Class of 2021 . . . how ya doin?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Also good LAWD at least my sdn mode isn’t as bright-eye-burning as your signature

Hey class of 2021.... I have a job opportunity if anyone is open to moving to Virginia. PM me for more info! My boss is a great mentor!

No idea what mine looks like in dark mode. I like everything about dark mode except that it's near impossible for me to tell which notifications are new and which I've already read because the colors are so similar, and since I often get a lot at a time I don't want to have to count my way down the list for how many things I have to open to not fall off threads.

Also, having something super bright keeps me from wasting all night on here when I'm trying to go to bed lol

okay but also how do you get it so fancy?! did you put in legit effort?
I straight up put in the effort to do the orange and blue. With all the scheduling changes due to COVID, it was ridiculous lol

Well you tell me more then! I actually just couldn't remember if you had done that one
I'm just laughing because I'm literally in the middle of it.

Anything you wanted to know specifically about it?

Right now, it's mostly telemedicine. We see appointments 3 days a week on zoom. Everyone on the rotation attends all of them but only one student has their cam/mic on per visit. The other 2 days we do topic rounds.

But it looks so pretty!

I have mixed feelings about the fact that I decided to gray mine out as I finished them. It was very pretty in the beginning and now it's just slowly turning into a lot of gray.

Glad you answered cuz I dont really know yet except I have to be fear free level 3 and that our behaviorist DVM is like the nicest person.

I think my eyes have adjusted to it after using it for so long. Used to be terrible trying to pick out bolded text too but I haven't had a problem recently. I think switching back would make my eyes bleed at this point  I wish snapchat had a dark mode, that **** is like staring into the sun

Ah yes, I wish I'd know that I have to be fear free level 3 because making myself work through these modules in 3 weeks while I also signed up for a CE course this month is just... a lot of extra reading that I didn't quite plan for.

I fully expect it will still be primarily virtual by the time you take it. There are some nice things about telemedicine and I think behavior lends itself well to virtual visits. Also while I fully admit to not paying full attention to every appointment, it's nice that I can be "in the room" for as many as I want and really maximize seeing anything particularly interesting that comes in without having to be the student who takes the case (bc no one likes a classmate that tries to take all the most interesting cases). Probably my biggest complaint about telemedicine in a teaching hospital is that you don't get the whole routine of "talk to client, talk to doctor about what you think/would like to do, go back to client". So even though we've been encouraged at this point to take ownership of drug plans... I'm honestly not fully comfortable with that. I have thoughts about what I'd do for my cases, but I'm missing the ability to go run it by the doctor first rather than stumbling through it in front of the client.

I agree behavior lends itself well to telemedecine...actually from the other side lol I had an appointment with our behaviorist for my pup a couple weeks ago and thought that format worked really well. They do all their initial consults over zoom and then will schedule in person training sessions as needed.

Is the DVM boarded in behavior? Are they actually affiliated with the university itself or are they a private practitioner who agrees to take students as part of a rotation? What sorts of cases do they typically take and what sorts of medication protocols are they teaching you about?

Also... can I have some protocols? Lol. Our behavior class was literally a week of 8 hour lectures on Teams and I really don't feel prepared for those types of cases given how many of them I will see in my chosen career.

The five minute consult behavior companion is really really great. I know you have to approach things a little different in a shelter med type of setting but it's a good foundation for a lot of the common things I think. I also love Karen Overall's stuff.

DVM is boarded in behavior and actually affiliated with the university. The LVT on the service has a certificate in applied animal behavior and she's pretty cool too.

Types of cases... I feel like most of them have some form aggression or anxiety. Variations on those themes though. Not really sure the full spectrum of what they see because I just get this 3 week snapshot, but that's been the bulk of it in my experience.

As far as treatment goes... my main takeaway so far (from a GP standpoint since that's where I plan to be) is that pretty much everything can benefit from an SSRI and then probably will also need a drug that addresses fight or flight response. PRN drugs are great for predictable issues like travel anxiety or vet visit anxiety. Classical counterconditioning is pretty much always helpful. And tolerating negative side effects is unnecessary because there's usually a different drug you can try.

Y'all know you can turn down the brightness on your actual phones, right?
It never gets dim enough in a dark room!

Y'all are probably people who like powerpoint presentations with light backgrounds and dark text, smh

Speaking of caves, do you all divide cats into cave cats vs tree cats?

Or is that just my family being weird haha
I haven't before but I like that. The boy is definitely both, but old lady is more of a cave cat.

I have these notes on loan consolidation and repayment plants from a 3 hour VIN webinar that I attended last year. Sent them to @Coopah last night and thought some others here might find them useful. Let me know if anything is confusing or unclear.

“its work and stuff” might be my favorite con I’ve seen on a pros/ cons list
Always a con in my book

Also I noticed as I was posting that I duplicated the second bullet point there, and I'm not sure if that was a mistake, if something else was supposed to be the third point, or if it was just for emphasis lol

Oh, a note that if you're like me and going into a PhD program or other educational thing after you graduate vet school, ideally do not start the program within the same month that you graduate. Not enough turnaround time for your loans to go into grace period and be allowed to waive the in-school deferment. I learned that the hard way and am now stuck with loans in "in school" status until I finish my program unless I want to drop below full time for a semester and lose my stipend (which I don't want to do). Luckily though with the quick turnaround they did not do the usual interest capitalization, so at least won't get hit with that twice, which is usually one of the cons of allowing deferment.

Grad Plus loans are also treated a little bit different from the regular direct unsubsidized loans but that's getting into the weeds a bit and I'd have to go back and read through some emails to remind myself of exactly what that difference was.

So for this rotation, we're expected to call the clients to remind them of their appointment. WE don't really do this routinely for other rotations so the I completely forgot to do this for my first case. Second case rolls around and I'm gonna call them so I look like a competent student this time

First, I forget to write the number down before I leave school. I manage to get the number and I call them...

No answer. Mailbox full.

Awesome.

Love this. I'm doing this too right now to get histories the day before and honest to god I feel like no one answers their phone. But it's fully expected to have this done day before.

I also feel like this means they're not going to answer the phone tomorrow either. Which means I'm gonna have to go out and take history in the cold rather than in the warmth of the building.
