You guys are making me feel better! A ton of people in my class that I talked to finished it, or at least got to 80%. VetPrep will give you the subscription for free if you have to take NAVLE again, so long as you complete 80% or more of the program. I think that was big motivation for people. Your school probably doesn't want to have to pay a second time That's awesome they buy it for you though!

Lol probably! I've heard a rumour they buy it because our pass rate wasn't up to snuff, but I don't know how accurate that is. What I do know is that it's a new things within the last few years.

I ended up getting another re subscription. I didn’t get to 100% completion but I don’t know if they upped the percentage tbh

The 'guarantee' thing is great and all, but when my friend failed despite having done 80%, she wanted nothing to do with VetPrep again and paid for Zuku for her second try. I really think it's a marketing statement more than anything.

maybe I’m bitter but every time I scrolled past a screenshot of someone’s 100% on social media I groaned audibly. I’m personally so glad I spent a month before the test not doing anything navle related, whether that hurt me in the end or not. It’s different strokes for different folks.

I made some concessions and redid some stuff with a new system (that I actually like better I think...) so her main issue she was discussing yesterday is now resolved. There’s still some similarities but I don’t know how else to get around them.. at some point all horse games have the same basic mechanics and there’s only so many ways to represent real life in code ‍ Still sent an email to a lawyer today just in case

I know one person who's applied in the past. She said it was a huge pain in the butt application, and one of the aspects alot of people overlook is that you have to already have a job in one of the shortage areas before being able to apply.

My friend wanted to do it right out of school but the existing vet at the clinic she was going to take a job at made it clear he was planning on applying and if she applied and got it instead of him she was afraid he’d make her employment hell. I’ve also seen stories in rural vet fb groups about their payments not being paid out on time (or at all)...most have said they eventually get paid but you still have to make your loan payments yourself while waiting on your money and it’s a program with a staff of one or two people nationwide so good luck getting ahold of anyone if there’s a problem. So though I haven’t done it myself my advice if someone is considering taking a job in one of the need areas is to make sure that you can afford to live there even without VMLRP and consider the VMLRP a bonus.

It’d definitely be a bonus for my situation. I just noticed a few days ago the county I’ll probably be working in is a shortage area (or, was for FY 2019, no idea if it even got nominated this year and the deadline to nom was 2 days ago hahaha) so I was thinking about giving it a shot, but yes, I’ve heard just as many not stellar things about the program itself. Lol

I haven't been in the Vet world very long and I've been hearing that academic internships are preferred over private practice ones if one is attempting to pursue a residency.... and that people know that 1) it is accepted that academic interns get to do a lot less hands on than if at a private practice because of the hierarchy at academic institutions (I'm ok with this as the residency will make sure I can do what I need to do) and 2) apparently there are a few private practices that have become more well known and accepted to do an internship at before hopping into a residency.

Can you guys help list some of those private practices, please? Thank you!

Depends on what you want for a residency I think. Angell, Red Bank, and the Animal Medical Center are all places I've heard are well accepted. I've also heard them described as "meat grinder" places who work you half to death

I'm curious... why do people say that comparably to other boarded certifications, boarded ECC vets don't get the salary boost they should get over vets who went straight into ER... is that because the nature of ER allows one to pick up the same skills over some period of time?

Oh yeah, those are very different fields it also depends on which place you're applying to. Some places want that specialty internship, it's trending that way. However, some places (like Davis) want people fresh out of internships so they don't have to retain bad habits. So apply smart, maybe you won't have to do an extra year!

That's a fair point. And who knows, maybe in the next decade, there will be some standardization put through.

yeah I was looking and some of the higher cost hospitals with specialists in my area want internship trained ER docs, which is something I’m excited about. So I am 100% willing to move for a year for it!

Do you have any research experience? You might be surprised. I have zero interest in true bench-top research but clinical research is a great love. If your interested in surgery, it’ll be of great help to you to have some research experience when you go to apply to residency.
