Des Moines University (DMU-COM) Discussion 2015 - 2016

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
for those of you who have not received a complete e-mail after a week from submitting the secondary, did you use an AACOMAS fee waiver? I think this may be what is holding back some of the applications. PCOM notified me that AACOMAS has not released the list of names who received the fee waiver and that I should contact them in 20 or so days. Just wondering if any of you are experiencing the same thing. I am still not complete at Des Moines and they received my secondary on 6/30.

Nah I didn't have the fee waiver

I did have a fee waiver and was marked complete on 7/7

I submitted 7/7 and got an email that I should be complete within 5-7 days. Hope it's soon!!

I e-mailed to ask if they needed anything to complete my app- received an e-mail back today stating they needed my LOR's. I advised them they were attached to my AACOMAS app and offered to send them via interfolio. sigh...

Makes me wonder if AACOMAS still having issues with their LOR situation. They really messed up early on.

I received the secondary application on 6/26. I submitted and got an email stating DMU received my secondary application on 07/02. I still haven't received an email saying I am complete. I sent my letters via interfolio on 06/26. Called DMU said they were having issues. He told me to wait until Friday and if I still didn't receive the complete email, to call him back. He gave me his direct number. We shall see!!

secondary marked received on 6/30 and just complete today, so it can take a while/

I submitted my primary application to DMU on 6/29 and still have not received a secondary. I'm wondering if I should contact the admissions office to make sure they got my application okay or just wait it out...

I contacted them and they said to wait 7-10 business days. I say reach out to them since it's been a little longer

I got the email that they received my application on 6/30. I emailed them yesterday since I haven't been marked complete yet and I just got a response saying that I'm complete and should be getting an email tomorrow morning. So it can take a while.

I got an e mail saying they received my Supplementary App. This is NOT the "complete" e mail, correct? Also, what website is everybody using the check the status of their app?? thanks!

Correct, that is not the "complete" email and I am not sure about the website, but they will email you whenever your status changes.

I was wondering if anyone could speak to the general issue of whether rotations occur close to the preclinical site or whether students must move all over the place in 3rd and 4th year?

From the website:

"During the third year, each doctor of osteopathic medicine student does a series of core hospital rotations. Each rotation is four weeks in length and the location of the core hospital for every student is assigned according to a lottery system.

Core hospital and clinic preceptors are experienced physicians who are Board Certified in their specialty. All preceptors have clinical appointments at DMU and are responsible for guiding each student in learning clinical practice in their specialty."

I'm having a bit of trouble answering the third secondary essay prompt. In my personal statement, I touched on my hospital volunteering, which I do believe to be my most defining service experience. However, I don't want to simply re-hash on what's already been said. Should I touch on something different, to add depth to my application, or should I continue to discuss my hospital volunteering? Any help is appreciated!!

if that different activity would give a better picture of who you are and if that has the chance of impressing the reader, yes you should go ahead and write about it.

my opinion is that you shouldn't re-hash. if you don't have anything to add from your hospital volunteering, u shouldn't write more about. if u read the question, it says its not just about clinical experience. what about any other EC? can you think of any other community service activity that you have done?

I received the secondary application on 6/26. I submitted and got an email stating DMU received my secondary application on 07/02. I used the live "chat" on their website to speak with an admissions person on Friday. She said they were waiting on my other letters to come through, but I reminded her that I had sent letters from interfolio weeks ago. She then looked them up, and added them to my stuff. I got the complete email at 9 this morning.

I will do that later today then. Thank you!

Quick questions!
If my Letters are all together in a committee letter packet, do I still have to list out three of the letters since they have space to do so in the secondary??

Also what do they mean when asking the adviser question on the last page?? Do I just list any academic adviser I worked closely with??

Thanks!

Hey guys I'm a 2nd year at DMU if you have any questions, I'll try and answer as best I can.

3rd year rotations are divided into year-long sites which may be in Des Moines or may be in other areas of the midwest, and non-year long which you will mostly be in Des Moines but may have a couple rotations elsewhere. The 2 main year long sites in DSM are Mercy Medical Center and Unity Point. The majority of students who opt for year long rotation sites go to places in Iowa outside of Des Moines or nearby states.

You submit a list of top choices they try and get everyone as close to the top of their list as they can. They also let you switch with other students if you find someone who also wants to switch sites.
O Grady, do they make any accommodation for students who are parents of school-aged kids (i.e. compelling reason to stay put)?

based on last year's thread, earliest wave of II went out on july 22nd....probably and hopefully we get II this week! fingers crossed!!
Last cycle my application was complete on 8/7 and I got an II in mid-September. Don't worry if it takes a couple weeks.

Yes they make accommodations, but I'm not sure if having kids qualifies. So if you feel so inclined you may apply for an exemption from the traditional lottery system of placement, and they will basically put you at your top pick. They say anyone may apply, but exemptions are usually for those who are taking care of a relative in DSM, for spouses with certain medical conditions, and things of that sort.
Thanks for the info! I don't want to compromise my anonymity too much but in my case it is a bit more than simply having kids, and it sounds like people are being reasonable and humane about it.

Yeah they are definitely reasonable. The guy in charge of rotations basically said anyone who wants to apply for an exemption should and just see what happens because you never know.

How long did it take to get a secondary after verification?

Been complete for a few days now. Would love to interview here.

What kind of a campus setting does DMU have?
It's a decent size campus for the student body. Large student center with complete gym (running track, basketball court included). Cafe in the middle with tons of seating. The lecture halls are really large and comfortable and located in the academic center and attached to the student center. Behind the student center is Ryan Hall, where the anatomy and sim labs are housed. The DMU clinic is also pretty large and located on campus, just west of the gym.

Campus is about a 2 minute drive to be right in the middle of 'downtown' Des Moines, but overall from the places I looked at the cost of living in the area around campus was really affordable. Nice area with tons of shops, restaurants and grocery stores all around. West Des Moines is about a 10 minute drive and has any kind of shopping you could ever want... including a Costco and Trader Joe's

Yeah, mine aren't working either.

Okay, cool. (Well, not cool.. but yeah) I'm sure they're just getting their page running and such and it should work soon. I'll call Admissions in a bit if it still isn't working! If anyone hears anything else about this, please us let know!

I just called admissions and they said they're currently working on it. They'll give me a call back when it is up and running again.

Just got a call back. They said there were issues with the username, so the guy gave me a new username to try and it works now.

Alright.. well I feel bad calling them right now when I'm sure they're aware of the issue. We'll see if I get an email within the hour then I'll try. Thanks for checking!!
