Class of 2022...how you doin'?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I will joining the class of 2023 and just out of curiosity.... what do you guys plan on doing this summer? Staying at school vs. going back home, taking time off vs. getting a cool internship? That kind of stuff! You have to get through the first year to even start summer so I have a long way to go lol😉 just want to know what to expect!
I'm doing research at the vet school. My reasons for not going home are that I didn't want to work the same jobs I've worked for the past 4 years, and I like my classmates and the idea of spending the summer adventuring with them was appealing.

Lots of people went home though, only about 1/4 of the class is still in the city (and my class size is fairly small).

I’m on a RAVS trip right now (BTW - if you haven’t heard of RAVS, look it up! It is an INCREDIBLE experience!) and will be working with the Michigan Humane Society for June and July for a new vet student job program they are starting this year! I’m looking forward to building up my exam and surgery skills over the course of the summer (and already have been in the past two days with RAVS!). Also looking forward to a couple of free weeks in August to sit on my butt and watch TV though!!
Lucky you have reception! I looooved my RAVS trip but was completely dead zoned for the whole week. Great experience.

Have a phone interview for a zoo shadow for part of summer while I'm home. Knowing basically anything zoo is so difficult to get into I feel no matter what I say in regards to "what I'm looking for" out of this experience wont be good enough...
Good luck! Try not to be too self conscious about your answers, enthusiasm and interest in the field goes a long way 🙂

I get to go to the zoo!!! :soexcited:
They have the zoo broken down into sections for each month of the year to do preventative care for all the species. @SkiOtter guess what the species for month of July is!?!

(Also, CONGRATS MIXY!!!)

Everyone is just finishing 1st and I just finished my first week of 2nd year today :,)

For those that have freedom, please spend lots of time with family/friends, eat lots of good food, drink delicious drinks, enjoy those cool externships, nap for hours, and have lots and lots of fun before having to start all over again. 🙂

I hate applying for scholarships that require class rank. Like please stop. My class is full of over achievers.
Yours too? Our class is known as the “extra” class because we are so high strung and over-achieving. The faculty had to stop showing us the mean grades on exams because of it. It’s honestly insane.

Scholarships applications are always a pita. I struggled because I was never one to go for participation in clubs and such. I am older and have had plenty of leadership in my previous life, so left it to the go getters. Made my apps pretty sparse. Grades were the only thing I had, so I am thankful for the few that were based solely on that. You just have to be a good salesman for yourself, just like it took to get into school and it will be to get a good job after. I am glad that's over for certain. haha

Didnt get a 95% on the exam? Then you're to the left of the curve like wtf. How do you people have time to do anything but study? Yet these are the people always out at bar night while I'm home struggling to stay awake...

There are several scholarships at my school that specified “preference is given to those with lower class rank”. Idk who decided that but I’m all about it.

If I ever become rich and sponsor a scholarship application will be limited to people in the bottom 50% of the class.

I honestly had to check if you’re a part of my class/school because US TOO!!! They had to stop showing us mean grades on exams (instead we have to click something to find out).. it’s insane... our faculty also get pretty irritated with how many emails they get from my class.

It must be a 2022 thing because same with my class. I also heard from a friend that K-State’s ‘22 class is one of the smartest they’ve had.

Meanwhile a faculty member told a few of us that our class is the dumb class and he actively had to make our tests easier lol
I still laugh at how one of our professors emailed us after a test and said he couldn't meet with everyone that wanted to and then said "I'm sorry so many of you did poorly on the exam"

Finished all my exams, rounded out the quarter with amazing grades, FINALLY figured out how to study efficiently without my brain melting.

Got a summer job lined up working for a local hospital and, since I have NOTHING ELSE to freak out about, now I'm deeply worried I forgot all my tech skills over the past year in order to make space for the 4 cardinal signs of pregnancy in a cow.

Fun times.

A classmate (who I had no clue was on SDN) casually mentioned to me today that she knew who I was as soon as classes started thanks to my username (and corresponding real life tattoo). I guess my attempt to change my username for "privacy" was about as foolish as could be expected.

I think it definitely made you even MORE obvious but I wasn’t about to say anything when you did it 🤣

oh nooo!!! What happened?
It's a jump start on sys path. It makes it so 2 of the busiest weeks of the semester arent hell and I dont have to do it but it's highly recommended. Just another thing to add to the burning pile of things I need to do/get done before school starts again.

I'm sorry 🙁 at least you can start it when you want! Take a month and then start it 🙂

The grade curve/distribution for 2 of our 5 classes this quarter are wack. You have to get a 94 or 95% to get an A. And in one of those classes, there are literally only 100 MC questions to decide your entire grade. So you miss more than 5? You're SOL and not getting an A.
And finals start on my bday, which kinda blows. ahhh just ready to be done

Lol, uhm at my undergrad an A was 98 percent usually. If you werent at the top of the curve you didn't have an A.

Yeah that’s how my classes are too, though that’s because none of are classes are curved. Join the B club!

That’s how last semester was for me, too. No one wanted to do anything with me because they wanted to study 🙁

I don't see how it would, if this is up there with your worst grading experiences. Just from my perspective, 94 percent for an A sounds great
Where they set the cut off has nothing to do with how difficult the class is, or how many people get As. Like, we have a class where above an 82 is an A and the average is generally below 75. That class makes more people fail out then any other combined, I imagine.

I would always rather classes have harder questions, and a larger amount, then not. Otherwise, it heavily penalizes making stupid mistakes instead of actually knowing the material. I have an issue with a 5 credit class having your entire grade decided by 100 questions, but that's me.

So you're saying you think it would be the norm for your undergrad to only miss two questions in a class like this and you don't see anything wrong with that? Sounds extremely poorly designed. Either they're asking super easy questions or give a bunch of extra credit. Otherwise I don't see how that's possible.

The averages in my classes would be 50-60 percent. The average would set the curve at 2.6-2.8, depending on the class. So if you scored a 40 percent, you might still get a C or B-. And they'd ask the most ridiculous multiple choice questions designed to trick you (which of the following is true... a, b, c; a, b, d; b, d; all of the above, none of the above). And you could know it's a and b but unsure of c or d and get it wrong and not get any points.

So it was definitely ridiculous, wrecked my GPA compared to what I used to score. I definitely don't think it is a good structure. Just saying I'd rather what you have than have to go through that again.

I don't understand the concept of curving from a logistics perspective. Set a realistic goal for an A, B, C, etc. My undergrad maintained the 90+ for an A, 80-89.9 for a B, etc. Fair to everyone in my book.

Though I would never want harder questions. Definitely would want more points/questions. But not purposely harder ones.

Our two tests per quarter during 1st and 4th quarter this year were worth 90% of the grade. Absolute trash to me.

I don't understand how you could get a B- with a 40% but to get an A, you would need a 98%. This means anyone in between those two percentages would be in the B range which still doesn't make any sense.
