Hey ryserr- Man it was good getting to know you and if there is an intramural FB or rugby team at UCI, we should do a long distance match! Start the first D.O. vs M.D. game! Haha! J/K. Good luck with everything over there. And did you know that UCI used to be an Osteopathic medical school for over 40 years? http://www.healthaffairs.uci.edu/som/historicalTimeline.asp

I bet they teach manipulative medicine there! Best of both worlds. Keep going.
BK

haha. There actually is a rugby team at UCI. Its my current team's biggest rival. Kinda funny. But anyways, I'm down to start a intramural medical school rugby league to destroy you in!!! Mwa ha ha.

And yea, I did know it was first an osteopathic school! Ironic, heh? Maybe thats why i liked it so much? I knew I was a DO at heart 😀

Good luck at DMU, if thats where you end up. I know you'll have a blast!

Hey, one of my friends was accepted into the rural program this year, this year being hte first. You have to write an essay, etc. and they will explain it all during the financial aid orientation in the morning; if they do not, be sure to ask!!! I think that they did two or three acceptances for the full tuition this year, but I am not 100%. Good luck to you and make sure you ASK!!!!

Thanks...I actually got a $189 RT flight from Charlotte, NC to Kansas City, MO. I'll have a 3-hr drive (approx). Yes, I did check the weather.com, thanks for that suggestion above....let's just hope it's accurate 😱 When I checked Omaha all the flights were about the same as Des Moines. Strange huh? Maybe it's cuz I'm coming from the southeast? Unfortunately I still have to fly through O'Hare. I HATE O'Hare. *sigh*

So do you come in for an interview this week? It is supposed to warm up so it may be slushy, but not an icy mess!!! Good luck!!

Im putting down my deposit tomorrow! Good luck all, DMU is amazing!

Congratulations!! DMU is a wonderful school! I am quite excited for everyone that gets in and has already been accepted; aside from the fact that I want there to be plenty of space for me when I interview!! I did not have any idea how long AACOMAS took to process an app.!!! Hope to see you all next year!!!!

Yup, got in about 5pm. Actually a very pleasant day for a drive, sunny and clear, but cold! I've been up since 4am EST so I will probably crash soon (I think I may have slept 1.5 hr before that anyway). I'm pleasantly surprised by how pretty Iowa has been so far....
And yes, very excited. Thanks!

Hey all

So who else is interviewing tomorrow...just drove In from OH (loong damn drive)

Anyone have tips?

resist TCOM, come to DMU!!

:laugh: I dont even know if I am in at TCOM and wont know until the new year....but I am paying my deposit for DMU in a couple days....so so far it is DMU for me, but if I do get an acceptance from TCOM I will have some hard decisions to make!

That clip was too much- I couldn't resist, had to send it out to family and friends to let them know there is a life in medicine as well!

Good luck to everyone interviewing tomorrow- it is very relaxed, and the school totally sells itself! :luck:

hi all!

quick question...about how long did it take to get the interview invite once your file is complete? just curious..thank you 🙂

over a month for me. others may vary.

So do we apply for these magical bouts of scholarship payouts? If so, I am out of luck without a buck! That is unless we have some time to turn our forms in on the deadline.

This is sad. I am replying to my own quote. Seriously, I have not taken the liberty of looking this up or reading any of the other posts. Is it all automatic for scholarship consideration, or do we put a word in for ourselves, apply, etc.? Anyone?

I called and asked this question a while ago. I was told that it was automatic consideration IF you meet the criteria of 3.6/30 MCAT. If you don't make that cut off, you aren't considered. You don't apply or anything like that.

Had a GREAT interview today. Except for breaking my foot (yup, I'm starting to think it is really broken). Beautiful, modern facility, amazing technology, comfortable feeling, faculty seems genuinely interested in us as people and potential students. The interview day was primarily about getting to know us and trying to gauge "fit".
👍

Just a bunch of 2nd-year students. At first I thought it was sprained but now it's bruised and point-tender and there's a definite click when I rotate. 😱
Moral of the story: beautiful heels + cuffed pant legs = recipe for disaster. Happened to catch my R heel on the L pant cuff when coming down the last step of the circular staircase to go to lunch, tore the pant leg, did something awful to the foot, hurt like hell, couldn't weight-bear for several minutes...then it subsided and I could (barely) walk on it. Some nice students got me some ice and a chair to prop it up. I could (and can still) walk on it but now it's bruised, tender over the 2nd metatarsal and clicks when I flex/rotate.
Airport should be fun....
I was just proud of myself for not falling and not swearing. 🙄

wait, what? details. did you think to have any of the docs there look at it 🙄

yikes! well, at least you have a good story about your interview day! glad it went well, hopefully the holiday wont draw their decision out too long!!

I guess I could have skipped the good story...prolly cuz my foot hurts and I'm away from home 🙁 but it was a good day nonetheless. Yup, it will be good to hear either way so I can make my plans. Thanks for your encouragement!

Hey all

@primmadonna. ... Hope ur foot feels better I remeber when u did that prior to lunch.
I loved the place too, great school and awesome students. No stress going into the interview but then they started grilling me on decisions i would make if a pt didn't listen, what if I failed a test..gave answer...what if u still fail...gave answer...and if u still fail. I just didn't get any feeling from my interviewers that they wanted to be there.

I think I gave good answes but hard to judge. Oh well loved the place anyhow.

Eh, it hurts, but only if I walk on it 😉 Airport should be interesting.

As far as your interview goes, I think you had the tough one from what I heard. A couple of other students who had that team had a tough time. I guess I got lucky. A number of the 2nd-years were telling me and another girl who came out of the interview totally stressed out that it's just that particular interviewer's personality and not her fault at all. I have a feeling you got the same interviewer.

I'm not sure if we can draw ANY conclusions from the whole process other than it's a cool school with great facilities and a slick program. I won't turn down an acceptance by any means, but I guess I'll see what happens.

good luck!

Hey does anyone know if DMU will extend the deadline to pay the fee (12/15). Just waiting to hear from a few more schools... I suppose I will call.

Ya. The second years with us told me that the team I had was like that. And there is ZERO ability to judge these interviews. Even so I think I gave mostly good answers and even got one of them laughing once(only once) so we'll know soon.

Good luck

You too. It's nice to have choices though, isn't it?

I had interviews in Sept. and they grilled me as well. Except it was the repeated "what if you don't get into school... still... still yet... keep going... one more... even when you are old and gray?..." Yeah, pretty crazy. Then some questions on universal health coverage, foreign healthcare, etc. I thought I did pretty well, but got the impression they didn't want me either. But hey, I got in. And to prima, that shoe thing is hilarious. :laugh: I hope you had a good interview day despite any broken bones, and I also hope you have a good sense of humor about it, otherwise I am anticipating angry responses on this thread! :luck: with the rest of the interview season...

putting down my deposit tonight after work!!

Thanks...man, it hurts. It's now bruised and swollen and not very pretty. I'm sure walking in airports all day didn't help....
I'm hoping for a positive response soon. Thanks for your encouragement!

Well that makes it seem a little less personal, I was just caught off guard by some of the questions and the tone. Glad to see that it worked out for you and perhaps see you in Des Moines next year

Where do 3 rd and 4th year students go for rotations? Can they go to Minnesota?

Good news...my foot is actually NOT broken, or at least not obviously so. A very, very bad sprain. But at least it should heal quicker.

I interviewed at DMU on 12/5 and am so anxious to hear. I loved the school. I felt good about my interview. They didn't grill me at all. I'm starting to wonder if that was a bad thing! They just seemed interested to get to know me and just asked about my background, goals, and interests. Is this bad? I know some people said they really got grilled.

It just depends on who interviews you. no worries 🙂

I posted this awhile back in the thread. One of the other students at DMU confirmed it, and I also PM'ed them to send a list of actual sites if they could. 👍

So I spoke with the Associate dean of clinical affairs at DMU today. Basically, out of the students in their third year this year,
40 = Ohio rotations
8 = Wyoming
2 = Minnesota
15 = Michigan
6 = St. Louis, MO

Then 50% stay in Iowa. I didn't get a list of the clinical sites, but I am going to talk to a friend who goes there and is in 2nd year and ask if he has a list. Anyways, nothing new I guess. 4th year BTW can be done anywhere. So again, not much new. I will come out with a list shortly... hopefully.

Exactly 14 days ago actually! They are very prompt with their admissions decisions. I had cool interviewers and they asked great questions that were pretty standard "get to know you" types. I got grilled pretty good by the student interviewer towards the end of it though. He pressed me hard on the MD/DO issue and my MCAT score (verbal in particular). I fired right back at him (respectfully of course) and held my ground. I think they were trying to see how I acted under pressure, the key is to keep your composure and not say anything that can be taken the wrong way. It is nothing compared to what I've heard about some of the MD interviews, though. Those can be brutal, this was just a little bit stressful and it wasn't because they were trying to break me down or anything. Im sure you'll be fine! Just be confident in who you are and where you are coming from!

my verbal is lower than yours :laugh: so I better prepare for a grilling session haha. I got the fastrack admissions invite just a week after my primary was released and will be interviewed on jan 08, 09.

I was sketching out all the electives I want to do on my plane ride home. I have the advantage of having done PA school a decade ago and thinking of all the things I should have taken, wish I had taken, etc. (nephrology, neurology, ICU/CCU, critical care peds). I realized that I have a LOT of contacts in Oregon and some of those would be great learning experiences. I set up a few of my PA rotations; wondering about the feasibility of setting up my own DO 4th year electives? Anybody know? (this is of course 4 years down the road....)
thanks
Lisa

4th year you have the ability to set up your rotations anywhere you'd like, in any field that you'd like. DMU gives their students A LOT of elective time. I think its osmething like 20+ weeks of electives during 4th year. You could for sure set up rotaitons in Oregeon via the connections that you have. Also remember that these electives are used for "audition" rotations at possible residencies you might like to go to.

It all depends on who you get...they may not even bring it up! Good luck, and cool beans with the fast track, thats handy.

Does anyone know the likelihood of acceptance after interview? For instance, does the school take around 60% of interviewees, 50%, etc.?

as the cycle goes on that % will steadily decrease
but its still pretty high at this point, probably around 65% atleast

All of 4th year minus 8 weeks are electives.

Yes, I did miss it. Thanks!
I am not sure if I understand "4th year can be done anywhere". If I am interested in moving back to Minnesota for 3rd. and 4 th years, will I have to some how establish a relation with a hospital in MN? Or DMU will help me to go where I want to go? It sounds like I won't be able to do all my rotations in MN, considering there are only 2 that are available.
Sorry, I am still trying to figure out this whole thing...
