Class of 2017.... how you doin?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
"Freeze" day for our first day of class! Not a whole lot of snow but MAN is it cold out there.
On a sadder note, just said goodbye to my fiance. He got a call yesterday that he's being transferred to south Texas for work. He's on his way home now to pack up his things and leave for TX 🙁 They gave no indication of how long he has to work down there so I have no clue when I'll see him again. Sometimes I hate his job....

Edit: No school again tomorrow!

So we had a pocket pet lab last week and I've been dying to come on SDN and post about it.

We have a school hamster, chinchilla, gerbils and guinea pigs and we rotate through weeks and look after them for the semester. I was originally concerned with taking the animals home given I live in a small apartment with a cat...but they're changing it this year so they're kept at school.

Never had any kind of small pet like this, so I'm so excited!

PBL is really fun! It's all we have the first 2 weeks of class, and I'm really enjoying puzzling with my group through the differentials and going down to the clinics (mostly just to get forms, but occasionally to ask clinicians something).

Finally attacked my calendar with my schedule and coloured pens.

This semester is going to suck.

Who puts the Anatomy/Histology midterm and the Physiology midterm both on the day before Reading Week? Those are the two classes I need to work the most on....😢

I also have a feeling I won't be enjoying Immunology much. Prof seems great, but the material....ugh.

So we started Cardiology, Respiration and Reproduction. Cardio and Respiration are taught be awesome professors and are really interesting. The main repro professor is Polish and vagina has now gained a R and is pronounced as Virr-gene-a. She said it so many times we were giggling up a storm.

Our repro prof is South African and I love listening to him talk 😍 He's also hilarious by his own right, but add that accent and it's downright ridiculous!

First day of second semester starts tomorrow. I should probably start getting some binders together….

Anyone else have issues getting back to school? I was going from Florida to California and couldn't leave Florida because the planes that fly into MCO come from New York, and couldn't leave there! Very frustrating missing three days of school, and battling the airlines while traveling with a pet.

Yeah...my school started 1:00 Tuesday. I tried getting out of Kentucky Monday but no dice. Tried again Tuesday morning on a flight that would give me an extra hour and a half before school started. Which instead had me sneaking into class at 3:30...

Some people went to the BCS game on Monday in California and didn't even plan to make it back until Tuesday night. I felt like all the professors thought I had gone to the game and I was like...butbutbut I was just stuck in Kentucky the whole time!

Not really looking forward to this block too much. From the second years, they say this is one of the toughest ones. Hopefully it will go by fast- especially since the first week is almost done!

Eouch, I'm super lucky my home with all my family and extended family is a mere 45 minute drive from school.

So I'm kind of all😍 about cardio.

First exam of the semester is on Friday. It only covers 7 lectures worth of material, but it's for immunology 😱

We have a quiz and 3 exams this week... eek!! Two of which are Large Animal Anatomy (Practical and written).

not gonna lie, I saw the number 3 and was like WTF, I thought it was 2!!!! then I realized anatomy is both written and practical lol... jeez, im already worn out and today is only monday!

OMG... the guy who teaches histology makes me want to explode. So some serious stuff went down and we lost our Histology professor last semester. Google if you wish to know more. Anyhow we have this new professor who is teaching the histology portion of every single class. He give a lecture first each lecture is 50 minutes but he has some 80+ slides to get through. He always starts the class with how he is going to run the lab. You run it the same way all the time and we've had you for every class! Get on with it. So he blows through these 80 slides and at the end goes. "Wooo! We made it!" No digbat we didn't make it as most of us are still on slide 20. His 80+ slides contain maybe 10 slides that have actually histology pictures. The rest are schematics or charts. He also feels the need to go over gross anatomy or physiology with us too. Sorry no the cardiology professor has already covered that. You're histology!!! Stick with the histology.

Then that leads me to the lab portion. Where he gives you an hour to familiarize yourself with the slides. That's right an hour to look at slides that I have no idea what they are. So I get to teach myself wrong for an hour. Then he will take one slide go over it and then gives us an additional 10 minutes to check it out on our own. Rinse and repeat. I have walked out of every lab early this semester thus far. It drives me nuts.

Oh and did I mention he has a tick when he lectures. He smacks his lips. OMG! :boom:

Our cardiology professor said differnt instead of different... so annoying!

Dang y'all wasted no time and offered no comfort on my current histology lab issues. lol

Haha. Everyone loves drama.

We all have bad teachers here and there, but it sounds like you got a special one. I've had 'too many slides' person, and I've had 'crappy lab' person, and I've had 'annoying tic/phrase' person, but never all three at once. Good luck.

I have an exam tomorrow and two Thursday. So of course instead of studying I went to the grocery store, bought way too much food, came home and put one meal in the crock pot and made fantastic potato leek soup. I call today a success. Now maybe I should get to studying...

I'm assuming you didn't come to afternoon classes bc we were definitely still sitting miserably in Nutrition when you posted this lol

There is a girl in my class who asks 4+ questions in class during the lecture. I can't handle it anymore!! I think I'm going to have to turn this into a drinking game.

I think every class gets stuck with at least one of those...
I don't have a problem with people asking questions--most of the time it helps my learning too. The problem with this particular student is that she asks a zillions questions in every class, which causes the professor to not be able to finish that lecture's material that day, and we get super behind..

we have one girl that asks questions about horses just to make herself look like she knows ish about horses.. just the sound of her voice drives me insane.

We have two or three of those in our class...and they're not even helpful or insightful questions. Mostly "Can you repeat what you just said" or something completely unrelated from the lecture material. They do know that class is being recorded, right? Or you can record it yourself...
Really drives me bonkers when they continue to ask questions when class ended 5 minutes ago and the other 160 or so of us are having to sit and wait for you to finish....Sorry, but I'm ranting because this has happened at the end of almost every class this week! and its the same people every class!

So today has been a mixed bag. Physio was a total cluster as our prof was a bit off his game; I was incredibly lucky that the immuno quiz that everyone except me knew was happening didn't actually count for points, and I am quite excited that I am signed up for intramural softball and actually got out my glove, bat and whiffle balls to begin practicing as I haven't played in 15 years. I need some work, but appear to have the basics still intact. Cardio level is pathetic, as is throwing arm stamina, but luckily I have a month to whip myself back into some semblance of a player. 🙂

YES! When class goes even a minute over I start to freak out because my bladder is about |-this-| big and I've had about |--------------this--------------| much coffee!

I am currently sitting with my PBL group literally just wasting time because we have to meet with our facilitator but the coordinator won't get back to us so we can't do anything about the case. :lame:

Hahahahahahaha.

Also, as Kpow knows, anatomy written and practical exams today. I'm already drunk in celebration. By myself.
