CSU c/o 2017 Applicants!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Does anyone know if there is somewhere else, besides the vettext store, that sells CSU vet med merchandise? I would like to buy a couple gifts for people, including my mom who I think is as excited as I am, but I am worried that the store will be closed, next week, since the semester is over. Any ideas where to look? my Google search turned up with nothing...😕

I think you can still order from vettext online even though the actual store is closed. That's the only place I know of to get merchandise though.

Woohoo! I got a non-sponsered offer!! 😀😀😀😀 Waiting to hear about WICHE... CSU is definitely my top choice but I can't rationalize the cost if I don't get WICHE. Do you guys think it's worth it?

Also, to those who already live in Fort Collins, any apartment recommendations?

Has anyone received their formal offer in the mail yet? The email that informed me of my acceptance said that a letter had already been placed in the mail but it hasn't arrived yet.

I haven't received mine in the mail yet.... I'm anxiously awaiting so I can hang it on the fridge!

Igs...I'm in the exact same boat as you! I'd love to attend CSU but it's so gosh darn expensive without WICHE. I'd love to hear responses for justifying the cost.

Also, I got my official letter in the mail yesterday so I'm sure you guys will get it soon! P.S. congrats!!

I've spoken to a couple of interns that I work with and one has a debt of 300K+ from Western and doesn't regret a thing... I've also been told to choose a place that I'll enjoy living in for 4 years (and I LOVE Fort Collins!!). Have you heard how feasible it is to get scholarships for CSU? I've looked and there is a TON of them.

I'd also like to hear from people who are non-sponsered about the cost and if they made the right decision.

are you looking for an actual Apartment? I am not cut out for apartment living, but currently I do rent a house in Fort Collins (planning to buy one now that I know I am staying here). My landlord has been pretty good, they are called Youle realty , they manage properties for various homeowners and generally have a wide assortment.

I would like to warn you, the rental market for single family homes is brutal, especially in the summer months. I actually had to defer my masters program because it took me 11 months to find a place for me, my husband, and 3 dogs. Essentially people hold an open house for like 2 hours and have like 30 people show up, and then they rent it out on the spot. I have even seen people almost come to blows trying to get their application into the Realtor's hands, first. I was certainly not prepared for that sort of competition for a rental property. Heck, I told one rental company that I wanted the house, I was driving over with my paper work, and then someone unexpectedly brought their application in, literally seconds, before me and I lost the property. My advice is, if you see a property you want, act as fast as you can. The biggest mistake I made was thinking I could email people and take my time asking questions. I doubt it is this cut throat with apartment complexes, but I figure some people may be interested in privately owned rentals.

Also, as far as apartments go, most of them that are close to campus tend to be kinda trashy. I know some people who live in Courtney Park and like it. I will say that they do enforce breed bans and do not abide by ADA guidelines as far as service dogs, on their banned breed list, go. When my sister lived in Fort Collins she liked Settlers creek.

Not sure if that helps. I can certainly ask around.

Oh I forgot, If you are looking for a great search site for housing, try Zillow.com . I love it!

HI.

I also got offered an OOS position which made my holidays complete. Thank you for the suggestion and input regarding living accommodations. I received my letter 12/22. Still waiting for other schools but CSU is definitely one of my top choice

Oye. Also hoping for a WICHE spot. As much as I know I would love CSU/fort Collins...the price is absolutely terrifying!!

Agreed. Still pretty sure I'm going to take my OOS spot.

...so, do we have a Facebook group yet?

That's awesome Hai! Can I ask what factors helped you decide? I'm really struggling with weighing the cost and would love to hear thoughts from current students and those that decide to accept their OOS offers.

How do people feel about CSU being pass/fail?

CSU is definitely expensive, but so are all of the other programs where I applied (save Wisconsin, but I'm not holding my breath to get in there OOS). I've accepted that vet school is going to mean A LOT of debt for me.

Beyond the cost factors, though, CSU has a lot going for it. Fort Collins is a really cool town. It gets 300 days of sunshine a year. The people are much nicer than where I live now. I'm a knitter and my favorite yarn store is there. There are tons of outdoor activities and I'm telling myself if I go there maybe I'll get to ski once in a great while. There are a variety of restaurants and some really great breweries. In other words, I'd like to live in that part of Colorado. It seems fun.

In another thread, I wondered how I felt about tracking. CSU does track and offers a general track, so I'll be able to choose whether I want to stick with SA or keep my training fairly broad in clinics. Third years spend the morning at the VTH; it's not a 2+2 program, but it does offer more clinical exposure than just one year on rotations. The VTH having a Community Practice is important to me, too. That may well be the kind of practice I end up in, so it's a great resource to have during school.

It sounds like CSU uses a small amount of PBL effectively and as a complementary approach to traditional pedagogical models. It also sounds like the administration is fairly responsive to student feedback (or at least my tour guide thought so!). I like the cubes, and the sneak peak I got of the anatomy software.

I made a pro/con list for CSU and the other school where I've been accepted. The only con I came up with for CSU was the expense. Seeing on paper that I only had one negative for CSU really pushed me in this direction. Of course, I reserve the right to change my mind.

👍 👍 Thanks for sharing! I really appreciate the thoughts!

I had a minor (major?) freakout tonight. CSU is SO expensive. A simple google search for "vet school loans" sent me to blogs about people talking about being in debt from vet school..and well...they just made it sound so awful. OOS NS people - how are you coping with the thought of paying so much money and essentially NEVER being able to save for retirement/kids/etc? If I dont get WICHE or into a cheaper school..I *almost* want to just wait another year and either go get residency somewhere..

Hi Kweezhy

I am OOS from a state with no contract seat or vet school so when i decided to pursue this decision, I knew I will be in for the long haul including financial debt. I also am an independent mature student who is living on my savings after i quit my job to go back to school ft. I have been divorced and technically on my own. Do not have any kids so I only have to worry about myself and my cat. With that synopsis of my situation, I completely understand where you are coming from.

There are loan forgiveness under the revised federal student loan program where you are only required to pay at most 235 of your earnings and and remaining loan after 25 years will be forgiven. I did some crude math base done estimates and it was still daunting. I beleive the government plans to reduce it down to 20% and make it 20 years forgiveness instead of five..still hard to build a nest egg, start a family and life but doable. Many grads had one or two jobs to cope and when you get married if ever, it will be a double income and that could help increase your payments. Its a fact that after vet school graduation, the next obstacle is debt repayment. Its like it never ends but take this form someone who worked for corporate america for a decade, having ajob that will fulfill you is worth the loan than being tied in a mindless draining job that will sap the life out of you and leave you trapped. Its worth it....it will be hard but its doable.

Also , many employers have bonuses and tuition reimbursement program to attract good employees in return for some contract like two to five years of guaranteed employment with them. Scholarships are also a good source but of course, that cannot be relied upon but a good option to attempt to obtain.

This is all i have for now. I hope I helped you a bit though I know its insufficient to pacify most worries.

Who are these employers and why have I not heard of them!? And what constitutes a good employee?

(I have to say though, don't count on scholarships being a "good" source, as it's very rare to pick up more than a couple thousand dollars here and there, and that's if you're lucky)

The federal government is most known for sign up bonuses if you are willing to serve in underserved areas of the country.

It can be competitive and a good employee would be the one who have the necessary credentials and experience that they are desperately looking for. some positions require double degree like DVM/MPH and experience in studying vaccines. I did get info from a vet I met three years ago who works for the USDA. My current scholarship donor whom I met works for department of Health. Private companies have tuition reimbursement if you pursue a degree related to your employment and function as I worked in HR for one.

I have not fully looked into the intricacies it as it would be premature for me but I plan to find such opportunities if they still exist by the time I graduate. They are out there but not fully advertised. Especially for the government jobs, you have to seek them.

Am I the only one thats just seriously amped at the prospect of potentially spending the next 4 years in Fort Collins CO? :biglove:

👍

By the way..is anybody else really touched by how welcoming the current students at CSU have been? I'm loving the student ambassador outreach!

Um.. am I missing something? What sort of outreach? did I miss emails? or maybe its just because I am already a CSU student in the same department? I have not received anything aside from the initial letter in the mail asking if I accept the offer...😕

Aww I'm sorry Maschka! It was just an email and a phone call saying congrats and asking if I had any questions about CSU. You're already a student there in the dept? I'm thinking that has to be why..you are prob already familiar with CSU lol.

Thanks. That probably makes sense. I did find an email in my spam filter. I just keep waiting for the other shoe to drop and someone to tell me that there was a mistake. Anyone else feel this way? Maybe I am just nervous because it has been so hard and now all they want is a silly little letter with the word accept circled???? Since I have withdrawn my other apps I cant seem to shake the concern. I thought I would stop going crazy after I was accepted.

Has anyone stated the scholarship application process? I'm surprised and pleased how easy it is, and how all the CSU scholarships are applied through one central location.

I am still waiting to hear back about WICHE as well, but CSU is currently my first choice of the WICHE schools.

Is there a facebook group for the class of 2017? I've been looking at housing too, and am thinking that I'd like to have another Vet Med student as a roommate, of any year. Thought about posting on craigslist to get the ball rolling, but it seems a little premature?

Although from what was said upthread, it sounds like a cutthroat market!

Any ideas?

I don't think its premature at all. I've already looked at apartments and have it narrowed down to a few I plan to visit when I go up for the pre-vet day in April. One thing I have to say about the roommate thing though. I have a friend who is in his first year right now. He saw an add for a roommate in a a house of 2 or 3 people (all vet students) and he decided to live with them. Turned out to be a terrible idea for various reasons, but he couldn't bring his dog, has a little space in the fridge for his stuff, etc. So I would watch be careful finding a random person to live with, even if they are a vet student.

I've been looking at apartments though and having it be 600 a month, living with a roommate, compared to 1000 would be a lot nicer. I'm just so weary of moving in with a stranger.

Also, I forgot, I found this cool excel sheet with a list of all the apartments in the Fort Collins area with their amenities, cost, etc. Maybe it'll be helpful!

It would probably be wise to set something up when visiting. I hate to move every semester - have been thinking about buying and having roommates, but that darned down payment gets in the way. I've also been thinking about trying to find a roommate not in school who works nights so that I'll get the whole place to myself in the evening.

Who knows? Exciting to contemplate! Thanks for the spreadsheet!

I was so psyched when I got my acceptance. It was one if the greatest moments of my life! I applied for the DVm/phd but didn't get into the phd portion. I hope I can still do research, I have a lot if experience in the lab & want to be a vet researcher & come up with improved ways to treat animals! I Am still waiting to hear back from tufts, u tenn, va-md, and nc state... I applied to some phd programs too & have some interviews coming up, but I really want to go to vet school too!! (if I can find a way to pay for it )

Just decided to scroll through the 2017 thread for kicks...it's amazing how time flies and that I was where you guys are a whole year ago.

In any case, I though I'd add a few things that may be helpful...

Grades: My class (2016) is the first to go back to regular GPAs. No more pass/fail for the most part - there are some classes/activities that are still structured that way but you WILL get a regular GPA.

Housing: The spreadsheet posted is helpful. I will say the housing market here is extremely competitive - most decent places get snatched up or are full by early/mid March. That being said, I've heard lots of things about Craigslist, it is possible to still find places to live after mid March, and from what I've heard it's much less expensive than some areas. I live alone in a decent place for less than my brother pays living with 3 others in Boulder. There are also rental companies to pick from (other than apts), they're usually more accepting of pets: Kevco, Touchstone, My House etc are biggies.

Keep in mind the 25,000+ undergrads use the same places too, and that as a general rule, west campus tends to be louder/drunker(more awesome? def more interesting)/undergraddy/slumlord heaven.

Living with vet students - it can be awesome and it can suck, from what I've heard. It can be like living at school (which happens anyway) but you have a study buddy that can't run away from you. Plus?

Additionally - the vet school will send out a link for students/residents/interns etc ONLY housing in May/June. Lots of posts from 2nd years and up looking for roommates, so that's always an option.

FoCo: AWESOME. With a capital A. And other letters. I could talk about it for hours but I feel like that would be boring, so all I can say is that I love it here and I love my classmates and I love my school and I love lamp. Even being a stressed vet student, you can still find time to visit your local breweries (go to ALL OF THEM, there's like 80 so have fun) and ski or hike or whatever you want if you get your *swear word* together. My fav: indulge in a local brew after a hard day of studying (aka watching TV and cleaning things to aid in procrastination).

Most Surprising: Emails. Holy mother of a triceratops. Love your inbox! Every organization/teacher/vet person in the world uses the PVM listservs, so that's fun. If cardiac phys puts you to sleep like a baby (cough me cough) this is a wonderful way to lose your attention span. Also facebook, as anyone born ever knows. Nuff said.

That's all I've got, hope it was helpful. Feel free to shoot me (or another first year, there's a few of us still floating around on here) a message or whatever it is you do to postulate theories here. Sorry for the long post - it's winter break, I'm enjoying the lazy and have beer.

Bah! March! That's so early for us first years!!
Question - what neighborhood do you recommend? A friend of mine who I think is a fourth year said Old town??
80 breweries?! Yay. <3

Depends on what you want. I would avoid living in old town but that's just me. Apts tend to be smaller, louder, harder to park, crawling with undergrads, poss more expensive etc... There are so many places within a 10 min drive from campus that you can live in a much nicer situation and still be near the fun of old town. If it were up to me, extra bonus to be on the schoolside of the train tracks. But then I pretty much went to a convent for undergrad, and wanted to stay away from the college town setting as much as possible, so ymmv

Vet student roommates can be a blessing or a curse. So tread carefully!

Old town is charming. I lived in old town for the 1st 6 months of my masters program. while it is in walking distance to a lot of cool places, and the houses are charming, it also has its down sides:
1. Small, old houses at a high premium for their location
2. old houses have old issues- harder to heat, no AC, no dishwasher, small rooms, etc
3. Loud, annoying drunk people who throw trash in your yard, harass your dogs, and break your fence in drunken brawls (my experience). I have a service dog who was in training and after living in old town and a few bad experiences with passer-bys, she has become terrified and aggressive towards strange people. I also found Blue (I am guessing soaked in antifreeze) bread thrown in my yard.

So, old town does have its ups and downs. If I had LOTS of money there are some very lovely sections of old town, but on a vet school budget, I am guessing you will end up in a place more similar to my experience. The house was cute, but I would never live there again.

I cant really think of a bad area of Fort Collins. For me, I am not fond of living really close to train tracks or highways, so just look at the map (like on zillow) and you can see proximity of those things. Not sure how close you want to be to campus, but there are lots of newer homes north of Fort Collins at lower prices. Also, I know lots of people who live in wellington or Loveland and love it but it will give you like a 30 min commute. You will get a lot more house for your money, though.

But ya, I cannot stress how competitive the housing market is for renting or buying. March is a pretty good benchmark, if you wait until June/July it gets super insane. Start contacting companies, now to get your name on lists. Especially Kevco seems to have most of their properties pre-leased far in advance. Not all companies will keep a wait list, but some do. Be careful with craigslist. When I was looking, last year, I think 60-70% of the adds on there were scams.
http://northerncoloradorentals.com/ is a good site to use because people have to pay to list properties on it. also, when looking on craigslist make sure to look up the owner of record on the Larimer county assessors website and double check that is who you are working with. You can also type the address into Zillow.com and it will tell you if the home is in default or foreclosure. Since I spent the last 5 years working in real estate (primarily with foreclosure properties) there are two ways you can get into trouble with renting.
1) people will show you a foreclosed home and claim it is theirs, then they ask for your SSN and cash for credit check and you have essentially payed someone to steal your identity.
2) people will rent out their property and collect rent but they dont actually pay on it and the property goes into foreclosure, leaving the tenant with eviction notices and facing eviction by the bank (this is not a pleasant experience)

so be careful of those scenarios from craigslist rentals and check out the property before going ahead with it.

Agreed. Love Old Town, but not to live in. Pricey, tons of drunk people (not just on the weekends, although there's more then).

Personally, I live almost directly south of campus and love it. I'm about 2-3 miles away so close enough to bike, my place is pretty quiet (I study at home a lot) and traffic isn't horrendous. I also lived east of campus a few years ago, and apart from getting caught by the train and being late to class a few times, it was great. I like being close enough to feel like a college kid, but far enough away that the drunk ones can't walk that far.

Do you live in an apartment complex? If so, which one?

When is everyone thinking about moving? I'd say Aug 1st would be my latest... but is it worth it to move earlier to get a good apartment/house?

Do you live in an apartment complex? If so, which one?

I do, but the apartments are privately owned. I rent a one-bedroom through Touchstone Property management, they seem to handle quite a few apartments for owners. I don't know if they're renting others at my complex or not, but I'm in The Gables at Silverplume. There's a current second-year living there as well.

WICHE decisions are up. I didn't get it 🙁 That makes the decision to go to CSU so much harder...

Did you see your WICHE decision on the portal?? Nothing has changed on mine yet. Still only has the Early Nonsponsored (non-WICHE) offer.

Ah, they are posted for all states but NV...which is my state, of course.
