I have not seen your homework yet, sadly. But "purple headed love monster" or whatever it was makes me confident it will be as amazing as Peter and Batmen.

I should probably not invite my more conservative family members to the ceremony. They will probably be alarmed by your creativity.

I approve. I haven't had a chance to grade it, so there's always a chance it's not as great as I thought hahaha.

I've seen her work via her writing of the purple headed love monster so it's pretty great.

Same. At least for anatomy. I have so much more to get through for our test on Tuesday and I'm way behind in all other classes so I'm freaking out.

I think we both need to breathe and break for a bit.

Exactly how I am feeling with my two microanatomy exams, endocrine exam, and developmental anatomy exam that I have this coming week back to back
 
Nothing gets your blood pumping and motivated to study like your roommate's (who is gone for the weekend) estranged mother (whom roommate has restraining order against, which you don't know until after the fact) showing up. Craziest half hour study break so far in vet school.
 
Our physiology exam today not only had a box for the exams to be placed in, but also had a box for complaints, a box for skit ideas (we do a faculty/student skit night at the end of the semester), and a box for bad jokes. Wonder if my half page of cow-related puns will get any bonus points...

Just feel like a f****** idiot all the time and it sucks. Studied my butt off for two quizzes we had today and pretty sure it was for nothing and I got absolutely wrecked. I know I'm not stupid but vet school sure likes to prove me wrong on that one. I'm just drained and I miss home a lot and am tired of it all right now. Glad the weekend is almost here.

If it's any consolation, you're not alone. I can definitely relate. It's hard not to feel disappointed when you dump your time into studying and it doesn't seem to pay off. Just try to remember that not every grade you get is an accurate reflection of your academic ability, and I feel that can be especially true in vet school.

There's also the whole 'study less, do better' thing that happens to everyone at least once in vet school :laugh:

I am sorry. Everyone has their bad exam days. Having a bad exam day does not make you stupid in the slightest. If it did, that would mean all vets/vet students are stupid, and we're all too smart for that. I feel like the general consensus among people at my school has been everyone feeling drained, so you are not alone.

And the weekend is so close! So close!

Definitely know you aren't alone. I would be lucky if I got 10/30 on the anatomy quiz. While I will admit physiology is more my subject, I found the material for the quiz to be grossly unfair. To tell us it covers 230 pages and then the quiz only the first 50 or so....😡

You're definitely not alone, aloha. Going into our DR to study for anatomy, I can't help but feel like a complete idiot a lot of the time... it's so hard for me to focus in there with 130 students + professors and all of the noise and formaldehyde that comes with it (didn't bother me as much with the small animals for some reason) and, really, the material just seems to come much more easily to my classmates. We've got our first test today so I guess it'll serve as an indicator of whether or not I've actually learned things.

I know it's not much in the way of consolation, but you're far from the only person struggling to stay afloat. I'm not sure what your schedule for next week looks like in terms of tests/quizzes, but try to carve out some "me time" this weekend and go do something fun to take your mind off of things a bit. *hugs*

I feel it. A lot of my classmates are in a similar boat, too. Hang on, friend - they wouldn't have accepted you if they didn't think you could do it. ♥

Someone recently told my husband that students feel like they know nothing the first two years, then third year is a bit better. But then, we go to clinics and feel like we know nothing again. So, basically it's a big cycle of feeling ignorant. Believe it or not, that made me feel better. I often feel like an idiot - study hard and don't get results, wonder how I got in. Hearing someone say it's normal was oddly comforting. Hopefully, reading that it's normal will help you.
Hope things get better.
 
****'s about to get real in a week and a half. There's so many organisms and material between Neurobiology, Parasit, Bact, and Viro it's starting to get overwhelming. I know I'm not the only one feeling this way, but wow.
 
Got a 56% on the lecture part of my large animal anatomy test. Did better on the lab practical, but still. Eff this. :bang:

It's so interesting how different schools do things; we don't take parasit, bact or virology until second year here. And neuroscience is an elective here, which is kinda weird, but I'm glad I don't have to take it. What we went over of the nervous system in anatomy was confusing enough. 😛

Yeah, we don't do really anything pathologic until next year. My grandpa asked me if I could transfer to CSU and I had to explain to him that it would be really hard/expensive to because I would probably have to repeat the year.

T-minus one week till our midterms. Does anyone have a good way to story for the arrow questions? Like a dog is shot with an arrow at the 5th intercostal space and punctures into the heart, what structures does the arrow go through?

What are you needing for the arrow - a list, a visual? I still have my notes.

And that ties in beautifully to the comments about how different things are across schools. We had the arrow questions for the thoracic cavity last semester, like maybe first half of last semester. We're doing large animal anatomy now, but we're also doing comparative of the heads, including canine, for this particular round of exams. I was rather grateful for all the lovely mnemonics for the cranial nerves that ya'll shared a couple of months back.

I'm at this odd point where I should be panicking but am somewhat apathetic about the looming Anatomy exams. I am completely unprepared and may fail the practical (cramming, cramming, cramming), but I'm so tired from the past two weeks of exam-packed fun that I don't have the energy to panic - yet. I broke my rule about skipping class and missed four hours of lecture this week to study for other exams, and now I'm looking at basically living at school for the next 96 hours. The thing that's keeping me going is that a friend is coming in town for work next week, and I'm going to meet up with her in New Orleans that weekend. The two-plus weeks of exams will be over, for better or worse, and I'll actually be able to relax a little.
 
Oh, I also forgot about Biology of Disease, Nutrition and Metabolism, and Food Animal Production and safety. Those classes too 😱

I'm just trying to figure out the best way to study for it. I was trying to go from superficial to deep, but that wasn't working for me at all. Now I'm going from the deepest structures to superficial and radiate outward. This already feels better, though. I was just wondering how other people prepared for these types of questions. We're doing the thorax of the dog, cow, horse, pig, and cat.

Accurate. I'm at a point now in fourth year where I feel totally groovy. I'm seeing patients, I'm diagnosing, I'm treating... then something will happen and I'll feel like a total idiot that doesn't know anything again. It's cyclical, but you get better at leaving the idiot phase over time.

Do you guys get much clinical skills in first year? Like our upcoming clinical skills labs are avian species handling, large and small animal bandaging, taking radiographs, large and small animal reproduction, necropsy safety etc. It's super nice having one day a week where we get to play with animals and learn basic skills instead of sitting in lecture! But I know of the Canadian schools we are very unique in that regard, so not sure how it compares to American schools.

Last semester we had physical diagnosis, which consisted of 9 labs (used to be 10 but there were issues with the teaching birds so no more avian handling lab). 2 dog, 2 cat, 1 small ruminants, 2 bovine, 2 equine. Basically physical exam and stuff on each species.

We also have clinical experience weeks starting next semester. So this semester is the only one in the curriculum without any hands on stuff.
 
Haha, we just had 2 quizzes that included puncture wounds. A gunshot perpendicular to the 7th intercoastal space and a few inches above the coastocondral junction and what it hit, and then a cat that got shot with a crossbow bolt through the chest and lived.

Yeah, these will be half of our anatomy midterm next Friday. The second years have told me they suck.
 
Ugh, those arrow/puncture wound questions suck so hard. We had a bunch last semester during our viscera unit. I feel you guys.

No. 🙁 Last semester we had basically zero clinical skills/live animal stuff in the curriculum, but a lot of the clubs have great wet labs, and we're highly encouraged to go hang out in the teaching hospital. This semester we have some live horse palpation and ultrasound stuff, and maybe some other little things that I'm forgetting. They're planning to add more clinical skills stuff in first and second year within the next year or two, but overall K-State is very traditional.
 
Also we've never had any of those puncture wound questions! Last semester we occasionally had anatomy practical questions like "what layer is this pin passing through first?" but that's it.
 
I don't recall those particular anatomy questions, but next quarter is Clinical Anatomy so perhaps that's where they'll throw those in.

I also feel like an idiot often. I have friends that don't study near what I do, and while sometimes I make better grades, other times we make the same or I do worse. It's like "why am I wasting my time?"
 
Not sure if this has been asked, but do you guys have plans to do something over summer that's veterinary or research related? I want to do something but can't find anything that's for me.

I'm trying to get a lab animal externship at school for the summer. Alot of people are applying for summer research positions, banfield/blue pearl stuff, we have a few summer things in our hospital that takes students
 
Hi all! I am wondering if any of you are considering transferring, or know someone who has? Basically I do not feel comfortable here at my school, feel like I don't fit in with my classmates and all that. There has also been some family stuff back home going on so I am considering transferring to my in-state, which is UMN. Their application asks why I am considering transfer, but I don't know what to put other than my family situation that I should be home for. UMN also has access to a few more resources like the big raptor center, zoos, etc that I would like to have access too. Anyways, not really sure if I should try transferring or if it is a wasted effort. :-(

Don't put yourself down. You've still got so much time left in the semester to turn this around. Can you talk to your anatomy instructor and go through your exams with them to see where you're going wrong? That'd be a good place to start

Update: I'm pretty excited because some how I was a really lucky guesser and got over 100% on my anatomy quiz.... so my definition of wrecked is apparently skewed. :heckyeah:
