Class of 2017.... how you doin?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I thought second year was massively easier than first year. Everyone is different though.
For the most part, I thought first year was a cake walk. I stressed myself out because I almost never studied, but that's my own fault. Here, our schedule is what's killer. There is A LOT expected of us this semester and it is WAY intense. And this coming from someone who usually has an "eh, it'll work out" attitude. Not to mention the fact that we have 2 diagnostic challenges that each take up an entire week, but we still have to fit those 2 weeks of info into the semester. Holy moly.

Again, everyone is different. So generalizations of saying that if people struggle first year they will be in shock second year, is not accurate. Or fair. Actually it is kind of mean and degrading and people that don't know better might worry prematurely when they don't need to.

Hmm ok. I respectfully disagree.

And besides. I NEVER said I say this to their faces. So I'm allowed to think it and joke about it with people that are NOT in first year 😉

@DVMDream on further contemplation I can see what you mean. You are right and it could be taken badly. I was thinking about it in the context of my school and what I have seen peers here go through, but that isn't the same for everyone. Though joking about it releases some steam for me 😛

Same here. I cruised through second year.
I don't see the material being so hard... yet... 😏 Though I think OVERALL that is indicative of vet school. This is stuff we like (ok ok maybe maybe not all of it) right?!?!!? I hope so at least.

I'm just like, "wait, we have HOW MUCH due?!?! Tomorrow?!?!?!" lol

I get it. Venting is needed at times, but can be done without assuming things of other people is all.

I know at my school I struggled first year while many of my friends breezed through while second year I did great and they struggled. We just all helped each other with subjects each of us found difficult and it all worked out.

You are definitely right, and that is a great attitude. Sorry if I sounded like a poop head 🙂

I lol. First year was easy. If people squirm in first year, woo boy are they in for a surprise this semester.

I think this assumption is a bad one to make and can make people feel horrible about themselves - why would you want to do that? Every vet school is different, curriculums are different, and crap every person is different in the way they learn. So to say that first year is easy and that for anyone who felt otherwise that they are in for a shock - then you are making an arse out of you not me.... (ASSUME) - because TBH everyone has different strengths and different interests - so one subject might be a piece of cake to me, but hell for you - should I laugh at you? serious question.... just think about it - it is fine to vent.. but think of it in the context of this forum and who is seeing it... we can't all be anatomy geniuses or perfect in physiology or pathology - the list goes on... so to brag about something being so super easy makes someone who struggled in that subject feel extra crappy about it

Ehh I feel like our second year is set up with clinical relevance as the main priority which makes it easier to pay attention to.

Yeah I do agree with this.

I'm just... not a very organized person and this semester requires that of me and it's SO HARD! I'm totally procrastinating right now actually. Sigh

Yeah I am watching the True Blood finale whilst 'reviewing' cardio.

Our second year is generally considered the hardest, with fall being worse than spring. I think it's mostly the sheer amount of classes we're taking simultaneously, and the fact that they go on so long instead of doing one class for a few weeks and then it ends and another one starts like in first year. It's just kind of harder to keep up with it (I say as I blatantly don't study).

The general consensus I have heard here at Mizzou is that year 2 is more difficult, but you have more time bc you aren't spending 12 hr/week in anatomy lab so most people survive... But, the *now* 3rd years lost 3 people the last block of their second year so  .. It sucks to be losing people that late in the game, especially since after that point they have 8 weeks of classes left and then they hit clinics starting in October.

Oh that is really awful 🙁

I got to monitor a guinea pig for his neuter today! He was actually a perfect patient, which was nice. Watched a ton of rabbit spay/neuters as well so that was cool since it was a little different from a dog and cat.

My digestive system is totally back to normal today after 11 days, but the very mild headcold that's been hanging around for the past 7 days decided to get worse today to the point where it is no longer a mild annoyance and actually is requiring drugs. And I'm feeling really guilty because I probably spread my germs to a whole bunch of first years at orientation today. I'm really not ready to go back to school next week. Could I just have one more week off to figure out where my immune system is hiding and perhaps unpack my bags and clean up my apartment (because lets be honest, if I don't get it done before school starts, my place will be a disaster area until Christmas)? I feel like this is a bad omen for the year to come... aka, the side effects of overcommitting myself.

Lots if booze tonight at a good friends bday dinner. Great way to end the first week if year 2 !! Time for bed.

Welp, after skipping classes this entire week to finish my research proposal that was due today, I know what I will be doing this weekend. :grumpy: But at least it is a 3day weekend and I have stocked the booze to help with the situation. 👍
Update:

Made it through 2 pharm lectures, a bit of infectious disease review, then it was 2:30 and the day has fallen to light snacking and heavy drinking. Oh, and I will hope to take a nap before the Cowboy season opener against #1 FL. I feel accomplished as I watch Caddyshack and pass time with SDN and whatever random question popping into my head being answered with the good ol' world wide interwebz. Saturday... check.

SO glad we have a 3 day weekend. I'm petsitting today and tomorrow a house full of dogs and cats (luckily I can bring my two dogs, otherwise, I wouldn't be pet sitting). They pay really well, but it is a pretty stressful house with 5 dogs total and 3 cats. Trying to take a nap here was a failure, and I'm attempting to get /some/ studying done so I don't have to do too much on our day off.
Otherwise, week one went by and this block shouldn't be /too/ awful.

I just started pet sitting to make some money on the side, using sites like Rover and Dog Vacay, and wow. No one wants you to bring your own animals and no one wants you to bring their animal to your place. I thought I'd be at a disadvantage only offering to pet sit in someone else's residence, but that's definitely not the case.
That being said, I'm pretty sure I'm the only one not watching football today.

I am not watching football. But I also do not give a damn about football, so that is why. I'd rather watch a marathon of some awesome TV show that sucks you in and you can't escape from, even if you try.

I've pet sat for these people twice before (one being for almost 10 days). Both are vets (one of them is a neuro resident at the school). It is a great money maker on the side, I totally agree. They pay quite well, otherwise, I wouldn't be over here. It is hard to find people who will let you bring your own pets, I agree. So, I don't pet sit /too/ often. I'm going to check out those sites, though! Thanks!
PS- I'm not watching or having anything to do with the football game today, either. Just myself, all the animals, doing some studying, and marathoning adventure time (I kind of have a problem xD)

Any time 🙂 I bounce from east to west coast and Rover tends to be more eastern, and Dog Vacay is more western.. but I still have accounts on both!

I wonder which one would be best for the midwest? Lol

I don't understand how a professor can be so clueless about how disorganized and confusing his lectures are (after attempting to make them clearer due to bad feedback)? It's not a complicated topic. It's really just regurgitating facts about viruses. So why do we go from talking about cows to horses to sheep back to horses then cows, but comparing it to pigs the whole time (as if we are all very familiar with pig diseases like he is) but not actually teaching us about these pig diseases he keeps referring to because we'll learn about them in swine class later (but he still wants us to be familiar with them for the exam). And not including standardized information on all viruses. I thought the second semester of this nonsense might be better after all the improvements they tried to make. But no, it's exactly the same, except that we all have a lot less patience for it now.

Got another job pet sitting this weekend and my god, the dog's nails were AWFUL. Curled over, starting to dig into his pads... Wasn't really sure how to handle the situation, to be honest. He was also intact, had tons of mucopurulent discharge OU (KCS anyone?), skin fold dermatitis, and he was blind and deaf so he walked around randomly peeing HUGE volumes of stuff. The volume of his urine was probably so large because he drank a whole bowl of water every 30 minutes. Poor guy. His sister wasn't as bad, but she had a lot of loose skin on her belly and dragged it through the puddle she made when she peed =/

I was ready for the two exams this week, and even for the parasitology quiz on Friday, but now we're having another parasitology quiz this week. And it's tomorrow (the day of the pharmacology exam I'm already really worried about), on a ton of material we're about to learn today and which I will have zero time to study because I need to work on pharm.

Ugh I wish we would have had parasitology quizzes! Not on the same day as pharm exams obviously, but that would have helped me keep on top of the material way better last semester.

Guess you earned your monies! I would spend the entire time worrying about all the wrong things you mentioned. I take it they haven't been to the vet in a while? 🙁

Luckily today's got cancelled. But unfortunately my brain is now firmly in Friday mode and I've spent the last 3 hours doing technically-productive-but-not-studying things.

Today was crazy, so I have accidentally ingested more vodka than I intended jabbering with my mum. Now I need to get myself together to get a small clin Path exercise submitted that's due before tomorrow and prepare for a clin Anatomy lab tomorrow. Jeesh. Don't know about the three exams for next week...

Oh man, I'm glad I checked this. Totally forgot about clin path. Had my communications lab today so I want to guzzle a bunch of vodka...

I'm not sure... It was interesting, they said they'd just moved to the area and yet they'd been there long enough for the house to get absolutely filthy. Whenever I dog sit, I always ask for emergency and regular vet information, god forbid something happens. They said they didn't have a vet, weren't interested in discussing it and to call them if anything happened. Which is really funny because they asked me to send them pictures and updates throughout the stay and responded to one text the entire time...
On the bright side, I'm dog sitting the cutest 3 month old Golden Retriever on Saturday!
