Des Moines University (DMU-COM) Discussion 2015 - 2016

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
DMU seems to provide itself on using a lot of OMM. How do you feel about it?

DMU is definitely one of the top schools when it comes to OMM, and for good reason, the facilities are top notch and the faculty are by far some of the best in the country. The number of faculty helps as well as you receive a multitude of different perspectives and everyone has their unique way of describing and performing OMM.

As for myself, I come from a background in sports medicine, so the principles of OMM aren't all that new to me and I had an interest in it when I was applying to schools. It is healthy to come in with a bit of skepticism, but you also want to have an open enough mind to consider the possibilities and realize that despite all of the amazing medical innovations and research, we still don't know everything about the human body. New cytokines are constantly being discovered as well as new interactions. Fascia was wasn't considered all that relevant until recently and research is now turning towards it.

So to me it isn't entirely far fetched to think that OMM has a place in medicine and even though we haven't figured out how to perform the research that demonstrates its efficacy, we can't just rule it out as bs. I think it is much easier to dismiss it because it's not inherent to the typical scientific mind, than it is to entertain the possibility that we just haven't figured out how it works/what specifically works yet.

My advice is to come in with an open mind and be curious while also maintaining your ability to be skeptical and question what is being taught/presented. Avoid jumping to the "nope!" conclusions.

Hope this helps

Thank you guys for your thorough replies. I was skeptical about the school the city at first but now I am really excited for my interview and I hope I get in!

Secondary finally submitted! Hopefully this Iowa boy gets some love.

I have heard from many that this might literally be the best DO school in the country due to high research funding as far as osteopathic schools go? Plus this is a very established school as well?

that's what I've heard too. very frustrated that we haven't heard anything this week even though we've early complete dates. it looks like its not entirely rolling admission for II.

Well, this is awkward. I got an II yesterday, BUT, if I got one, you will most likely get one too.

I think we have similar stats AND you are Instate as well.

Edit: Also I totally agree with you. I'm not sure about this rolling admission thing.. there are so many other school threads I'm browsing that just make no sense with the "rolling admission" thing.

What do you guys mean when you say "its not entirely rolling admission?"

There are many schools that will respond to and give out interviews to applicants that submit their applications later than many applicants who submitted much earlier with no luck.

One of the questions on the secondaries asks: Please describe your exposure to osteopathic medicine, including (but not limited to) experiences with physicians in primary care or rural practice within the US.

I don't have any exposure to osteopathic medicine in the U.S. but I do have exposure to it from other countries...does that count? If I don't have any exposure to osteopathic medicine in the U.S. should I not waste the time and money to finish the secondary? I do know what osteopathic medicine is and I'm very passionate about it. But I've only shadowed and worked with M.D.s

Thanks!

congrats! hoping to hear back next week.

How long after verification did you guys get secondarys?

Hey @O Grady and all how are you guys finding 2nd year? Is it more difficult/require more time for studying?

I feel like they have been easing us into these past couple weeks with some lighter classes, but it picks up quite a bit very soon (at the end of August we have 5 exams in the space of 2 weeks). It seemed like first year we got a barrage of difficult classes right away like biochem and anatomy.

It's difficult to tell so far if 2nd year is harder, but most current 3rd years I talked to would say that it is harder, but more interesting/applicable than 1st year.

I wonder if they're going based off of stats or date marked complete? I've been complete since 7/15 and still nothing yet

I've been complete since 7/15 and still haven't heard anything from DMU either 🙁.

I have been complete since 7/20 and nothing here either.

DMU gave IIs last week on Tuesday and Wednesday. If the pattern on sdn continues hopefully we will all hear something tomorrow!

I was complete 7/13, nothing here either.. They're probably going in order. I'm with wsu11, maybe tomorrow!

does anyone know how dmu views reapplicants (who got rejected post interview)? do you guys know anyone who got accepted as a reapplicant? What are the chances of getting II again? any thoughts on this is much appreciated!

you can call them, but i bet all medical schools just see how you improved from last year rather than care that the applicant was rejected in a previous cycle. a lot can change in a year.

Complete email. Really hoping for an II here, those of you who already have one will absolutely love it. Des Moines is a great city!

For those with interviews, any suggestions on where to stay!?

I got an ii as a reapplicant. But I never submitted the secondary in the past cycle.
