Class of 2017.... how you doin?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I'm assuming rabies vaccine...Our class started our 1st shot today too.

So glad I got mine done over the summer because its A) almost $500 cheaper and B)I had almost every reaction on the list and would have not to able to go to school for a few days or study/take my anatomy exam Friday. Here's hoping my titer's are good for 4th year!

Haha yes the vaccine. It was significantly cheaper through school so I'm glad I put it off all these years.

I was worried about reactions but I just have a sore arm. Didn't keep me from the gym!

I will be getting my rabies vaccine done soonish.... hopefully in the next week or so. Much cheaper to get it done in the UK than in the US. Only about $240 here, some GP's will even do them for free if they are for school.... Hoping I won't have any crazy weird reactions.

Does anyone have a favourite toxicology book they use? This block is super tox heavy and I love the small animal tox book (Peterson) I'm using, but I don't have one for large animals -- Gupta is okay but not as complete as I'd like.

For those of you that own....do you find shooting things to be good stress relief? I think it would be a good outlet and boy do I need one....

So maybe I want to buy something when I'm done this unrestricted course. My family would crap their pants, but it would be fun....

I enjoy it so I guess you could say it's stress relieving because I'm having fun. But I don't find it to be as stress relieving as beating the crap out of stuff, which is why I like my martial arts classes so much. 😀

Actually last time I went it was slightly stress-inducing because ammo was so unbelievably expensive. 9mm had just started reappearing in our area at that time and I paid over $60 for 100 rounds. Every time I pulled the trigger it was like "There goes a dollar. And another dollar. And another dollar." My bf likes to call it "turning money into noise."

Hmmm yes, I need to go take a look at the costs of ammo and such. There's Bass Pro, but I think that's about it around here.

And I'd have to store at the range or a club or something too....

Boo.

Beating the crap out of stuff sounds fun! 🙂

If you're just looking to burn ammo in the range and not actually carrying for self-defense, .22 is usually pretty cheap. Unfortunately it's outrageously priced and nigh impossible to get in the States right now thanks to all the panic, but the situation may be different in Canada.

Yeah, burning ammo pretty much. Carrying anywhere is out of the question here. Even the regulations for storing at your place make it next to impossible for immediate self defense from what I've read...never mind the permit you need to transport from your house to the range.

Such is the way in Canadia

Thanks for the recommendation! I shall look at .22's and see what there is! I don't much care the kind, just want something to fire. 🙂

I want to go do this tonight! Must...study....instead....

I have something I could send you tomorrow - send me a PM and remind me and I will see. I enjoyed our tox class a lot.

Spent most of the evening after class coloring and decorating little paper elephants for open house this weekend. 😀

Sometimes I really just want to move to Mexico and mix drinks for the rest of my life.

Why couldn't I be happy with the simple life? What about a nice 9-5 boring, office job. I really wish I wanted (and would be happy with) that on days like today.

Been thinking a lot about that lately... If I had a clue what I'd do otherwise and know I wouldn't regret it for ever I would. I really want to be in this field but the now sucks and I'm real friggin scared about the future.

I feel a little relieved that I'm not the only one.

I have a friend that went into accounting. Spent only 4 years in school, just got their CA, making a **** ton of money with a new condo downtown, etc. I am so ridiculously jealous right now that it worries me.

Even without a fancy pants corporate job, how nice would it be to go to work, do your work, come home and do what you want? Spend your weekends doing what you want? Have the time to enjoy life a little.

I'm hoping I just need an outlet and breaking things will help me feel better. Shooting things, punching things, smashing things....some sort of destruction. I am going to march my butt to Bass Pro on Saturday after the licensing exam to look at rifles. Then when the paperwork comes back, I'm buying one. I feel like this is a mid-life crisis.

So received an email tonight to my school email address and realized in the "To:" list that my name next to my email address is listed with my future married name! How do they know? And how do I fix this? I'm a little freaked out...

So I finally got my butt back on SDN after a nine month or so absence (I never meant to be gone that long...), and I've only been back for a week and I'm already starting to get addicted to checking it all the time again... what can I say? This semester's been kinda slow for me so far. Bad things tend to happen when I have too much time on my hands... (not that being on SND is bad 😛) Didn't realize how much I missed it until I started reading this thread and saw all my fellow 2017ers 🙂

I KNOW that I have an exam at 7am tomorrow, but for some reason I just can't study... God knows I'm going to be asleep by 11.

I can't believe you guys have 7 am exams. Our earliest is 9 (rarely 8, mostly in first year). That would make me very unhappy (and cranky). Lol.

I couldn't force myself to study for our exam tomorrow, either, Wildcat- so don't feel bad. I spent the latter part of my evening playing Mass Effect 3 and watching Bob's Burgers. About to go to bed here shortly. This exam was supposed to be Wednesday, but got rescheduled due to our snow day. I hate 7am exams -_- I feel like a zombie since I'm not waking up any earlier than I have to (even if I have to sacrifice my morning shower).

The only thing that snow buried more than my car was my productivity.

Speak for yourself 😛 My shower is like my coffee in the morning. I need it or I'm a zombie- you should know xD

Hey guys,

What resources do you use for Immunology? This stuff is going way over my head because I didn't take anything like it in undergrad. My prof is in the middle of co-writing a text as he doesn't like any that are out there.....but I need a book or something else besides lecture notes to learn this.

So...anyone also new to Immunology? What do you use as supplemental? 🙂

For a really basic explanation of things, there is this book:

http://www.amazon.com/How-Immune-Sy...=sr_1_2?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1392048340&sr=1-2

For something more in depth that could be used as a course book, Tizard is a common one:

http://www.amazon.com/Veterinary-Im...=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1392048430&sr=1-1

But there is a lot of overlap with that and some of the other books, like Janeway. Maybe whatever is the cheapest. Or try checking a book out from the undergrad library or whatnot.

Some are available as PDFs.

There are some good youtube tutorials if you search immunology made simple/easy.

Good luck!

Kahn Academy on Youtube is a good launch point.

Thanks guys! I really appreciate it. 🙂

I'm loving Path, not so much Immuno since I feel lost all the time. It helps having cool profs though.

If you have any burning immuno questions, feel free to shoot me a message. I really enjoyed immuno, and while I have probably forgotten some of it, I am sure I can look at notes and be able to explain it again. 🙂

There is a ton of immunology in pathology. Perhaps if you can mentally put immuno into a path context (this happens then this happens then this happens which causes this gross/microscopic lesion), it might help it stick? I love path. It relates everything to everything else.

I have all of those listed as PDFs, I believe 🙂
How the Immune System works is gold. I took immunology in undergrad and made a pretty good grade in it but that was almost four years ago and it's easy to forget. When something in Tizard is over my head, I rely on that.

You can PM me questions too, if you want. I had immuno in undergrad and I'm taking it again now (final tomorrow actually), and our current lecturer has some great (and often funny) analogies that might help you understand something.

we start immuno in 2 weeks....im gonna have to remember all the helpful advice/ offers of help on this thread!

While we're on the subject, does anyone have any useful websites for goat/horse dissection? I was using this awesome website: http://www.cvmbs.colostate.edu/vetneuro/VCA3/vca.html for dog dissection and I found their quiz section really helpful since I learn well by trial and error. I've been looking for something similar for the horse, but haven't had much luck.

Immuno's one of those tricky subjects in which everything is so interrelated that it's hard to understand one part when you haven't learned the other parts yet. It makes a lot more sense once you get to the end and can connect everything together. Anyways, I thought I'd suggest the Kuby Immunology book for those looking for an additional resource (it's a little less detailed than Janeway, supposedly). We used that in undergrad and I think I recall it being helpful... (but that was 5 years ago now, so hard so say for certain...) This video is supposedly a good overview/introduction according to our professor, although I confess I haven't watched it (it's almost 12 minutes long).

Now, anyone know how to make me motivated to study for my repro exam tomorrow? 😱

That awful feeling when you do worse on a quiz than you had thought. This semester is is really getting me down. I think I need sun or some thing other than snow that doesn't cancel class!

Deciding to be more interested in Westminster than studying for my exam and quiz tomorrow. Oh well...

Yep, I thought I didn't miss any, but low and behold...

Anatomy is weighing on me right now. I think I've got the written portion ok, but looking at old tests for lab, I be in trouble.

Yeah I'm pretty terrified about the practical portion.

Today was a glorious day at AVC! We started with our prof putting on the Canada vs USA game on the projector (we won 3-2 🙂. Today was the day everyone was exchanging their valentines cards and I found candy grams and cards in my mailbox with awesomely nerdy sayings. Then at lunch we filmed the rest of our scenes for our You Tube music video parody and we ended the day with going to the campus pub and having some cold beers! Not to mention, we are now off until Tuesday! That's 5 glorious days I don't have to be in class!

With the ref ruling on one of the goals, I am glad I wasn't in the U.S. watching the game.....:scared:

Rocked out my exam and quiz today!! Now I just need to so well on Nutrition Friday... Is it March yet?

I had immuno in undergrad as well which was pretty helpful..especially since immuno was often pushed to the side with anatomy and physiology taking precedence. But I was also going to recommend the Kuby immunology book! I bought one of the Veterinary Immunology textbooks that was recommended from a local used bookstore b/c they had it available for super cheap and I found that it was WAY too generalized and didn't explain ANYTHING! I found myself digging through my old Kuby immunology book if I ever needed a better explanation. It's a great resource if you're struggling to straighten everything out, even though it's not a veterinary-geared book. Good luck!!

Got the second rabies vaccine yesterday - and now I have a target lesion at the injection site 😵

I have never 'liked' school and I hate studying. I don't know what has possessed me to pursue three degrees.
