So uhhh... Any tips to use an ophthalmoscope? I've been looking at fundus' in my summer job but am still having difficulties seeing the whole thing at once. I wear glasses so maybe that makes it harder? It's just hard for me to get a full picture of it and I usually only see a portion of the fundus...
I personally own my own indirect lens and use it anytime I actually want to see more than a smidgen of the fundus. Direct lenses magnify everything so much it's basically impossible to see much imo, especially in wriggly undilated animal eyeballs.

frick. Yeah, what Dubz said haha. Hadn't switched pages.

You should be able to rent one from Enterprise or Hertz (maybe others too), it'll just be more expensive
This is why I was asking.
If you happen to be an EMT you get bonus points and don’t need to be 25. Apparently if you’re trusted to drive a box truck you can drive a rental 🤣

Yeah I know you can but more expensive. Darn should rewind time 5ish years and become an EMT. I know one of the radiologists there really well so hoping I can work something out with them or if I can get a group of our students that want to go and we can all split the cost.

Where did you all buy your coveralls from? I have a green pair that was like $70 that we had to wear for LA stuff at UW, but new school only does navy blue *grumble grumble*

I have the proportions of a short Kim Kardashian (aka short and curvy), so all of the coveralls I’ve worn either were tight around the hips and chest or huge to accommodate said hips and chest.

I picked some up from the local farm/tractor supply store. Worked out nicely because I could also pick up some long sleeve ones, which are nice for winters here

I'm still annoyed the smalls don't come in short. I need to find coveralls that I don't drown in sometime in the next month but it seems quite impossible. Tried the medium short instead and they were still huge.
And @johnnaboo

As a fellow shorty...you aren’t going to find anything unless you get some kids’ larger ones, which never fit properly in the hips anyway in my experience. (And never expect to find a surgical gown that will fit, either!) I just folded mine up at the bottom and tucked them into my boots. I always did short sleeves because I had to roll them up before putting them inside a cow anyway

A few years ago I bought a pair of kids large insulated coveralls at TSC- for perfect in leg length but when I sit down they’re snug on my hips. But maybe check there?

Amazon but I'm small and skinny so the men's small fit well

If those green ones did fit decently, I assume they were probs the PellaVet ones, which I think might also come in blue.

depends on how quickly you have access to washer and dryer. Some days we'll have equine lab with bovine lab the next day.

@johnnaboo I would second this! but also - everyone has to do LA stuff for clinics, so you'll need an extra pair eventually. But I also wouldn't rush - there'll be a dump and run sale the first week or so of classes and people post things on the internal listserves all the time for significantly cheaper too

I'm really looking forward to classes starting again.

I'm dreading getting back into the study mindset, but I am looking forward to the routine and being around my classmates every day again. Plus the intramurals and club activities. Classes look intimidating, but we actually start learning the diseases and drugs this year which I am excited for.

I had weekends off (mostly) for the first time in 5 years, and was able to do several weekend getaway trips for both vet and non-vet reasons. It was nice, and a lot of my good friends were also in the city for the summer. I think I'm just kinda ready to be done with my research job and want to be back to mainly focusing on clinical stuff.

19th for us as well. I've been so busy the last month, starting school will probably be a break. It also means less working for me which is great. I mean money is great, but I'm also not a huge fan of my job. However I'm currently up getting ready for orientation that starts tomorrow for the 1st years! Not that I want to start though....

Class starts in 2 days. 2 DAYS. I was sitting at work today reflecting on things I've done in the last week and how everyone's path through vet school is so different. It hit me we are second years. Like my friend was super excited the moment we all passed 1st year that we get to be 2nd years. It didnt hit me til today. I felt so old, wise, but also jaded in comparison to the 1st years I just spent so much time with. Vet school is this wierd warp that's difficult to explain unless you e been through it. This semester is notorious at our school so pry wont be around much. Now to get all the sleeping in before monday!

Yes, that feel. I'm sorry and congratulations. Welcome to the club. It's bittersweet, you realize you've lost something, something you'll never replace. You don't exactly miss it, but you'll mourn it. A little bit of the shine has worn off. Maybe you'll get something new though. A new passion, a new depth of dedication, a new perspective (not altogether unwelcome). I wish you nothing but the best of luck in all future endeavors. May you recover some of your spirit after these trials. This too shall pass.

I feel this too, although maybe a bit differently because of the transfer. Going to all of the orientation stuff with the first years, I can’t help but thinking “you have NO IDEA what you’re in for.” I mean, in a way, I don’t either because I did first year elsewhere, but the same idea still applies.

Update: classes started today and I’m excited/nervous. The learning style is way more active and involved, but I’m also quickly learning what I have and have not learned that my classmates have. My professors so far have been very accommodating with technical issues and orienting me, so I’m hoping they can point me to some resources. Seems like I have a fair bit of reviewing and catching up to do!

P.S. special shoutout to @Miranda Senft for giving me a basic rundown of how classes work over the weekend.

Now I’m off to study how to interpret bloodwork (bc idk how to do that but everyone else in the class does)

First day down was a success!

My first year buddy was sober for the drinking event tonight which was unfortunate, but I was good and stayed mostly sober until she went home. Then got absolutely wrecked because all of my drinking buddies were back in town.

I adore my buddy and am very excited by how good of a match we are. We have a ton in common and I suspect we will be very good friends.

I really like eclinpath.com and Small Animal Medical Differential Diagnosis (Mark S. Thompson) for bloodwork stuff 🙂

Both my classmates and the course director said to use eclinpath and it’s GREAT!

I still use it when there’s a weird thing that pops up in my labwork that I can’t remember!

The book is a great resource for clinics too since it has all the labwork stuff but also tons of differentials for when your attending clinician keeps saying “and...?” after you list the obvious stuff

Somehow 2.5 objective sets behind in clin path and we've only had 2 lectures and lab. Plus I've already completed 3 objective sets...like how? I'm already a week behind in sys path. I slept the majority of the day. Is this sustainable long term?
