where are you buying it from?

Which reminds me, I should really start playing around with OneNote before school starts, since I think that's what I'll use as my primary note taking app.

Yeah. It's nice to figure out little things like how to import, how you want to organize, etc., before lecture starts. 🙂

In case anyone wants a starting point for a suggestion, the linked pics is how I set up OneNote. (I usually collapse down the main tool bar at the top along with the notebooks (left) and pages (right) so that most of the screen real estate is devoted to the notes, but I expanded them for the purposes of the first screen shot. I grabbed a second screen shot to show how it actually looks when I'm taking notes. Didn't want to just include them in this post because of size.)

Left side (Notebooks): By semester (Y1S1, Y1S2, etc.).
Top (Sections): Individual classes in each semester.
Right side (Pages): Individual lectures for each class.

Since you can give hierarchy to pages, for classes that have multiple exams I usually create a blank page labeled 'Exam 1' (etc) and then stack all the lectures for that exam under it. Then I can collapse it all down when we're past that and focus on Exam 2, etc. It looks like I've duplicated some lectures with a copy hierarchically underneath it (you'll see two Lecture 31s or something); where you see that is where the lecturer gave us written textual notes in addition to their presentation and I slurped both into OneNote.

I also tend to create a Syllabus page, Schedule page, etc depending on what they give us and suck those into OneNote in the appropriate Section as well, so that I have virtually everything in OneNote.

Frankly, the most useful trick I had to learn was to import a PDF or PPT and then, before making any notes on it, select all, right click, and then check 'Set Picture as Background'. That sets that entire lecture's worth of slides as the background so you can scribble on top, next to, whatever.

Someone asked about recording. You can record into OneNote. First year, I used to start my laptop recording and I just had the link to it at the top of that lecture's page. I found I never used them, though, so I quit doing it because it takes up a fair bit of disk space to record every lecture.

Anyway. Hope this helps give people some ideas for how they might like to organize it. Everyone's different, I imagine.

Got my apartment, found a wonderful stable to keep my horse and I think I found the perfect person to lease him. Finances are coming together and I have almost all of my books I need for first semester and so far I've only spent $60. I think I'm doing good.

I got a desk and bookshelf from a friend who went to undergrad at LSU, so they're already up there. My bed is coming with me in one trip on the family minivan (it's a twin, but my room is tiny so I don't mind opening up more space with that) and then I'm bringing suitcases and boxes in another minivan trip. My move is only about an hour away, though, so multiple trips won't be too much of a problem.

In other news, I really need to spend more time figuring out my tablet. I'm posting it on here in the hopes that it gives me the accountability to actually do it.

I thought there was no OneNote app for the ipad?

I used Notability on my ipad last semester and really liked it. It also has the ability to link the audio recording to typed notes which was really handy.

Thanks for posting this! I don't use OneNote but I love seeing how others organize their notes 🙂

I'm packing my life in a uhaul.

Ditto!

If it can't fit in my car, it does not come. This applies even though my parents help me with big moves, so my 6-seater chevy lumina has 4 spots taken up by passengers (me, mom, dad, cat).

I find that I'm kind of at an extreme end with how little I furnish my apartments. All I need is a chair and a bed, and for the rest, I just look out for freebies. I was proud of my last desk because I ordered something that came in a HUGE box so I cut a portion out for my legs and reinforced the top with more cardboard. It held all my books plus my laptop, and I never felt like it would collapse while I was writing 👍 Wasn't very pretty, though.

Oh, and I do always shell out money for my cat to have a nice tower of some sort. He usually owns the most expensive thing in the place besides my bed and laptop 🙄

I'm taking my bed and an old futon I have to use as a couch. I'm living alone with my posse of pets so any other furniture I need I plan on finding cheap on Craigslist once I get moved in (desk, kitchen table). I have a lot of plastic storage drawers that I plan to use for clothes. My nice (heavy) dressers are staying put in Wisconsin

Forgot to add, common room furniture (couch, TV we probably won't actually use, etc.) is already at the house/my housemate's, so I don't need to worry about that.

It was easier for me to just bring all my furniture back from my house by A&M to my parent's place. Gonna buy a new bed here and then lug it all to K-State. My parents want to come with to help me move and say goodbye, so all my stuff (including my car) will fit in my dad's trailer and we'll all drive together in the truck. Don't have too much furniture though, just stuff for my room. The rest of my old house and this new one, will be furnished by one of my roomies (the house owner).

Uhaul for me! My grandmother gifted me her leather couch, love seat, and chair + lamps to match ( aparently me moving and needing furniture is a great excuse for her to purchase all new living room furniture haha ) im basically bringing everything I own... my room is being turned into my younger sisters bedroom so everything must go 😱

16 days until my big move!!

My boyfriend and I are filling my car with our clothes and other belongings... We will be slowly buying all our furniture when we get up to Ohio 🙂 So, we will be camping in our apartment for a little while. I am actually quite excited for it haha

Columbus has great furniture for cheap on craigslist. So we will be combining craigslist and Ikea. Pinterest is my best friend, so I will be trying to cheaply make it look like the pinterest rooms haha But I am pretty excited to just finally have our own place. Even if its just him and I and a couple sleeping bags for a while, it will be OURS 😀 😀

When my now-husband and I first moved to NYC we didn't have much furniture and we slept on an air-mattress for the first month! I'd never want to do that now but it was fun at the time 😀

All I need luckily is a bed, dresser, desk and chair, and a bookcase. Most have to be purchased at school because my new room won't fit my current furniture.

Rabies vaccine #2 = Done! 😛

Everywhere I can get the rabies vax around here is about $100 more expensive than getting it at school, so I have to just hope it doesn't make me feel too terrible when I have to deal with classes. :scared:

Today I got blood drawn for the only blood test I need, and I get my third rabies vax tomorrow! Almost done!

Although my arm does hurt from the blood draw. Ice cream and chocolate will make that better, right?

I'm super worried that I won't make any friends in vet school. I'm shy and quiet and just generally pretty awkward (I think). I sort of know one guy in my class because we went to junior high and high school together but I'm not sure if he remembers me. Tomorrow we're meeting up and I'm pretty stressed about it. At least we're meeting at my work so I'll have my dogs to talk about. The downside about meeting at the shelter is that I'll be gross after cleaning 50 kennels. Seriously one should not be this worried about meeting new (and some not so new) people.

I'm really worried about making friends, too. I had a great group in undergrad, but I kind of fell into it by accident, so if something like that doesn't happen again...

I'm really worried about this too. I'm really, really awkward and weird, and while I know plenty of people exist who would want to be my friend I am not sure many of them will be in my class. I usually pretend to be fairly normal when I'm around strangers and people I've just met, and in the workplace, and I'm worried that people will think that's what I'm really like and then when I try to hang out with them they will say "oh lordy is that what you're really like? Get away."

I'm sorry you're worried too. I hope your meet-up is fun!

I'm worried about this as well. I'm also quiet and shy when I'm around people I don't know. Often, people misinterpret this as me being stuck up. I'm going to be in my late 20s when I start school and I'm scared that the younger students won't want to be friends with me due to the age difference or think I'm weird if I try to hang out with them (which sounds ridiculous when I actually type it but it's a legit concern of mine).

People think I'm stuck up because I am quiet too. Hoping I can fake some outgoing ness at first!

I am worried about this too... I have been on an athletic team from the time I was 6 years old, until I finished my senior year of athletics in college. So I always had "built-in" friends I guess. This will be the first time in my life Ill be alone. I'm stressing about it lol I am pretty awkward and shy too, until I am really comfortable with you.

My goal is to be more outgoing. OSU has a networking sit-down dinner with new students and professors that we were allowed to sign up for during orientation. I would usually NEVER sign up for it, but I figured it would be my first step towards being more outgoing. So I signed up! Now I am freaking out hahah I was also going to try to meet people before classes, since I will be there 3 weeks before we start. Here's to hoping I can make some friends 🙂

In the same boat here, too! I am worried I won't find any nerd friends who are as obsessive as the same fandoms as I am and my friends are.

i'm jealous of all of you 🙂 it's a huge undertaking obviously but one i hope to do in a couple years! 🙂

I plan on using DropBox for all my vet school notes and stuff. Mostly as a backup in the unlikely event that my brand new laptop decides to do a nosedive in the middle of the year. Since it will be mostly Word or OneNote documents, there should hopefully be plenty of space for me (maybe?). Which reminds me, I should really start playing around with OneNote before school starts, since I think that's what I'll use as my primary note taking app.

I have a Google Docs account that I really only use for group projects. Google Docs just feels a little too clumsy for everyday use, but maybe that's just me. I haven't touched my account in several years though . . . there are some interesting things in there, I'm sure.

I use Evernote for all my lists. Even stuff like recipes and grocery lists are great in Evernote, because I can check things off as I go along. I have the app on my phone, which is great because I usually think of things to add to the list when I'm out doing something completely unrelated. Since I always have my phone on me, I can just add things to the list right away instead of waiting until I get home, by which time I will have completely forgotten what it was that I needed to do. Plus Evernote automatically syncs to my Kindle, my laptop, and my online account so I can access the lists from anywhere I need to.

What did vet students ever do without technology? 😱

I LOVE Evernote!

I....feel like a weirdo now.... I'm very kind of in your face. Very "Hi I'm Abney! We're best friends now!"

Bahahaha I'm very much the same.. Pretty loud and outgoing...

But I'm still worried about making friends- sometimes being loud/ outgoing is intimidating to others :/

Maybe to some. I like meeting talkative and outgoing people, it takes the pressure off and relaxes me; I am more than happy to listen more than talk. I'm kinda shy and quiet around people until I get to know them.

I've also never lived with girls before. When my previous roommate found out I'd be sharing a bathroom with one of them he told me to guard my counter space with my life because it will be a war of attrition

i get so pissed whenmy husband leaves anything on the bathroom counter... he is a man therefore needs no counter space! :meanie:

Hahaha that will definitely be interesting! Go ahead and designate boundaries on the counter before its too late lol

Indeed, that's a good idea. I'm sure I have less stuff and things to do, I can deal with less space, that's fair. But the small space that is mine shall be taken from me over my dead body.

um, I am so excited to have counter space around my sink. this will be the first time I have had any of any significant size (and especially not shared) and it is something I'm kind of excited about, so... true story there.
but I would still leave you your appropriately-decided amount of space because I'm not obnoxious like that.

It's the opposite for me. Though I'm fine with less space (last house I rented didn't have much ) at my parent's house I'm quite spoiled. My bathroom here has a counter with two sinks all for me :meanie:
