I've posted this in Allo but it seems to be the wrong forum.

I've read the few threads from a couple years ago but I'd like some more recent advice. I really loved both schools but for different reasons. I feel that what one school lacks, the other school has. I've also been accepted to PIL, which makes my decision that much harder.

I would have to say Drexel, even though I turned down an interview and took an interview at Temple. I was just too turned off by the location of Temple and the safety issues in the area. It's important to me to live very near my school, and I was told at Temple that it just wasn't a [safe] option.

Interviewed at both. I would vote for Temple. Drexel is out in the middle of nowhere and felt like a elementary school building. Safety is a negative for Temple though.

Also, their new med school is nice, nice, nice.

They do have very big differences, so at least they are easily differentiable...

Saying that Drexel is in the middle of nowhere is a rather ridiculous argument. Drexel's campus is less than 10 minutes away from Temple's, and only an additional three minutes from downtown. You can live near campus at Drexel, while nearly no one lives near Temple. You can argue that Drexel's main teaching hospital is a shuttle ride away, but it's comparable to having to commute to Temple every day. Plus the shuttle is free.

If Philadelphia is the middle of nowhere to you then you must think I live(Loudoun County, VA) in a wildlife reserve or something.

Just checked wikipedia.
It has now been verified, Loudoun County, VA is indeed a wildlife reserve 😀

I'm a current MS IV at Drexel. Feel free to PM me with any specific questions and I'll answer them honestly. I'd also be willing to talk with you on the phone if you PM me your number.

I'm actually trying to make the same decision right now... I was sure I wanted to go to Drexel, but I was just accepted to Temple as well 🙂 I really really love Drexel, but I was recently told by 2 doctors that Temple is a more prestigious school and is better for getting into a good residency. I'm not so sure I would agree on this based on a comparison of their match lists though (any input on this?)
From my interview days, I was much more impressed by Drexel's facilities, but I'm also aware that Temple's new med school building is opening this fall. I actually went to Temple for undergrad and loved the school, but absolutely hated going to North Philly everyday, so that's a pretty big turn off for me (I live in the suburbs and get depressed if I don't have trees and animals around, lol!). On the other hand, that kind of environment gives u more interesting clinical cases & probably better experience, so it goes both ways... I'm just going to go to Temple's Second Look and Drexel's Accepted Students Day & take it from there 🙂

This is far from true. Nobody can honestly argue that there is any meaningful difference between Temple and Drexel that will affect your residency chances. Work hard, get good board scores and neither school will be able to hold you back. Drexel has more affiliated hospitals too, if that makes any difference to you.

If you like the trees, Drexel's campus is definitely a better fit. The area is safe and lots of folks live close by and walk to class. I haven't seen too many wild animals around, but there are plenty of squirrels. 😀 You've also got Kelly Drive where you can bike or run by the water, or a large extent of Fairmount Park for other outdoor activities. Basically, Drexel gives you the best of both worlds. You've got a nice, green campus so you can keep upbeat, and the main hospital downtown so you can get all the action and interesting clinical cases you want. Plus, Drexel's children's hospital (St. Chris) is just a mile or so away from Temple in the heart of North Philly too, for what that's worth.

I'm just going to go to Temple's Second Look and Drexel's Accepted Students Day & take it from there 🙂

Thanks for the input, saqrfaraj 🙂 I think I'll go w/my gut feeling and choose Drexel since I can't really think of anything that I don't like about the school... That weird comment about Temple being more prestigious just threw me off a bit I guess.

By all means, do what you need to do to make the best decision. Don't let me talk you out of going to Temple's second look. If you have any more questions about Drexel that will help you make your choice, feel free to ask.

I'm still going to visit both schools one more time just to finalize my decision, but at this point I'm all for Drexel 😀

wow that's a hard decision.... I like both schools...they are NICE

im accepted at drexel and have a scheduled interview at temple coming up...but i live in cali. im just trying to decide if i should fly out for the interview. (im kinda sick of flying around the country!)

plus, i really liked drexel's atmosphere and non-traditional curriculum. somebody convince me to fly out to interview, or convince me otherwise!

Easy decision. Don't go. Would you rather spend four years as an owl...

...or a DRAGON?

saaaaame dilemma heeeeere. leaning towards temple but going to both second looks.

Psssh...you know you want to go to Drexel. 😀

Seriously though, if a Temple student doesn't come around here quick, I'm going to start spouting ridiculous proclamations about Drexel and there won't be anyone to call my bluff.

after seeing both schools again, i think i am going to temple.
the brand new med school building, schneck, and having the hospital right across the street are definitely pluses. on the other hand, drexel seemed to hold their students' hands a bit more -- which not everybody needs.

just my 2 cents... PLEASE post if you disagree/want to add to it

I'm not sure what you mean about the hand holding, but I think we can all agree that Temple is a great choice (don't tell anyone I said that). 😀

Good luck!

Schneck is AWE-SOME! Yeah....as an M1 at Temple, I learned all these neat physical exam maneuvers while my Drexel counterparts don't even touch that until their second year. By then we'll be in the hospital for our community/clinical sessions putting these skills to use. I'm sure Drexel prepares everyone for their transition into the hospital setting but because Temple starts off so early, you're able to slowly ease into your comfort zone... by 3rd year, these things are a breeze.

I chose Temple. But if you are into neurology/spine (it's early I know), definitely go to Drexel. They do some of the best research in that field. But it is nice having the hospital on the same campus as the school like Temple. Plus, I worked at a few med schools in Philly and have some first-hand knowledge about the school and how it is throwing money at some great PIs and bringing them to fill up their new building (my boss was one of them) so Temple is definitely on the rise and they are willing to invest in their school

is temple really that unsafe.....do i have to sport kevlar each day to class....lol. I feel like i should just take it off my list of schools this cycle all i hear are horrid things.

Maybe I shold hire a personal bodyguard.

We had clinical sessions during our first 2 yrs as well. We also didn't have to wonder if today was the day we were going to get capped on the way to school.

its really not like people live 5 min from there and walk to school at 3 am. its not in a great place but thats a good portion of their business. most of the students live in center city.

With these two schools it's pick your poison. Either way, you're going to have to spend time in Filthadelphia, you're going to get raped to the tune of $45,000 per year tuition and have to overpay on some dump of an apartment. The city will also attempt to scam and steal money from you any and every way they possibly can.

Good luck!

Let's get real here. Drexel is located 5 minutes away from the hood that is Germantown. So true, the immediate area is relatively safer but it's not like it's the best place either. The only school in this city that I can say is in a good area is PCOM. No one is worried about being capped on the way to school. Seeing as how I actually go to this school, I think I know what I'm talking about. Stop exaggerating....all of Philadelphia is a dump. Maybe except for Rittenhouse Square. 😀

ok I googled "temple med student gets"

first thing I found

http://media.www.dailypennsylvanian...With.Killing.Temple.Med.Student-2149491.shtml

Wharton undergrad charged with killing Temple med student

Hopefully people read the article and saw that this happened in DELAWARE.

sorry havent checked this thread in a while...
but yeah what i meant was that drexel spoon-feeds its students more, like overly takes care of them -- i think i got this feeling from one of the presenters who actually was highlighting this as an advantage. in fact i think her exact words were "drexel is for students who will become great physicians but just need a little extra help." or something along those lines. maybe i just understood her the wrong way. and maybe temple does the same thing but nobody mentioned it.
but yeah, 110% sure that i'd become an owl after receiving a scholarship offer... icing on the cake. mmm cake. 😀😀😀

Maybe so, but I haven't experienced it yet. Maybe second year.

Good luck at Temple!

I have lived in philly, NYC, and Baltimore, and philly is not that bad in terms of price. I will agree that philly is a scummy town in certain areas but the history of the city is cool and they have great restaurants and bars. But philly sports fans are the worst, so if you are not a philly fan and like to wear your teams' gear, i'd be more afraid of drunk college kids or trashy philadelphians starting fights with you than someone mugging you in north philly. I speak from experience

I obviously didn't mean philly, since I was comparing it to Temple. My point was, Drexel is out in a suburban neighborhood, not on a medical campus with the hospital. Which they don't bother to show you when you interview... something that seems relevant when choosing a medical school. I didn't mean it was out in the boonies.
